I need some clarity on this. The article says otherwise - - that if he doesn't report, Oakland can merely void the trade and get their 2011 pick back.

I'm not picking sides, just would like to know what the situation is. I'm hoping you are right and the article is wrong, but I'm not sure.

Unfortunately, it depends on something that we have no access to—the terms of the agreement itself.

This is why BB is so good. He knows when to say nothing or when to say something... that is really nothing.

Cable, if pushed about where Seymour was, should have said the trade was done and Seymour would be reporting soon. Any further questions could have been answered with "I've already reponded to the Seymour questions, does anyone have anything else?".

Bye directing it back at the Patriots (or if he directed it back at Seymour instead), he puts them in the position of having to respond and making him look like a moron.

I, personally, would have taken the 2010 2nd and 5th round picks instead of the 2011 1st rnd pick. However, there HAD to be a reason BB preferred the latter. It could be that we already have a lot of picks in the 2010 draft and he didn't want another 2010 2nd rounder that might be hard to parlay to a 2011 1st rnd pick or maybe there is some other reason that BB likes the 2011 draft better than the 2010 draft. There HAD to be a reason.

Outside of a physical, I'm not aware of any situations where a LEAGUE APPROVED trade could be voided. Can anyone name a condition (outside of a failed physical) where a LEAGUE APPROVED trade has been voided. In baseball, there are provisional trades where a team is given a time window to satisfy certain conditions...usually a new contract. But these trades are always announced as provisional along with the time window involved.

Belichick knows that once a trade is announced, the players involved are poison to your organization unless they asked for the trade to that team. There is no way...no way...that Belichick would announce a trade that had voidable conditions in it. On top of that, he would never allow the conditions to be open-ended and allow Oakland to void the trade whenever they want.

If he did in this case, he is truly losing it and needs to start thinking about his role as a GM. I don't think that is the case.

This has been mentioned before. The 2010 draft will almost certainly be conducted under the same rules as today...meaning a high 1st round pick will cost a mint. The 2011 draft has a good chance of being conducted under new rules with a slotted salary structure in place...making high 1st round picks much more reasonable.

As you mentioned, the Pats are already loaded with 4 picks in the 30-60 range for the 2010 draft. Getting another pick or two in this range would only be attractive if the 2010 draft is inordinately deep...which is a possible since Juniors should be flooding this draft, but is still a risk.

Getting Oakland's 1st in 2011 is extra attractive because a high pick should give you:
- A shot at a superior talent not otherwise available to you
- Favorable contract years (hopefully 5 or 6)
- A rookie wage scale to keep the costs reasonable

Banking on the 2011 draft is also a risk, but an educated one. A rookie wage scale benefits everyone but mega-agents and current college players...and last time I looked they didn't belong to the NFLPA. And Kraft would know as well as anyone the possibility that this would be a part of the next CBA. And assuming the Raiders will be a train wreck during the 2010 season isn't much of a stretch.

Add in the whole 3-4 vs 4-3, with the Patriots playing the contrarian card to the flow in the NFL - - thus putting themselves in a good supply position for DE's while the other teams are concentrating on two-gappers and NT's and you have a pretty good list of reasons for this trade.

Of course losing a great player like Seymour without any immediate gratification return hurts in the short-term. No one sane would argue against that fact. However, it is a very deep roster position on this team - - a fact which some don't understand (one poster incredibly compared this to trading away Moss or Brady - - as if those roster positions had any comparable depth to our DL).
