I left him out of my blog post but he did a great job last night and truthfully all season as a blocker. If you think about it, this is a situation that really could have gotten nasty with lesser players requesting a trade and not being happy with their role. Instead, Allen has been a trooper and he's done a great job. Wish he was more of a weapon in the passing game, but he definitely deserves a lot of credit for what they were able to do during this championship run.

A huge reason for their second half resurgence and the team having a real playoff weapon in the running attack.

I’ve always wished they could find a way to use him more as a receiver in the RZ. But then when you have him, Gronk and Develin blocking in the RZ, you get a rookie RB scoring 6 RZ playoff TDs so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

2TE Allen, Gronk, with Develin, behind Shaq Mason and 3time-champion Marcus Cannon off right tackle run is an elite grouping.

I agree with your analysis.

I would note that Allen was well paid for this role. At his compensation level, he SHOULD be willing to be a trooper.

He’s basically Daniel Graham without the catches. Graham was a Mackey award winning TE in college because he caught a lot of passes. But he was so unselfish as a Patriot. He was a great blocking TE. And threw in a few decent catch seasons. Allen run blocks like Graham. And it’s invaluable.

however, dumping him will clear 7.4M off of next years cap......pretty much pays for 2019 of signing either brown or flowers.....maybe he would come back for less

Patriots never practiced offensive package that led to winning TD
“It was a pretty amazing thing,’’ Allen said. “Hats off to the Rams. They really knew us. They played us great. But football’s about in-game adjustments. Josh told us on the sideline, ‘We did not practice this at all coming into this game, and I realize that, but this is going off in my head, and it’s something I think we need to do.'”
