Who will be the new OC?

I can see Lombardi as the QB coach with BOB (hopefully) as OC. On defense, I don't think Mayo is ready yet as DC. Maybe bring in Boyer who built a strong D in Miami.

Why wouldn't Mayo be ready yet?

He's had 3 years as the linebackers coach.

That's as many as Vrabel had (although Vrabel was in college for 2 more).

Matt Patricia had 4 years as a position coach before becoming DC but he also didn't have 8 years as the defensive captain / signal caller like Mayo did.

I think mayo is at similar point in his career as Patricia and Vrabel were.

I’m not sure why Lombardi would pass up an OC position with the Raiders to be a QB coach with Pats under 0’Brien. He’d be the play caller if he stayed (that’s if the Raiders are interested; there’s lots of speculation here). Gase (who’s still being paid his HC salary by the Jets could be brought in as an offensive consultant to help Lombardi in this scenario.

I really like the idea of bringing Boyer in as DC. But, Bill had that chance 3 years ago and passed on Boyer for Stephen and Jerod.

In Michael Holley's book (which came out long before Mayo became a coach) I learned that no New England player (not Bruschi, Vrabel, McGinest, not even Brady) lived and breathed football like Mayo. Like Brady, he was earliest in the door, he was always last out the door, but Mayo was also known as the hardest worker offseason as he used to come in several times a week and study film in addition to his workouts. No Patriot player worked more on studying the game than he did.

I have no doubt that Mayo worked hard. The entire team did.
How hard could it be to coach Hightower and Bentley? Hightower would be an excellent replacement for him if he gets an outside gig or moves up.
I am not blaming Mayo for the defense. I'm not blaming Steve. It's probably more on BB, but WE don't know, despite the clamor for SB and with some BB, to hit the road.
I wouldn't stamp my feet if Mayo got promoted. I'd feel much better if he had spent time with a title other than ILB Coach.

Did you follow the Patriots when MAYO was playing? The Patriots didn't have a separate coach for ILB and OLB when Mayo was a player. The ILBs and OLBs went through the same drills. And the LBs also went through some of the same drills as the D-Line when it came to disengaging from blocks. Mayo DID take special teams snaps as a player. So this idea you're pushing of a "singularity of his playing/coaching" is disingenuous at best and malicious at worst.

The fact that you are downplaying Mayo's work ethic as reported by Holley, tells me that you really haven't followed the Patriots all that well. What made Mayo so great is that, like Vrabel, Mayo KNEW what everyone's assignments were when a play was called. Like Vrabel, Mayo was considered a COACH on the field. I don't think you understand the gravity of those two concepts.

You might want to pick up Holley's books on the Patriots and read them. Or read them again if you have them already. You are doing Mayo a tragic disservice with the viewpoint that you are pushing..
