Tombonneau brought up the question of what people would do if we took Pope at #21. At #21, the selection of Pope wouldn't be questioned if it was another team, his draft value is good at that spot. It would be a questionable pick by the Pats because of who's already on the roster. What if someone falls though? Wilfork was a sure top 10 pick that fell in our laps at #21 in 2004. It just so happened that NT was a big need so it was an easy pick. What about a spot that isn't a need right now? Any studs you wouldn't be upset about if they fell to the Pats?
Vince Young? Mario Williams? Haloti Ngata? Vernon Davis? D'Brickashaw Ferguson?
I add Ferguson because there was a split on whether to take a tackle or not in the 1st round when it was brought up a while back. Some people think we're set. Others think we would do well to take one and upgrade.
Obviously taking Young would be the most questionable. How do you get him on the field? Williams, Ngata and Davis would have to split time with other players. My opinion is so what? If we were paying top 5 money, I think those selections would be beyond stupid. However, at #21, we get great players and insurance against injuries at a modest cap hit for years. Of course there's greater needs but I would be thrilled with any of those players.
While I'm not trying to say any of these guys are sure things or already trying to compare them to anyone, who would you rather have? The next Richard Seymour splitting time or the next Eugene Wilson starting? I for one would prefer the former.
