Who should the Pats have signed?

Who should they have signed:

Obviously Ice. And you may/may not be sarcastic here but I was thinking others.

But since you brought it up didn't they give him a non-guaranteed $1m 1 year contract? Wouldn't he be the best RB on the Pats st this point in the season?

Who should the Pats have signed and didn't? There is only one clear answer - Adam Seward.
I wasn't putting forth an answer I was thinking of starting a conversation outside of the obvious.

You're making my point? Or no? I was saying Givens was great here but not so much elsewhere.

Givens had 8 receptions with non-Patriots teams. Gaffney had his 3 best seasons after playing for the Pats. They are pretty much opposites. Now if Gaffney had stayed he likely doesn't put up the same numbers playing behind Welker/Moss/Gronk/etc. but I think he would have been a valuable #3 receiver on teams completely lacking one.

And clearly better than Ochocinco in the 2011 season. And he would have cost half as much.

Yeah, in hindsight letting him walk and getting Revis instead may have been a mistake, but it's one I was happy to see the Pats make at the time. Talib had what appeared to be a chronically bum hip while he was here, and credit to him for apparently getting it fixed in Denver but knowing what they knew at the time I can't fault the Pats at all for doing what they did. If he's here instead of Revis in 2014, there's a good chance we wouldn't have that fourth ring anyway.

Talib was arguably better than Revis in 2014. Talib was so good in 2013 for New England that he single handily won us the Atlanta game, and made the pro bowl...some were calling him the best corner in the NFL. He shutdown teams number 1 WRs every week except for Josh Gordon.

Another source of that specific instance, or another source of him dropping n-bombs in general? Because he left this voicemail for Jonathan Martin that was uncovered in the bullygate investigation:

I really can't believe your disagreeing with me. Talib was nothing short of a lockdown stud number 1 corner during his time in New England (eye test AND numbers back this up)...and since he's left he's been a top 3 corner in the NFL every year...I mean the guy is a stud...and only makes 7-8 million a year. Broncos got a steal

I disagreed for presumably the same reason why you disagreed with my original post: because I thought you were wrong. Talib wasn't better than Revis in 2014, he wasn't the best corner in the league in 2013 (he wasn't even particularly close) and when the AFCCG came around he was--as usual--MIA and of no use to the team at all.

Haha how people forget. Talib was elite elite in 2013, remember what he did to Julio Jones and Jimmy Graham? since he lefts he's arguably gotten even better, he's a superstar.

Givens' knee was destroyed shortly after he left New England, so I think it's slightly misleading to suggest that he was simply not good elsewhere. He probably would have been good in Tennessee--he was a good WR--if he hadn't had a freak injury.

It's funny you criticize him for not being around for the afc championship game. He was. He got taken out of the game on a dirty hit by Welker. Bb described it "a wide receiver deliberately tried to take out a defenseless player"

Without walkers hit, Talib stays in..who knows maybe we don't allow Peyton to pick us apart that day. Because after Talib left, he had his way with us.

Since Talib left..he's been an ironman in Denver, it helps when you get no blatant dirty blind side hits by wide receivers.

On what planet is a guy who shoots himself and then misses 3 games last year an 'ironman'?

That said, in my original post--the one that you threw a fit and disagreed with--I acknowledged that Talib has both improved his play and improved his durability since he left, so good job belatedly agreeing with me.

He's improved? Then how do you explain his amazing numbers in 2012-13 as a patriot where he made the pro bowl?

And of course, you didn't acknowledge the fact Wes Welker took Talib out of the afc championship game with what bb himself called a dirty hit in the post game press conference

How many games has Talib missed in the past four seasons?

The 2013 AFCCG was simply the last instance in which Talib was not available when we needed him. He had a history of getting hurt and not being around when it counted, and presumably that played a role in moving on from him. There's a reason why the folks on this forum in 2014 weren't exactly sad to see him go, and it's because he was injury-prone and nobody trusted him to be available down the stretch, even if he was a top-10 corner when healthy (which he was).

He's missed 8 games in the last 4 years. Not bad, but not an ironman either.

He wasn't available because he was taken out on a dirty hit by a wide receiver! Belichick himself made that clear in the post game press conference...how can you possibly blame that on Talib? He was available, until he got taken out on a dirty hit...bottom line

If you want to argue 2012 playoffs, that's fine, but you have nothing to back your argument in 2013

I ask that you watch the following video it's just 1:30 long

I definitely think we can give Talib a pass for 2013 afc championship after hearing that response from BB, or do you disagree with Belichick?

Not getting in the middle of the Talib debate because there are points for both sides, but his cap hit is 12m dollars this year.

His average annual value on the contract was approx. 10m a year.
