Anyone know the story of SMU “death penalty”?

There's a great ESPN 30 for 30 about that whole debacle.

Caught paying recruits, suspended from bowl games for a few years.

The punishment was also some other stuff. They were forbidden from having home games for 2 years so they decided to simply not play football those 2 years. Then they lost something like 40 scholarships for some period of time, so even when they returned to the field, they were abysmal. It is literally something the program never recovered from (although they are having a decent year this year).

Josh Allen is a winner. I love it. From the Brady ILK doesn’t give a **** about stats - well Brady cares about stats but wins are by far the most important for him and I think that’s the same for Allen. I reckon Murray is the same and Herbert as well

Did they cheat, yes. Did all those other schools in the southwest conference cheat as well? Yes. A part of me feels bad that they were made an example of.

I am a huge fan of Herbert. That guy is solid! I was hoping for us moving up to get him but I’m happy with Mac without having to give up the farm.

Allen got that grit of being a leader on the field, he just makes plays happen. He has a cannon of an arm and can also run when you man up.

Lastly I wanted to point out that refs in this game have been absolute garbage.

Really disappointing that Allen is in the AFCE - I would have really loved barracking for him over the next several years. Now I have to hate him
