What Are Chances Patriots Make Splash Trade For Justin Fields?

If they had the power of the purse, as Belichick had, and the all time wins record was in their sight, what do you think any other coach would have done with that cap money? Had it been Parcells in that situation they would be 250 million over the cap right now. Belichick deserves credit for showing restraint with the $$$ just as much as he deserves the blame for blowing way over 100 million in his last free agent spending spree. He left them with a very good defense, a very bad offense, but plenty of $$$ to go into the offseason with.
Your right, Curran confirmed that Bill happen to be a very frugal person himself so that played perfectly. No owner is going to no don't save me any money. So your right Bill deserves all the credit for that. Have to take the positive with the negative. Agreed on the defensive side. The team can compete at a championship level on defense. So we have at least part of the team in great shape. I've said that the irony is when Bill took over he inherited pillars from Parcells/ Carroll era. Now mayo has inherited some defensive pillars to start his legacy. Peppers, judon, gonzo, Jones, barmore, Jennings, white, Godchaux, Dugger, those guys can ball.

If that means passing on the QB at # 3 then it still leaves them with no QB for the future. If they got him for 5th, drafted a QB at 3, then used him for 1 season and got a 3rd round compensatory pick for him then I would be fine with it. But any scenario where he was still on their roster in 25’ can count me out.
They are taking a QB anyway. I don't know if it will be at 3 though. We need so much. LT, RT, WR. Sometimes players need change of scenery Sometimes.

How did the Krafts do with spending before Bill took over? I don't remember them taking such a hard stance as Bill did when he got control of the purse strings, but I was never into the financial aspects of the game and may have missed that. The first time I remember complaints was when Bill traded Seymour.
They had a lot of overpaid players at the top of the roster and the team from 1-53 wasn't good.

Bill had full control and that means that he's responsible for everything, good and bad, Unfortunately, his bad became worse and worse the last 4 years and Kraft rightfully dumped him.

Bill's "fiscal responsibility" had him dump three of the best offensive players they ever had and that left our team in the ****ter, while at the same time making himself the highest paid HC and going cheap on coaches. No hate there, just facts.
We don't know what happened at the end. Two years ago Kraft said he was making the draft a more "collaborative" effort. He also pushed to have coaches added to the staff. Bill clearly didn't have full control at the end and there was clearly a power struggle.

Three of the best offensive players they ever had... who? Tom was a free agent and left. Gronk retired, came back for a year and then retired again. I don't know the third person you're referring to.

Yeah, it only worked for two decades and they did something no other team in over a hundred years of professional football did.

Slackers...
Not to beat a dead horse.. but your right it did work well Bill was great at what he did. However having the guy like Brady just such a humble super star consistently taking less than Market deals for the greater good of the team tremendously not only helped Bill but ownership run things as they all collectively did. It took the ownership, the HC, and the quarterback all together to have the lasting success.

Tom took less from 2014 on, and yes that was a massive show of leadership, as big as you'll see in professional sports. BB also capitalized on that and played in 4 Super Bowls and won 3 of them over that time span.

I agree, it was a team effort. Tom played with great defenses/lines/special teams and had good/great teams around him the majority of his career. That is something that his peers cannot say.

Absolutely agreed. Just reflecting on things I appreciate all 3 men. It just takes that type of collaboration to have lasting success in the NFL

The simple problem that some here are still unwilling to bring up is our QB has sucked since Brady left. Our defense was good to great, even after losing their top 2 players. Our running game was very good, and still good after losing RS, a top 10 in the league RB. Blaming coaches and coordinators at some point becomes a fools errand. It was the QB, he consistently choked in the big moments. A bad qb makes his tight ends, wr's and even oline worse. The problem wasn't spending money, it was having the most important player on the team blow chunks. I have no idea wheter Mac was kept because of Bill or because of Kraft, but this is probably at least a 500 team, even with the injuries with mediocre qb play. We haven't had that since Tom left. Bringing in Fields who can run, but pretty much sucks every where else isn't fixing that. Bring in Brisette, draft a qb and fix the rest of the o in free angency and the draft.

