On the bottom line of the NFL Network they were presenting the top five free agents at each position. What struck my eye was safety as two former Pats showed up on the list: Patrick Chung and James Ihedigbo.

My next reaction was "wow, the safety market is pretty thin if those are the top players available".

Ihedigbo just signed with the Lions, so I guess that only leaves Chung. In all seriousness, I would sign him to a vet minimum contract for his special teams play. He has no business playing saftey! But he was a very good special teams player (minus the fakle punt call).

Steve Gregory is better than those two.

And Ihedigbo has signed with the Lions now.

they might grab a FA safety, but I expect that unless they think Tavon Wilson is going to be better they will draft a safety.

Chris Clemons is probably the best safety available. He is above average. Very good in coverage. Versatile.

It appears to me that fans don't believe a safety can be bad until he's bad for the Patriots. I suppose that's the case for all positions, but it especially applies to safeties because so many bad safeties are getting significant playing time throughout the NFL.

Is anyone really concerned about our secondary now?

I know Strong Safety is one of the teams weakness' right now but if one of your weakness' is surounded by one of the best safeties in the league and one of the best CBs in the league then it is not a big problem. Not to mention we do have a second year player who showed some skill as a rookie in Harmon.

I would put interior OL and LB at the top of our list and I would throw in TE, interior DL, and a rotation pass rusher as well. And to be clear I dont see huge needs here either mostly back up and role players.

Seeing who is currently available in free agency to play safety, I can't help but wonder if Steve Gregory will be re-signed at some point, obviously with a lower salary and cap number than he had.

Another possibility is that perhaps a guy like Kanorris Davis showed enough in practices last year that the club would be comfortable with him as the last safety on the roster. He and Nate Ebner seem to be redundant with only one or the other probably making the roster: special team aces that would typically on see the playing field on defense in case of emergency due to an injury.

Safeties currently on the roster
Age - Name - # games active - Defensive snaps - ST snaps
27 - Devin McCourty (17 games) - 1169, 90.2% - 186, 38.0%
23 - Duron Harmon (16 games) -- 429, 33.1% -- 105, 21.5%
24 - Tavon Wilson (15 games) -- 21, 1.6% --- 253, 51.7%
26 - Nate Ebner (17 games) ---- 5, 0.4% ---- 325, 66.5%
24 - Kanorris Davis (4 games) -- 0, 0.0% ----- 49, 10.0%
35 - Adrian Wilson (0 games) -- 0, 0.0% ----- 0.0.0%

- defensive snap count (1296) includes both playoff games in 2013
- total special team snaps were for regular season only (489)
- age is as of this calendar year/regular season, not today's date
- Steve Gregory appeared in 16 games and 973 snaps (75.1%)
- Gregory also had 87 ST snaps (17.8%)

Chris Price has some more on the position here:

It Is What It Is » Resetting Patriots depth chart in secondary

Duron Harmon: A key year for Harmon, who now might have the opportunity to step into the strong safety spot that was vacated by Gregory. Harmon, who just put the wraps on a pretty good rookie year, played well in spots when Gregory went down with a finger injury in 2013. It’s one thing to be a short-term fill-in, but it’s another to be a long-term starter in the league. Strong safety certainly is a position worth watching when the draft rolls around, and what the Patriots do (or don’t do) will tell you a lot about their comfort level with Harmon at this stage of his career.

Nate Ebner: A defensive back in name only (or in case of extreme emergency), the former teenage rugby star really made his bones last year as a key special teams contributor and should be an important part of the special teams unit in 2014.

Tavon Wilson: At first glance, it appears Wilson needs a good spring and summer to stick around Foxboro. The second-round pick out of Illinois in 2012 had a terrific start to his rookie year with four picks in the first half of the season. Then, he dropped off the radar screen. To be fair, some of that was due to the arrival of Talib. Talib allowed the Patriots to move McCourty to safety full time, which took most of Wilson’s playing time. But while he got consistent special teams snaps, he didn’t register much if at all as a regular contributor in 2013, leaving him a sizable question mark heading into 2014.

