We gotta pay Tonga

He’s not playing bad, still good as a run stopper. Just going back to what he’s been as a pass rusher. Average, with a knack to get some cleanup sacks.
Which is exactly what all the scouting reports and analysts said about him in TEN last year. I think we're getting exactly what we should have expected out of Landry.

I was on record this offseason saying I thought Landry was almost washed, and wouldn't do much.
I was happy to eat crow the first few weeks, but he has completely regressed and lost all impact.
Jennings can't pass rush, White is gone, Ponder is another 1-trick pony, I don't know who we have to complement Chaisson - who can't be a 1 man end. Maybe Murphy??
But EDGE is a top priority next year

If I wasn't so cheap, I would get a Tonga jersey. Do they even have a Tonga jersey.
If there's a vederian lowe jersey thier sure as **** is a Tonga one!!

Josh I believe
I told them to try it..

He's been playing through injury.. Landry gotta give him credit. But yes agreed edge is definitely a high priority for sure.. Jennings is a edg/ run player.. his value will show up against guys like Taylor in the playoffs..

The only person that should be paying lowe is home depot.. Definitely agreed on Chaisson, Tonga are high priority resigns.. for sure.

Not Home Depot ... Lowe's.

You disagree with Vrabel, as is often the case.

Vrabel chose to keep Lowe on the roster as our backup LT and 6th OL. He is always active.

If he agreed with you, Vrabel would have replaced Lowe or at very least have him inactive and had Bryant as the swing OT, beacking up both OT's.

Vrabel has added lots of backups. He has chosen to keep an acceptable, experienced backup. Lowe is likely to be here next year, again competing for the backup LT roster spot. We should draft a RT unless Vrabel thinks that Bryant is a viable future starter.

Not sure I agree that Lowe is likely to be back. He's a FA, free to go wherever he wants. I would guess that he might want to go somewhere where the starting LT isn't a #4 overall pick who played well. There's more opportunity for playing time in other places I bet. And I can't imagine we make it financially worth his while to stay,

You presume that Lowe thinks that he can a contract to start elsewhere. Not even his agent will tell him that.

Lowe is a career backup. He understands that and has posted that evaluation.

Lowe should be looking for a 3-year contract as a backup, with game and starter incentives. ie xpect that he could get this from the patriots.

Can’t let him leave that is all.

Have a feeling someone will make him a Milton Williams size offer.
I hope he's not that expensive! But yeah definitely he has fit our team like a glove. He does everything: plays defense, ST, and even offense as our new fullback. It's crazy what a versatile piece he has become for the Patriots.

I didn't say he could get a contract to start. He's a backup, like you said, and will get backup contracts. But I think he can get a backup contract on a team with more of a question mark at LT, thus increasing his chance for playing time which can be parlayed into a bigger deal elsewhere.

Do you have a comparable for a 3 year backup contract at OT? I took a look at Spotrac and sorted by active contracts at OT by number of years: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/_/position/t

I don't think there's a single 3 year contract in the NFL right now at the position that's not either starter money or rookie deal. The contract you're describing doesn't really exist in the current NFL market as far as I can see.

Agree to disagree on your last statement. Give him a fair deal now. Same with Chaisson.
Yeah I feel like the sooner the Patriots lock up these two to contract extensions the better. We can give them sizeable and fair upgrades to salary without breaking the bank at this point in time. If they get all they way to free agency they might get offered inflated deals that we don't enjoy matching.

I love Tonga but I think this forum is inflating the potential salary for a third DT (behind Williams and Barmore) about to turn 30.

3 years 18 million seems like a reasonable deal imo.

agree about inflation, and many are much too high in their numbers for him
I think Tonga gets exposed if he is playing too many snaps.
he is in a perfect situation, but at 30+ years old, has peaked, and Durden and Farmer are ascending.

Please give a comparable contract for a LT that has acknowledged that he is a career backup and well understands that he is NOT starter quality.

Some players should try to maximize their carrers by understanding their abilities and possibilities.

Extending Tonga will solidify the line through 2028, including starters and backups.

To me, that is worth a lot.

SIGNED THROUGH
2028 Barmore
2028 Milton
2028 Tonga (after 3-year extension)
2028 Farmer
2027 Gregory (2028 RFA)
2026 Durden (2027 ERFA)

Some of them can still play well in their thirties.

I wouldn't sign anything if I were Chaisson. I'd bet on myself to break the 10 sack mark and cash out in FA. I think he'll be gone like Mark Anderson was after 2011.

So, you expect that another team will give Chaisson a better deal than we will.

I don't know why this would be the case. Vrabel broke the bank last year, and this year we have many fewer holes to fill that require a top-level contract.
