In camp and in 2 preseason games, all of us keep saying "you know, X is really showing me something" -- where X is Kyle Love, Gerard Warren, Darryl Richard, Kade Weston, Landon Cohen, etc. The team is full to bursting with DTs, even with Brace and Deaderick on PUP. Now enter this comment from an anonymous AFC exec, per Greg Bedard:

“All of those guys, all the way down to [Landon] Cohen, [Darryl] Richard, and [Kade] Weston, will be playing somewhere in this league, I promise you that,’’ said the AFC executive. “I don’t know how they’re going to figure that out. Do you know? Because I want to get a jump on getting those guys on my team.’’
For depth, they may be in league of their own - The Boston Globe

As it happens, the Patriots hold zero 2012 draft picks after round 4. Do you see some LeKevin Smith-style trades in the future?

The NFL execs know they can just wait for cuts and if they're really bad teams they'll get a decent DL prospect for free. Only if a mid level team is desperate will they trade a late pick for a quality castoff. One can hope!

I can't remember a season ever that we have had so much discussion regarding our backup defensive lineman. We knew it was only a matter of time before the other teams picked up on them. I'm pretty sure most of the team officials scouting our players know we can't keep them all and will just play the waiting game. But your right, there may be a couple of these guys that were so impressed that they may be willing to throw a late round pick to get ahead of everyone else.

I'm pretty sure KC and Atlanta have called the bat phone already and others will look to jump the waiver line. Atlanta in particular has some players who just cannot stay healthy on their line and need the depth.

At this point, I see them keeping Wilfork, Love, Haynesworth, Pryor, Ellis, and Warren. It's hard to leave out Wright, but until he does something I can't rationalize putting him ahead of these six. I've had Wright penciled into a roster spot for far too long, and Warren was the last guy I was leaving off. Last night convinced me to make the switch.

Of Richard, Cohen, Weston, Wright, Deaderick, and Brace...

I see Richard, Cohen, and Weston as guys that could have a shot of making someone else's roster, but I don't see anyone giving up a pick for them. I think there's about a 50/50 chance any of them could make it to the practice squad vs. be claimed.

I see Deaderick, and Brace having more value as PUP insurance than the late round pick you might get for either of them IF they were to start practicing.

Just assure me that Danny Woodhead did not answer that phone...

Damn didn't know they traded away that many draft picks. Go for it!

I don't know if any of the players the Pats will release on the d-line will have much trade potential other than a conditional late round pick.

Attention...attention.....Mr President....its time to withdraw our forces.......the Patriots are killing the Bucs !!!!!

they can wait but then they won't garantee they get player X.

I think we honestly do have a bit of trade bait there for some 5th or later round picks

Just the friends of Bill list.

I'm not sure what this means.
1) He is friends with Bill Belichick or someone who knows a guy who knows a guy....
2) There is some patriots related email list called "friends of bill" that had some information on this
3) Something about alcoholics anonymous that is in the top google results and this is some sort of joke that went over my head

The way I see it, it only takes a conditional 7th to jump the line. If I were a GM worried about my DT depth, a Richard or Weston would be mighty tempting at that price.

As for Deaderick, IF he's cleared to practice he's a ready-to-go pure 5 tech, which is hard to find. And by all appearances, 5-tech depth isn't a priority for the 2012 Pats defense. But how many 2-gapping defenses are out there right now?

4.) He's listing former Pats execs who are likely to trade with the Pats because they're looking for similar things in players and they have mutual trust.

I see the bolded players making the team, unsure of what will happen with Brace and Deaderick. I'm not sure either has done enough when healthy to knock off one of the other guys. Both being injured, I don't know what you could get for them. Anderson has a shot. Weston has intriguing physical skills and made a few plays in game one, I'd like to find a way to keep him somehow. I don't know what you could get for Cohen, who was available in late December of last year and Richard who has spent one year on the practice squad and one year on IR.

Now that I'm thinking of it, is Wright guaranteed a spot? Is he healthy? I don't think he's played yet. That could open up a spot.

One of Weston, Anderson, Brace or Deaderick could also make the roster, then again Ellis, Brace and Deaderick could stay on PUP, making decisions easier.

Agreed on all points. Even without his significant injury concerns, those six are all a cut above Wright talent-wise.

What a problem to have. Seriously, last year, who would ever have thought we'd have this problem now.

But ... I think the bigger questions are:
  • What will we write on every new signing thread?
Gone are the days of the "but can he rush the passer?" drive-by postings. I'm going to miss those. I miss them already.
  • What will fill the void of the missing "Where was the pass rush" threads?
If we fail to prevent a 3rd down conversion, will we break down into arguments over who's fault it really was? Have we lost our only point of solidarity and cohesion?
  • Who do we pick on now that TBC is no longer with us and the DLine seems cured of most of these pressure woes?
Is safety to be the only refuge for our collective bile? The secondary as a whole? Dear GOD if Butler doesn't make the team we will have nowhere to turn!

Good post, and I agree Carter is the edge rusher from hell. However, I can't see us giving up Anderson under any circumstances.
