Yeah, Im not sure. I read another thing on google that said if they coached at the professional level they could still be considered. Not sure if that is true or not though.
Yea man it's a mystery. I'll dig into it tomorrow.

It just seems off....

Per NFL.com:

The program's objective is to use NFL clubs’ training camps, offseason workout programs and minicamps to give talented coaches opportunities to:

  • Observe
  • Participate
  • Gain experience
  • Ultimately gain a full-time NFL coaching position
Designed as a vocational tool to increase the number of full-time NFL minority coaches, all 32 NFL clubs participate each year. Specific aspects of the program — including hiring, compensation and coaching duties — are administered on a club-by-club basis. The NFL does not mandate any elements of the fellowship to the clubs, but it recommends several best practices, including:

  • Hiring participants for the duration of training camp, including all pre-season games.
  • Encouraging clubs to hire at least two fellows with an offensive coaching background.
  • Mentoring participants in the form of continuing and constructive feedback regarding their work while with the club.

Applicants must meet one of the following prerequisites to be considered for the fellowship:

  • Former NFL player
  • Coaching experience at either the high school, college, and/or other football leagues level (CFL, UFL, etc.)
The Process: Applicants will fill out the online application and select the top 5 NFL clubs they have an interest in completing a fellowship with. Clubs will be alerted of the application submission and will reach out to the applicant individually for further steps if they so choose.

Timing: Fellowships can take place during OTAs, minicamps, or Training Camp and the length of the fellowship ranges from a few days to a few weeks. In select cases, clubs have extended a fellow to work on staff with them for a season or year.
That sounds like it is focused on training the coach. So maybe Troy has realized he needs to improve those skills. Makes sense from a career development perspective for him.

Curious what’s in it for the team? Certainly political points with the league. Is there also some subsidy or assistance to them to support the program goals? Do they get subsidized for a train-the-trainer position, or anything like that?

Kinda chuckle looking at the status as of now of the coaches that were actual Mayo hires.

Mayo: jobless
Covington: jobless (edit: DL coach in GB)
Hughes: jobless
Slater: jobless
Hightower: jobless
Brown: employed, with a huge demotion

The only (other) guy who has kept similar employment is Mike Pellegrino, who was a holdover from BB. Same for Brian Belichick though he’s currently also jobless, we’ll see on that one. Some of the guys Wolf found and hired have found jobs, though.

On January 30, 2025, Covington was hired to serve as the defensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers.[9]

Brian Belichick is joining his dad. Bill Belichick Adds Second Son, Brian, To North Carolina Coaching Staff

It seems as though as Mayo was initially a placeholder due to his buyout clause. It was cheaper for Kraft to keep him than fire him and hire Vrabel in 2024. Deep down, I don’t think Kraft wanted this which became obvious with how fast Mayo was fired.

The staffs are already night and day better.
