We're not getting a first for Thuney, and most likely not a second.
But if NE is offered a 2nd, I’d pounce. I love me some Thuney - but his price is going to be high, imo, especially when you consider how many former Patriots there are in other organizations.

Lol @ people thinking we will get some major windfall for Thuney. Yes he is very good but he is still a guard and someone will have to pay him. Maybe we get a second for him but I’d assume a third or they just hold on to him and let him walk for a comp third.

Same thing with Edelman. I don’t think there is any chance we get anything other than a late round pick for him. He’s got a banged up knee and outside of one game hasn’t looked great. He’s 34 and been a major part of what made us who we were. I would let him ride it out here and then get his red jacket in a few years.
Devil’s advocate : is he a guard for everyone ? Or would other organizations either try him at LT or C ?

Always knew this day would come after a near 20 year run. Didn't think it would be this fast. Sad. Wonder how long belichick is good for. Was hoping he'd break shula's win record.
This week game is real crucial...no doubt ...a win a we are in the hunt...a loss probably will change many many things because we will be "out" only after half season

The part you’re missing is if they trade him, they save like 7 mill in cap space for next season.

We are not in a cap crunch situation. Salary cap space is here to be able to put together a strong team and Thuney's presence makes the job for whoever ends up starting as QB easier. If they have no internal plans of extending him past this season then it is a different story but I don't see any evidence for assuming this is the case.

Creating cap space for the sake of itself is a pointless exercise.

Creating space means flexibility for the future. More cap space = more flexibility

Please, let me know how I am wrong. I am very curious now

I wouldn't be surprised if he played elsewhere but I would imagine they would bring him in as a guard because they're not going to want to pay him like a tackle.

BB made an interesting statement on TradeDeadline, he mentioned trade talks are Caserios job more or less, he gets involved once things are more or less almost final, so this puts a different light on the Sanu trade for 2nd last year, though BB has for sure approved it Caserio negotiated it...

Sure looks that way... but I hate to speculate too much. They all have a hand in personnel decisions, so nobody is blameless.

No point trading anyone away especially Thuney or Gilmore.

Thuney is someone to built around and moving your CB1 for no reason other than getting a lottery ticket that might or might not work out is self sabotage. Especially because there is no cap pressure to do any of it. Unless there is an unlikely godfather offer it is not worth it.

Nothing that happened in the last two weeks changed my mind about trading for players with 2-3 years deals whose teams -- thanks to COVID -- are in sell mode to get under the cap.

The only type of trade to avoid after how the last two games went are one year rentals unless its for marginal cost like a pick switch or a 5th/6th/7th and wouldn't cost too much in cap assets.
I think you and others need to temper expectations. This team will not be competitive for 2 years. Gilmore is 30. Thuney is 27. You don’t build around guys at that age. We weren’t competitive last year with a QB who has proven himself to still be able to compete at a high level, we won’t be next year with a young QB.

the only way we could land TL would be, to be in 3rd place, and he publicly refuses to play for either the jets or or the falcons.
Even if he refused (which I doubt) the real thing that happens is that they still draft and trade him

Cap space is a means to building a competitive team and not something inherently valuable by itself. Trading away great players who are just entering their prime when there is no financial pressure to do so doesn't help you build a competitive team. Especially at foundational positions like the OL.

At least with Gilmore people can bring up his age as an argument even though next year (in his final year) he will be cheap as **** which is usually not the case with veteran deals. With Thuney there is absolutely no reason at all to trade him away over 7m unless the team already has decided that they will not even attempt to extend him next year.

The opportunity cost of finding a replacement and developing that player isn't necessarily worth the amount of money you save. Especially for someone who brings so much flexibility with him and can play all 5 positions at the OL.

Finally, we will be rolling over about 26m into next year where we are projected to have over 70m in cap space. Yeah, some of it will get smaller just by HT and Chung being back on the roster. But the flexibility gained from saving 7m is very marginal relative to the cost of speeding up a crucial decision on moving on from an all pro player.

Why isn't "trade for a QB" an option, it's the biggest need position on the team?

I could see them trading older valuable assets like Gilmore or Thuney, just don't like or envision the trade to Titans part. We'll have to play these players for the next few years... look to the NFC.

Cam sucks, Stidham can possibly develop into something, maybe not... but he isn't a QB right now. This is a developmental and reloading year, forget the playoffs because they don't have a QB.

With a QB this is an instant playoff team, but you don't find these guys midseason and they won't find one before they're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. It doesn't mean I wouldn't immediately take Matt Ryan for next year though...
1. This is not an instant playoff team with a QB

2. Why trade a lot of value to get Ryan when he’s 35 and likely won’t be around in 3-4 years?

A team that needs a QB and is ready to make a run should be going for a short stint with Ryan

That depends on your definition of competitive. To me they were competitive this year until COVID hit the team.

BB has said again and again that he will build the most competitive team he can each year to succeed. I get that some losers posters here just want them to tank but clearly this is not what will be on the menu as long as BB is the coach.

And even if you disagree with all this on a philosophical level if you want to develop QB talent then your number one most important ingredient is a great OL to not ruin that young QB.

I get why people bring up Gilmore even though I personally disagree with it but to me there is not much reason to move on from Thuney unless someone offers a **** ton in return.

A team like the Bengals that has a young QB that is promising that is getting the hell beat out of him would spring for Thuney.

Yes. BB "shoved the acting GM of organization under the bus" for pointing out that he is responsible for the initial communication during trade talks.

What are you guys smoking ? What else did y'all think Caserio was doing in his role ?

I think we can be as soon as next season if all goes well. We're in great shape with our cap to bring in impact players and with probably a decently high draft pick. And if we're in third place then we get a third place schedule and won't have to deal with teams like the Steelers, Ravens and especially the Chiefs in Arrowhead next year.

I agree but they are also in the very early stages of a rebuild so I cant imagine they are giving up a high pick and then having to pay him.
