Week 15 NFL Playoff Picture: Six Teams Can Clinch Playoff Spots

John Morgan

Heading into Week 15 only the Dallas Cowboys have clinched a playoff spot. After this weekend that is bound to change. Six other teams, including the New England Patriots, can punch a ticket to the post-season this weekend.

If Dolphins lose tonight

We win the division. Do we clinch the bye also? I think we do actually.

Just based off looking at the standings real quick, the Steelers may be able to snag our spot if we lose out and they win out, just because it's possible for them to have a better AFC record (we're 8-1, they're 6-3, both with 3 games to go).

EDIT: Confirmed:

New England clinches a first-round bye:
1) NE win or tie
2) MIA loss or tie + PIT loss or tie
3) MIA loss or tie + KC win

But we beat Pittsburgh earlier this year, giving us the tiebreaker. So I don't think that's true.

EDIT: I believe you're correct only if all three of the Raiders, Patriots, and Steelers finish 11-5. Thats the only scenario in which we would have the 3rd seed.

So yeah, technically it won't be clinched. But it would take a crazy scenario to not earn a top 2 seed with a Miami loss tonight.

Yeah, we should feel pretty secure about the bye. If we piss away the last 2 weeks like last year, there's a very real risk of losing the #1, but we all know that.

NE also gets the #3 if KC, PIT, and NE tie at 11-5. NE needs to beat either DEN or NYJ to get the tiebreaker over KC.

why is there a game on tonight?

Now you need to wash your fingers thoroughly.

Does anybody know what needs to happen for the Pats to get the #1 seed?

Somewhere, somehow, you're missing 1/4 of the season. And Pittsburgh has certainly lost more than 3 games. Either way, Ill trust you with the clinching scenario.

Can't earn it this week regardless of what happens.

If the Pats can beat Denver tomorrow, they could be in position to earn the #1 seed next week if they beat the Jets and Oakland loses (either tomorrow or next week). There are other scenarios too, but that's the easiest and clearest way.

we have head to head tie breaker though? I think we should clinch a first round bye just with a Miami loss tonight? Why does Pitt need to lose they already have 5 losses...

Record within the AFC.
