There will be lots of discussion about signing Free Agents. I predict that the only ones we will sign, are our own. There is simply little room at the Inn. What most of you don't understand about Belichick, is this. He wants Quality and Quantity. He is willing to sacrifice Ultimate Quality, for affordable, under the CAP, Quantities of Quality.

And he has proven he will blow your brains out, with it. When December and January arrive, he will play starter quality players everywhere; while you plug injury holes with exploitable scrubs. Look at his post Thanksgiving record.

The only reason that we were so concerned with "injuries" this year was that BB was in the midst of rebuilding his Defense. (While still winning!). And he lacked sufficient Quantities of Quality on Defense, to ignore the problem. But that defensive rebuilding only needs two or three more puzzle pieces, even if some here are too myopic to see that. Many seeds have been planted. Some have already bloomed, DROY, but others will too. So it will be completed this off-season, and the quality reserves will be added too, bringing the Defensive depth to his ideal.

The 2009 Team by December 2009, will be the strongest Patriots team ever fielded. That isn't a prediction. No brag, just Fact. It is as surely a fact as water running downhill.

By contrast look a the rebuilt Belichickian Offense, completed just prior to the 2007 season, and needing minimal retouching for a year or Three... Patriots lost RBs Maroney, Morris, and Jourdan; and Lawfim and Faulk stepped up. We lost Brady, and Cassel stepped up. The Offense set rushing records not seen in 30 years. And the passing game stayed near the top too. Meanwhile the Offense actually got deeper, and more balanced then the record setting 2007edition. It had even more Quantities of Quality. We found and added Jourdan, Akins, Levoir, Lawfirm, all who showed that they can contribute to a All-time, All-NFL record setting, Offense.

Who else carries 5, 100 yard RBs and a good FB? Is anyone an LT? Who cares?
Who else carries 2 starting QBs and drafts another potential starter quality reserve?
Who else carries 6 WRs and argues whether the 4th/5th WR receiver is of good enough Quality to play?
Who else carries 11 Offensive linemen and worries about depth, and whether the prime age starters will be good enough in three years? The extensive injuries to the Offense were overlooked, noted only in footnotes.

That's A Belichick team with Quantities of Quality.

I saw our 1985 and 1996 and 2001 Superbowl clubs. They were a joke by comparison, to the Juggernaut that Bill Belichick is putting finishing touches on constructing.

I have minimal concerns about the offense. we could use depth a OL.

The major concern is the defense. We need a cohesive unit so they can get back to really disguising their coverages. They also need to get back to being physical.

one of these years we should luck out with minimal injuries.

I'm also concerned on special teams on covering kicks.

In the end getting players back and adding a couple of solid pieces this team should be in good shape to make a run.

The proposal was to re-sign our own. I would also us to extend some of our own when Cassel's franchise money is available, ehich may be at the start of free agency. Your response is that you have major concern on defense. I agree that the offense is fine after adding a wide receiver prospect to push Gaffney and perhaps replace Washington, and a backup OL is fine.

In a very good draft, we will have 5 picks in the first hundred, inlcuding the comp pick. Let us presume that 4 are used for defense. The other top 100 pick is for a WR. We will have the 4th round and later to ick up the backup offensive lineman or two.

That's a top 100 corner, ILB, safety and OLB. Do you really need more rookies than that?

Let's look at it another way. Where do you find the glaring need?

DL
Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Green, Wright, Smith

OLB
Thomas, Vrabel, Woods, Crable, Redd/Colvin, rookie

ILB
Mayo, rookie, Guyton, Bruschi

CB
Hobbs, rookie, Wheatley, Wilhite, L Sanders

S
Meriweather, J. Sanders, rookie, Williams

The Patriots did not use all their rookies and players from the practice squad. I think a couple of players from the practice squad will see time next year like Bo Ruud. I also think the Patriots will trade Cassall for players/draft picks.
