Who was the best team the Patriots ever defeated in the regular or post-season?

Rated one of the best teams of all time, and TB just got better after that.
The big issue the 04 Colts have sort of the same issue as Manning's 13 Broncos.

Powerhouse historic level offenses and overall great teams. But people remember them getting flattened in their elimination game in the playoffs in such humiliating fashion that it overwrites how dominant they actually were.

That.. and I also give the same credit to the 2018 team, so reminiscent of the 01 team, solid defense, and we were counted out.. that 2018 rams team was phenomenal during the regular season and we held them to 3 points.. in the superbowl encapsulated our last superbowl of the BB/Brady era. I think that game is special.

Cooper kupp’s injury was huge and the rams weren’t the same after , i Think we caught a big break drawing them instead of NO. Goff has still never stepped up in big games either.

I loved our 2018 team though. It wasn’t the most memorable game but I still enjoy watching that divisional game vs san Diego where the offense scored on like its first 5 possessions. They clicked at the perfect time!

2014 Seasquawks and it's not close

It's the Rams and it's not even that close
You guys crack me up, and I say that with affection.

The OP question is in Patriots’ history the best team they beat in the regular or postseason, which basically means you have to go through the entire history of the franchise and analyze every team they ever beat. And you guys come out of the box instantly with your opinions and “it’s not close.“

I love message boards

I think this should be a top 10 or 20.

One single best team... could be too hard.

We tied the '61 Oilers at Nickerson Field.

We beat the '64 Bills at War Memorial.

We tied the '66 Chiefs at Municipal Stadium.

We beat the '71 Dolphins at Schaefer.

We beat the '72 Redskins at Schaefer.

We beat the '74 Vikings at the Met.

We beat the '82 Dolphins here in the snow plow game.

In '88 Flutie led us over the Bengals and Bears.

Drew personally won so many games we shouldn't have won, but those opponents weren't quite elite.

Forced to choose maybe I'd say

1. '76 over Raiders
2. '01 over Rams
3. '18 over Chiefs
4. '04 over Steelers
If it's too hard to pick the best team, imagine how difficult it would be selecting a top 20.

Yes, also if you remember the Rams shouldn't have even been there. The saints got hosed on that no call in the NFCCG, I think we would have beat the saints as well. Maybe not hold them to 3 points.. but we could have beaten them.

That 2018 team and superbowl as well as the 01 as they both hold significant meanings in patiots history. The very first and very last championships of the TB12 era ironically against the same team.

@signbabybrady @PATSYLICIOUS

For anyone wondering about peppers status as a leader..

Does he get the C again?

I think so otherwise you're potentially setting up a situation that doesn't need to happen. Probably fine either way but no need to create awkwardness if you don't have to.
I think so. He, himself even saying last season he wanted to earn his captaincy back. Seems like he's done that. When Vrabel got hired peppers and Dugger both mentioned Vrabel reached out to them and talked to them about leadership and how he believes in them and thier abilities. How he wants to help them any he can become the best player they can be. Seems like peppers is still the vocal and emotional leader of the team.

I remember the huge deal that was made when the Patriots beat the Dolphins in the opening game of the 1974 season, which was the Phins first game after winning their second Super Bowl in a row.

Of course, the players' strike was 'blamed' for the Patriots' success.

The Patriots have never been credited with a simple legitimate win in the modern post-merger era.

The '74 Dolphins were also the last above .500 team Joe Namath defeated in his career.

The 2018 Chiefs scored 37.8 PPG when Hill, Kelce & Watkins played. While other teams were more complete like the 2014 Seahawks or 2001 Rams that was the best offense they faced. The pats were the only team in the NFL with the CBs in Gilmore, Jackson & Jones to contain them.

Shutting them out in the first half was one of the greatest defensive performances in NFL history. The refs were clueless in the second half with ticky tack calls on Jackson & a missed blatant pick play on the Chiefs. Still, the first half effort helped the pats play the style of game they wanted.

Then, when the pats needed to score on an offense with Hogan & Dorsett as the outside WRs Brady goes down the field twice & converts three third downs on the last drive for the win. Brady, Gronk & Edelman delivered in the biggest moments.

503 points scored (1st) ... 273 points allowed (6th)... 230 point differential (1st)

it was a game we were not expected to win... we were raw, our offense was average to be generous, the defense was rounding out at the perfect time though... and we had lost to them earlier in the season... at home...
The regular season game gave me confidence for the SB. They held their own against them.

As for the Rams' fans, they were way over the top confident. Silence of the Rams became a very real thing.

I'd also like to throw in the Squish the Fish game in Miami in 85. That was a curb-stomping in the AFC title game at Miami and was the first time a team won 3 playoff wins in a row on the road. Unfortunately, they faced the best defense in NYFL history in the SB.
