Wes Welker's contract

I would extend Wes during the Bye week if I were the Pats. If we let this continue until the end of the season it will cost a LOT more $$ to extend Welker.

I just hope that Pats see what they have in Welker, sure his "value" on the open market will be less that his value to the pats, but I hope this time the pats look to the players value to the pats (chemistry with TB) and not his value on the open market (how well he'll play with Carlson Palmer)

I do think the two parties will do the right thing . . .

Do you see the kind of crazy money being slung around in free agency? Welker would get 10m on the open market easily. He would be the best available free agent WR in 2012. I'm hoping the Pats can sign Welker to a team-friendly extension. The sooner they get it done, the better. If he ever gets to the open market his price tag will inflate tremendously!

Mayo still has one more year on his contract, and with the exception of TFB, I can't think of a single rookie whose contract was extended prior to his last year as a Patriot.

The biggest issue i see in open market a team like the rams , kansas city will pay him 10 million a yr. The pats will value him a slot guy and not much. If they do i cannot see them offer him more than 5-6 million yr.

I see all this threads on deion etc which makes no sense due to this.Ocho is a outside guy and they are giving him 6.5 million of the position. they will never pay the slot guy that.

so the decision will not be 1 million a year between FA and Pats. I am thinking it will more like 3-4 million.franchise tag is 12 million and he can play here or be traded.

also , helps deion is not going to anywhere and resigns for 3-4 million a yr on 2 yr contract, ocho on one sidee.Edelman is always injured so draft anther WR and keep price is rotate with deion when he goes down.

(A) They paid him $6.5M in cash this year, but that's not the average value of the contract.

(B) More importantly, Welker is the cog that makes this engine go. We know Welker had enough of losing with the LOLphins, so he's only going to go to a team he thinks is a contender that can make good use of him. Right now, he's playing far too well for the Patriots to allow that to happen.

Welker is one of the best receivers to ever play for this team, hands down. He also, to me, seems like he's incredibly humble and won't ask for a Larry Fitzgerald type contract. This is a guy who believed he would be a kick and punt returner in the NFL and he now has a chance to beat the GOAT's yardage in a single season.

Kraft did say today on his radio appearance that he hopes Welker plays out his career here. .

In Kraft's +/-20 yrs of owning the team, can you remember Kraft saying he didn't want to pay one of his players or saying that he didn't hope that player X would play out his career here? It just doesn't happen. So I really wouldn't put too much stock in this quote.

Wes Welker wasn't drafted. Logan Mankins never said he expected to be anything more than a special teams player.

Completely different backgrounds for the two.

Welker has had a much more humbling career being undrafted, cut, and traded.

Granted, he's proven everyone wrong for letting him go and made BB look like a genius for getting him, what has he done to make you think he ISN'T the humble player? Welker just isn't the guy I see holding out, and either way he'll be franchised if a deal isn't done in time. Welker makes this offense run just as much as Tom Brady does.

i hope you are right. until wes shows up to the table sans agent (ala Bru), I really would have a hard time saying his background is going to dictate how he handles this windfall payday. Brady was benched his sr yr in college, picked 199 and didn't have an issue becoming the highest paid player per year in the history of the sport. Not trying to compare the 2 but just saying I think 3/4/5/6 yrs out into your career, you want to get paid because of the player you are now, not where you came from. If anything, because he is so prone to having a shorter career with all these hits he takes, he might want to get paid more, not less.

they need to pay him a good amount. But you can't pay him so much that it hurts the ability to keep or sign other players.
This is not MLB, there is a hard cap.

I really hope that he gets paid well and is happy. But I'm not going to say to pay him any price to keep him.

Except that Welker wants to be useful, and he knows that he won't be as useful if he's playing somewhere with a bad QB. So why would he go to the Redskins at the start of free agency?