I think he

And then, after not drafting well and coaching attrition, it all came crashing down. So there’s that.

They missed on the QB position.

Andy Reid missed on Kevin Kolb in Philly and it got him fired. Has Reid forgotten how to coach?

If Mac Jones was good we’re not even having this conversation.

Cousin, Case in point to all the Fields haters (I am not his fanboy). Look no further than at Jared Goff

"The Rams shipped Goff and picks to Detroit in exchange for Stafford in a deal that produced an instant (and necessary) upgrade under center, supplying Rams head coach Sean McVay with the veteran quarterback he so desperately desired after he concluded he could never win a title with Goff"

Did a few more games under his belt and a Team that embraced him help Goff? Is he at least a top fifteen QB?

Honestly, how many on the forum would have wanted to see Jared Goff as the QB for the Pats? Be honest. How many now would want him?

Goff became a 4th down gaff by the head coach away of playing for the NFC Title this year.

Fields is young. He has improved . He has an arm. He can avoid the faults of what will be a young OL with his legs rather than "turtle" like Mac. . Yep I would say I would be of the church to trade for Fields........but get me a #1 WR.

You think they will give up 2 first rounds and Jefferson for our #3 pick this year?
They went hard last year (Richardson?) to move up and has Captain Kirk. The have two #1 WR in Addison and Jefferson. The cost without a player trade could be three #1 picks Cousin....So they have to think about it.

You have to ask yourself do I have faith that Maye or Daniels if I put all my chips in, that those players will have a better record than 4-13 in 2024? Or do you have faith that Jefferson and a bridge QB can win a few more games and make this Team competitive while you take a mid pack QB like Rattler or McCarthy and have them sit and learn while you have a 24 year old super star #1 you could tie up for years?

OK, so you hate Fields. Denver will deal Wilson if you make them pay some of his contract. Would Kirk and Jefferson here together in 2024 work? We can afford them. Would Mayfield leave Tampa?

Some mention 31 year old Brissett, Cousins........ he is a 61% career passer. Mac Jones is a 66% career passer if we go there . Fields is 25.

Just some of my thoughts

I keep reading posters talk about how Fields avoids sacks because of his mobility. Fields was #5 in sacks (44). Here's a list of sacks per pass attempt % (min. 200 attempts):

Tannehil - 13.9%
Z Wilson - 12.5%
J Fields - 11.9%
Zappe - 11.8%
Young - 11.8%
Levis - 11%
R Wilson - 10.6%
Howell - 10.6%
Mac Jones - 6.4%

The trade is ludicrous, there's no way they give up that much for a single 1st round pick

To Team Bill blaming it all on Mac who do you think picked Mac? Let me guess, mean old Mr. Kraft made Bill take him?
. Mac sucks, but he isn't the only one from his draft. He was the fifth qb taken in his draft. Four of the five qb's suck. Every qb not taken 1st in the 1st round sucked that year. Really I blame covid for making it this bad that year, no real games, no fans in the stands etc extremely hard to judge based upon that. That all being said, it is of course the GM's responsibility to draft the players, or get good ones. However, I am past Bill and talking about the team. You are what your record is, but when you have a top 10 defense, and a top 10 running game you aren't is as bad a spot as the bottom teams usually are. Plus 8 of their games were lost by one score. Therefore, I am not as down on this team as many.

The vikings trade for Jefferson + 11 + 2025 pick 1 looks enticing.

If 3 quarterbacks are taken at that point go with the 4th one which is JJ mccarthy . Even if we miss we have two more 1st rounders and Jefferson.
Looks enticing?

If the trade was offered and the Patriots turned it down then the entire FO and ownership are inept.

You’re essentially getting what you hope MHJ “could” be a guy who you are slated by some to take at #3 any way

And getting two first round picks, including a high one this years

Yes yes yes, a hundred times yes
