Umm...isn't that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

Re: Umm...isn\\\'t that EXACTLY WHAT WE WANTED?

I agree that Mayo if he lives up to his billing in the middle will help but they could have gotten the same thing that they might want out of Wheatley in the nickel by moving Hobbs there and drafted a better CB like Thomas.

As I said, I hope I am wrong about Wheatley but I dont expect him to be on this team after training camp.

Unless he steals Belichick's car, there is NO doubt he'll be on the team after training camp.

DRC & Wheatley

OK, BradytoMoss -- I just had a little brainstorm! Meet Rogers-Cromartie & Wheatley:

6-1.4 184 4.29/2.51/1.41 17 38 1/2 10'11" 4.17 6.74
5-9.5 187 4.37/2.50/1.48 17 36 1/2 10'08" 4.20 6.74

Those numbers are pretty darned close in almost every respect except height. (Willowy Wheatley even weighs more!) Both earn raves for their football skills and production, but Wheatley did it against the Big 12, DRC in the Ohio Valley Conference. In short, Wheatley is DRC minus 4 inches and more experienced/polished. Sure, I'd take DRC first in a heartbeat, but there's every reason to think Wheatley can do well for the Pats.

For comparison, here's Mayo & Lofton - final number in bold is Wonderlic:

6-1 242 4.54/2.58/1.50 32 09'06" 4.29 7.31 26
6-0 246 4.79/2.73/1.59 24 08'09" 4.56 7.69 16

Huge, huge difference. If Wheatley is DRC minus the height, Lofton is Mayo minus the athleticism and intelligence -- at the defensive position that most requires intelligence. And Lofton was the next ILB on the board...and would have cost 2 extra picks!

Read over Wheatley's numbers again while contemplating quotes like "Type of athlete that performs best against top-level competition, as he loves the challenge...Dependable field leader who will spend extra time mentoring the younger players...Could possibly make a good coaching candidate one day due to his grasp of the playbook." Feeling better yet?

Personally, I'm giddy. We just acquired 2 quality starting players for our team, one of whom has the potential to be truly special. What's not to like?:rocker:

I'm giddy too. Though, I would have been giddy no matter whom we drafted. But yeah, a trade down, an ILB in the first and the best corner on the board in the second - fcuken awesome. And the fact that they didn't trade up with those three thirds to get to a bettwer CB tells me that they either are working a trade, or they intend on using all picks to restock youth into the roster.

Very well put, I was feeling good already, now I feel great! Round 3 might have me doing backflips with just 1 or 2 neat picks that could really add some super depth at some critical positions. Yay Sunday!

I found this short interview with Wheatley by a Cowboys-affiliated radio program. Nothing of great interest except for the fact that he knows how to speak the English language and he says Colorado played a lot of man coverage. I'd be particularly happy with Wheatley if this means they are looking to play a more aggressive scheme in the secondary.
