Swinging for the fences is fine, drafting guys 2-3 rounds ahead of their projection is idiotic. And I can think to a handful of times what Belichick did went beyond “swinging for the fences” and instead seemed like a massive FU to the drafting process

If Cole Strange is expected to be. 3-4 round pick why would you take him at the end of the first? Especially when only two other guards went in the next two rounds?

That’s not swinging for the fences, it’s ego.

Of course the flaw in this if you are comparing the evaluation made by a professional who is paid to be charge of such decisions to the opinions of guys who no one hires to make those decisions.
When the “draftniks” disagree with the drafters more often than not the draftniks are wrong because a better evaluator with more knowledge about the player (and a staff of people evaluating him) made the pick.
Of course since not only is predicting a humans future difficult, but agreeing on how the player turned out is uncommon, the drafters are excoriated for the ones that don’t work out and the draftniks get a pass.

A couple of inches of wingspan it irrelevant. No one blinks with theirvatnd outstretched horizontally. If they do they are already beaten and an inch longer finger isnt helping.

Campbells wingspan is an oddity (by a couple inches) for a guy his size. But it will have no impact on his play.
Techniques, strength, quickness, agility, attitude, and coach ability are what matters not minor differences in how far your maximum horizontal reach is.

And thats why i said not today Andy, i know better then to argue for hours with you because nothing changes your mind. So i could waste my time finding videos to show you what i am talking about but years of experience tell me you will just dismiss them. I am not unhappy with the Campbell pick, i hope he will be a fine LT for the next decade i just recognize he does have flaws and poor wingspan is one of them.

Then you havent been paying attention, i've heard it used often and its more important then the arm length everyone has been losong thier minds over. The most important thing an offensive lineman can do is be big and wide so its harder for a defensive lineman to get around them. In pass protection its all about making the angle they have to get around longer, its why a buzz phrase for DEs is bend or getting around the corner fast, and why wingspan matters. Yes you never see them playing with both arms spread wide but you do frequently see them playing 80% spread to balance taking away the outside and not get too far in case they do an inside counter. The bigger the wingspan the better you can take away both outside speed rushes and inside counter power moves. The issue with Campbell that does show up on tape is he has to pick one or the other and for a skilled passrusher with multiple moves (you know the vast majority of NFL players) he has to overcompensate one way or the other and makes up for his lack of width with excellent torque and footspeed.

I started listening to this years draft podcasts last September, and I listened to them weekly throughout the fall and winter right up to the draft. And not once did I hear the phrase “ wingspan” used in them. I heard plenty of talk about shorter arms throughout that time, but pretending that arm length matters more that playing ability isbgmotant. If that were the case there would be no need to replace Verdarian Lowe, and Trent Brown would be the greatest OT of all time.

At any rate, we’ll see how this plays out, my money is on Campbell.

Then you shouldn’t have argued. My mind is readily changed by a strong argument. It’s not changed by the same tired old argument I gave already evaluating depth and disagree with. I don’t give opinions unless I feel strongly, so thinking you gave me new information that will change my mind is a mistake. While you incorrectly see that as stubborn the reality is I think through all sides before forming an opinion so just repeating what everyone else says isn’t swaying me.
You can’t show me videos I haven’t seen. Thats the problem here. You arrogantly act like you have information I don’t, and that’s not the case.
Every player has flaws. Wingspan is very low on the list of what a flaw is and is something that can 100% be a non-factor with proper technique and skills. Dante Scarnecchia agrees me perhaps you can argue with him.
