This pick says one thing: we will not ket CD's ability to stay healthy hold the 2006 season hostage.
Yes, the Patriots seem to be determined not to repeat 2005 again.

This pick shocked me, his name had not even been on my mind when we were drafting. I was thinking Jackson, Holmes, Lawson or D. Williams, with Justice or J. Williams on an outside chance. I had never even considered Maroney a candidate for the Patriots.

However, after thinking about it, the pick started looking better and better. Have faith in Belioli, they know what they're doing.

I like the pick. Maroney is a solid back...... Just a little surprising because I saw WR as the bigger need and all the WR's were on the board (santonio holmes). I hope this means we have a FA WR in the fold, so to speak..... Walker, Stallworth, etc.....

What a bad pick considering Lawson was available.

This does however, make me think that some sort of signing/trade is in the works at DB,WR because those really appear to be the pressing needs. Especially WR. But...the fact that none have been drafted could mean a big WR slide so...maybe they think thoer guy will be around in the second.

Good point. WRs must impressive enough to warrant first round status, though I suspect one wiill be picked before this is over. Maybe Steelers with a sleeper pick (hah).

Time to start thinking about second rounders!

This was a great pick and the one I wanted. Maroney has the size to handle the AFC East pounding and he has the speed.

That's the key - the AFC East has some tough defenses to face. We need an imposing RB that takes the hardship off Brady a bit and can run through the trenches. Like almost everyone else I was surprised, but pleased.

I like the pick. I wanted Lawson knowing he was there for the taking, but Maroney makes sense. I didnt want one of the wide outs. Not bad.

That's why I make it a point to ignore all pre-draft prognostication!

Lawson is a workout warrior who is good at one thing, pass rush. We have roosevelt coleman to do that. Maroney can really make a difference now and in the future.

Excellant pick - I've liked Maroney from the very beginning. We need fresh young legs - there's no way in my mind Corey can shoulder the bulk of the load through 16 games and deep into the playoffs.....way too much of a gamble to think that was going to happen.

A pick like this tells me that they see a LB in their sights that nobody else has their eye on, in the 2nd round.

D'Qwell Jackson perhaps?

I like the Maroney pick, by the way.

This is a good pick. The draft is deep enough that a guy like Mark Anderson will be available in the second to fill the olb need.

I wasnt suprised, and I really liked the pick. The Patriots worked out Mauroney in the scouting and if you paid attention, Mauroney was the RB that the Patriots seemed to be leaning towards, not DeAngelo or the other guys. Granted, their all pretty good.

A few of you negative turds should just shut up, when has BB/SP ever dissapointed you with their first round pick once the season had begun? Watson was injured in 04 but he showed great potential in 05. Mauroney will be our future back. Dillon and Faulk are ageing but their time as top RB's on the Pats isnt over, at least one more season before Mauroney gets the majority of the handoffs. He's not only a good runner and explosive, he can also catch the ball and recieve well, an unexpected target he will be through the air.

'We should have gotten a defensive player!! And a WR, why not LenDale White?!?'

The Pats werent gonna take a WR in the first round and people should know that. Unfortunately two of the LB's they wanted in the first round were gone. The DB's were taken quickly, Tye Hill would have been a great pick did he fall to the Pats. I'm very happy we got Mauroney though.

These are problably the same people who were groaning about Logan Mankins being our pick. You got a running back, at least you didnt get someone 'boring'

McDaniels brother is a grad assistant at Minny, saw the kids up close, inside info BB/SP must know a lot about the guy.

From Scouts analysis on ESPN.com, they seem to really like him:

Scouts take: New England needs linebackers, but this selection nevertheless could be a perfect match. Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk give the Patriots an excellent two-headed monster, but they have had problems staying healthy and are on the downside of their careers. Selecting Maroney allows the Patriots to groom him slowly so he's ready to step in when the time comes. That means the undersized Maroney won't have to carry a heavy workload and can work on his ability to pick up the blitz as well as on adding some bulk. New England should be happy with the pick, as well, because Maroney gives them a home run threat who can go the distance any time he touches the ball. His ability to bounce off tackles also suggests he will develop into an excellent every-down back if he can add some weight to his frame.

Thought for sure it would be Lawson or Holmes but there was only one RB taken before we picked and Maroney was always the second or third rated back depending on where you looked. Good size and 4.47 will be nice to have in our backfield, the Huddle advised to just have a little patience bringing this guy along and he will be a difference maker.

i was a bit surprised by this pick, but it makes sense. If BB likes him, I do.
To those of you who think RB was not a big need for us, let me refresh your memories: Mike Cloud, Amos Zeroue, Heath Evans. We were getting guys off the street last year. We've been replenishing the position with vet FA's and late round picks for a while.
That said, now can we PLEASE get a LB?

SI.com analysis
"Not that we're counting or anything, but remember Jay Cutler? He was the last offensive player taken (at No. 11) before the Patriots picked Maroney. And Maroney, as it turns out, isn't even the top-ranked running back on the boards (non-Bush division). You figure it out. The Patriots need a RB, considering that Corey Dillon played in only 12 games last year and doesn't have much left. But they need wideouts, too. A cornerback wouldn't hurt. A linebacker would be nice. Oh, well."

Gild Brandt had Maroney 2nd on his board. here is an excerpt of his comments:

"Maroney is a very powerful runner with strong legs and has very good quickness and vision. He can carry the ball a lot of times per game and not get worn down -- he will play at 225 pounds. Minnesota head coach Glen Mason and offensive coordinator Mitch Browning talk about Maroney as both a great person and player. If he goes to a zone-blocking team, he may be in the Pro Bowl as a rookie. He had not been asked to block and runs a little high. He caught only four passes his first two seasons but did catch 17 for 170 yards and a touchdown in 2005. "

Sounds like a good fit. Josh McDaniels brother is a grad assistant at Minny, so we have info from someone who saw him every day.

Like all BB picks feel better as I learn more.

Me too, I've calmed down quite a bit, and now I'm ready to see the next Clinton Portis playing for us! Abdul Hodge in round 2!!!