Adrian Wilson: The veteran technically is under contract for one more year to the Patriots, and according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, he’s expected to be ready for spring workouts. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Wilson, who went on season-ending IR with an Achillies injury at the end of last summer, could be a fascinating prospect to watch when it comes to 2014. If he’s healthy, he certainly could be in the mix to get some snaps at strong safety.

Kanorris Davis: A Troy product who spent the bulk of the 2013 season on the practice squad, he projects as a special teams contributor in 2014. But it is impressive to watch him fling his body around on kick coverage with a near reckless abandon. One guy worth watching this year.

Back to the original topic, here's a list of the veteran free agents on the market; again the age listed corresponds to how old they will be at the end of the year. With Kendrick Lewis, James Ihedigbo, Charles Woodson and Darian Stewart all signing recently, an already sparse availability of choices in free agency has now become that much more meager.

Terrific work, jmt. As has been mentioned, there's not a whole lot remaining, but I would still
love to see Chris Clemons here or, if too expensive, Major Wright looking for a rebound year.
And if he's too expensive, then I would gladly settle for Thomas DeCoud or Reed Doughty.
Any of the above would be an instant upgrade from Harmon, the Wilsons, Ebner & Kan Davis.

Thomas DeCoud is the guy I wouldn't mind seeing some rotational playing time in a Pats Uni...IIRC he was part of a potent duo in ATL with William Moore.

Major Wright, Mike Adams and Ryan Clark aren't terrible choices either....

I never really thought much of him, but Kerry Rhodes is still out there.

If the rumors are true, Goodell would be happy with the Pats if they picked him up.(personally, I think Goodell would like to pick him up.)

I don't think we're as bad off at Safety as everyone thinks we are. Sure, we don't have a hard hitting SS, but how many teams do? Adding a really good cover LB would do more for our short passing defense than a SS would.

Cousin. Both!
I would love to see the Pats Draft Florida ST. Telvin Smith. 6'3" and 218 4.52 speed. Excellent in coverage and can hit. Was an OLB. Suggested as a Safety (Rang). Fluid and can play is space. 3 ints in 2013.

B.C OLB Kevin Pierre-Louis is even faster and the Pats have chatted with him. SS is his second position. Maybe not quite as good in coverage as Smith.

After Prior and Buccanon and maybe Dixon, the SS cover is bare.

McCourty and Smith would be a great pairing. Smith can play OLB and SS.

I am a big fan of decent FA signings. You have NFL tape, not college tape. I see Wright maybe? as he is still young. Clemmons can cover but not a thumper. Maybe we seeks starter......gulp!....from the NFL Draft

The team's 2nd best safety last season was Steve Gregory. The team cut that player. The team's 2nd best safety is now a player who could barely get on the field last year, because he was nowhere near as good as even a mediocrity like Steve Gregory. We're now reading about the possibility of shifting yet another CB over to safety.

They've got a problem at safety. Pretending they don't, with "I don't think we're as bad off at Safety", doesn't magically make that problem disappear.

Sure, the second safety spot is a problem, but they should be more worried about DE/DT. We don't need to see them reach for another Tavon Wilson.

Thanks for the chiding in the bolded part. It really confirms what 95% of this forum thinks of you.

With regards to "We're now reading about the possibility of shifting yet another CB over to safety", that is all offseason boredom fluff that we read about every offseason. Using that as proof for our lack of Safeties is more illusory than me saying "I don't think we're as bad off at Safety."

Pointing out that pretending a problem doesn't exist doesn't make the problem go away "confirms what 95% of this forum thinks of" me?

I can live with that.

As for the rest, take it up with the article's author:

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Patriots defensive secondary is going to have a new look. That goes without saying with Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, eventually, manning the corner flanks.

But there’s more in store. Currently, the Pats are strongly considering a plan that would have cornerback Logan Ryan, who had five interceptions as a backup during his rookie season, play safety.

I don't see SS as a high need, because I see the SS position as more of a sub position in this defense. On passing downs, we're not going to be force fitting Harmon in when Dennard and Arrington are available.

Decoud is the guy I'd go after. He was a Pro Bowl level player in Atlanta but was slightly disappointing last year. At worst you're, what, relegating Duron Harmon to a rotational player (even if Ryan moves to safety) and getting Tavon Wilson off the roster?
