I think that can vary depending on the team. I don't know what the plan they've determined is, but my guess is they have a specific list of things they want him to show, in a planned order (get the footwork up to speed, then get the playcalls and cadence down pat, etc), and they're sticking to that so as not to overwhelm him. Remember, he was the youngest QB with very little starting experience in college. If there's a "right" way to do it, there's no reason to scrap that and rush him just because Brissett has been uninspiring.
That makes sense. IMO, the footwork has looked good and the plays have been getting out fast enough but who knows what is really going on. I'm sure there's a lot left to learn in regards to reading a coverage, but I don't think that's a necessity to keep a guy from starting - and he'd probably learn it faster seeing it live instead of on the bench and having to go back and look at it on film.

Based on Mayo's comments this week it seems like they might think he is capable of executing a completed "plan" and just needs to show it.

conventional wisdom says to sit Maye for a year. desperate fanbases (and owners losing money) say to make that half a season.
Mayo sounds like he's actually considering making it sooner.
If they were sure Brissett was going to play the first 4-8 games, he would have confirmed JB as the starter.
I don't think Maye will start week 1, but I think the gap is MUCH closer than they thought it'd be.
And, it'll only take going 1-5 for Maye to come in. And that's good IMO.

It’s such a small sample size of him actually playing…I’m just not even sold he is capable of catching the deep ball somewhat consistently…but I’d like to see him get to that point so we can find out.

Thats kind of where im at with him. This is great to see but Still want to see him prove that he is a gamer when it matters and able to stay healthy.

Sort of in the same boat with boutte. Last preseason too he made some great plays then was a catastrophe week 1. These 2 likely will make the roster so hopefully get a bigger sample from both at least until bourne returns.

Preseason defensive schemes are extremely basic with little in the way of disguised coverages or exotic blitz packages.
Even Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions his first year.

I think it would be wise to at least let Maye get 4-6 games on the sideline watching Brisset and learning how to handle more complex defensive schemes that will be thrown at him.

Pats knew when they drafted him that he is young and has had relatively little experience compared to Daniels for example.

Starting him too early and having him get shellacked and throwing interception after interception could ****** his progress.

I love how GB handled Love's development and think the Pats should take a similar approach. Unfortunately, Brisset is not Aaron Rodgers.

The other part that is tough here is Mayo leaving the window so open, saying Maye can "win the job with good performance" etc - so if he is NOT named the starter for week 1, that makes it look like he failed somehow to certain segments of the media...

We just signed Matt Landers off waivers and I am excited. I wanted us to draft him last year. He is 6'4 200 pounds ran a 4.37(I put no faith in the 40) and jumped 37 inches. I am very excited about this. I don't think he will make the 53 but maybe the practice squad with a chance to develop.

I also think that this is another way that starting Maye is helpful - less potential Tyquan injury risk. If Brissett is throwing deep to him, it's less accurate and he has to try to adjust and track the ball and probably goes to the ground. If Maye is throwing deep to him, there's a good chance it's a dime right in his hands in stride.
Put tyquan also on pup to start the season while maye sits. Get him back on week 5 .no tyquan for brissett

You can’t put someone on PUP once they’ve started practicing. They have to start camp on PUP. If they practice at all they are ineligible, if they get injured after that then the only option is IR.

I don't think that Daley offers an upgrade to Lowe

Heck, I would sign Daley. I’m not sure if he’s definitely better than Lowe but he’s probably not worse, he can play both tackle spots and also play guard too. If he ends up being depth, he’s pretty versatile depth.

If it were up to me I would sign Daley and also David Bakhtiari or Donovan Smith, make the old guy your starting LT and Daley the backup if the old guy gets hurt.

Thank you. I wasn't being serious and just said in jest . Should have added some smileys . I knew it wasn't possible.

If this year's #1 priority is to develop Maye, then I would think that signing two LT's to one-year contracts makes a lot of sense.

Jaheim Bell shines in practice, snagging 3 Touchdowns! This is really exciting news! If Bell pans out and becomes a starter or rotation piece at tight end, he could end up the steal of this draft. This is good news! I hope Bell gets a chance to feature in the next preseason game and he continues to impress.

In the article it said that at LT he gave up 52 pressures and 12 sacks with 7 penalties. He played 15 games 508 pass black attempts.

I agree. I also think that the team believes Wallace has a chance to be an LT with some development, but if that development doesn’t look like it’s on course to pan out by the end of the year then they can prioritize the position in the draft next year, and he would still be a solid RT to replace Okorafor.
