Who will be the new OC?

"Continuity," Koppen said. "Nothing in that offense changed. Everything that Mac Jones learned last year will continue and Billy O is a teacher," Koppen said. "He's got a great grasp on the offensive system, the offensive scheme, the offensive concept. He knows what to expect coming into this building with Bill Belichick. ...

"He's a worker, he's a grinder, there's no lapse. There's nothing new to learn than Mac just continuing to feel comfortable and progress in that offense that he learned last year.

Despite Gase's rough tenure as Jets head coach, Koppen believes he'd bring some of the same positive qualities as O'Brien.

"That's the benefit with Gase as well. Gase is gonna run the same system too," he said. "Gase has a great grasp on that offense. He's a smart guy. I know the crazy eyes thing went a little bit haywire down there in New York and Miami, but that happened to McDaniels too in Denver. When you're a head coach when you're young, maybe you learn a few things of what not to do or you don't be yourself in that situation.

"But I've had a great relationship with Billy O over the years and when I played I've had a great relationship with Adam Gase when I played with him."

Not a lateral move, but Juan Castillo spent 15 years as some form of offensive assistant with Andy Reid’s Eagles before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2012. It was very controversial at the time. It also only lasted for 6 weeks before Reid canned him.
You're ignoring the fact that Castillo spent 4 years at Texas A&M- Kingsville and another 4 years as a HS DC before moving to the offensive side of the ball for Texas A&M- Kingsville as their O-Line Coach for 5 years.

So, Castillo has experience (albeit HS/D2 College) on the defensive side of the ball.

That’s been true for the last two OCs, Bill O’Brien and McDaniels. McDaniels was the QB coach under Weis, and then added play calling to his duties when Weis left. O’Brien was WR, and when McDaniels left he slid over to QB and picked up the play calling duties. So if it follows the first McDaniels departure, yes Caley would slide to QB coach.

Looking at Hardegree, I didn't realize he'd actually had so much time Coaching QBs outside the Pats. I thought he was just an Offensive Asst with the Jets and Miami. That's my bad. So, he COULD, theoretically spend another year as the "QB coach" and then transition to being the OC..

Pep Hamilton.
Don’t know a lot about this guy other than he is a coaching nomad. What do you like about him and his qualifications?

I love the idea of Pep Hamilton.

he coached Herbert and Davis Mills to excellent rookie seasons.
He’s young and he kills the Belichick is racist diatribe.

Reportedly, Hardegree has already taken the QB coach job with the Raiders.

I can’t imagine we look at the results in Houston this year and say give me that guy.
He’s 47.

Please don’t tell me you want to hire someone based on the color of their skin to ward off being called racist. Doing that IS racist.

The Patriots currently have a coaching staff that is ~35% minorities, which is right on par with the rest of the league.

No I like Pep he also coached Luck.

Every Qb under him has been successful.
He seems like a up and coming coach.
He’s younger than a Bill Obrein or Charlie Weis.
Houston likes him so much they want him as OC no matter who the head coach is.

I can buy those reasons more than you like the color of his skin.
And by the way Weis’ age is irrelevant, he isn’t a candidate at all
47 is on the old side for an OC, not old but not a young up and comer.

My concerns are his career path and nomadic history may be telling.
He was done being lucks coordinator in 2015 (was he fired?)
Then Cleveland for a year, college for 2, out of football, minor leagues, then qb coach for 1 year in LA and a lateral nice to Houston.
Not a stellar resume.

With McD signing Patrick Graham as DC, Daboll may be interested in Mayo as his DC.

Watching the Senior Bowl and saw on the ticker that the Raiders were interviewing the Browns TE coach Drew Petzig for their HC position today, so they’ve not hired Mick Lombardi yet.

Mike Giradi’s report which spoke of the Pats interest in Adam Gase mentioned the “Pats still had hope of promoting from within” at the end of the report. The longer it goes without Lombardi being hired by the Raiders, you would have to think the odds improve of the Pats retaining him, and perhaps making him their QB coach/play caller.

Adam Gase also is being paid head coach money by the Jets for 2022. Bill is loathe to pay guys in that situation OC type money, so it’s likely Gase would get a consultant position with the Pats like Patricia last season. Btw, Flores is in the same situation.

Very interesting.
Even Micks dad doesn’t think he will get the promotion.
However I’m not against it.
Imagine if he is successful and a head coach the one day with the name Lombardi.

I thought Hoyer said he wasn't interested in coaching, hours too long or something.
yes.

Also, there is the money. He can make as much as a backup in 3 weeks as he can all season as a coach.

I think that a team can havehim as a backup at a discount (about $800K), while he gets about $1.2M if he is someone's starting roster. He certainly shouldn't have any interest in coaching until a couple of weeks after the final cuts, if then.

I can see Lombardi as the QB coach with BOB (hopefully) as OC. On defense, I don't think Mayo is ready yet as DC. Maybe bring in Boyer who built a strong D in Miami.

I love this and I love what Boyer did in Miami.
