Of course the flaw in this if you are comparing the evaluation made by a professional who is paid to be charge of such decisions to the opinions of guys who no one hires to make those decisions.Swinging for the fences is fine, drafting guys 2-3 rounds ahead of their projection is idiotic. And I can think to a handful of times what Belichick did went beyond “swinging for the fences” and instead seemed like a massive FU to the drafting process
If Cole Strange is expected to be. 3-4 round pick why would you take him at the end of the first? Especially when only two other guards went in the next two rounds?
That’s not swinging for the fences, it’s ego.
When the “draftniks” disagree with the drafters more often than not the draftniks are wrong because a better evaluator with more knowledge about the player (and a staff of people evaluating him) made the pick.
Of course since not only is predicting a humans future difficult, but agreeing on how the player turned out is uncommon, the drafters are excoriated for the ones that don’t work out and the draftniks get a pass.
