I'm not sure what the motivation was to do so today, given that we are well under roster limits.
Anyone have ideas on why doing this now makes sense?
I was actually hoping that you may know
Does seem a bit odd, unless the thought was aimed at the benefit of the players? In this case though, it isn't like they are going to be getting any attention in FA, so that takes us back to square one.
IMO they are just being proactive with guys they don't think they need at the moment.

Possibly some clause in the contract related to physicals and the start of a new league year.
That's kind of where I was trying to go as well, with the thought of allowing those players the benefit of hitting the open market. Of course, as I mentioned, it's not like they are going to see any looks or interest though.
It's difficult to try and judge Belichick's feelings on whether or not they were assets to the team, or whether they were just fringe players/guys who probably weren't going to make it.
I think I'd have to side with Andy's thinking in the sense that there may be some type of clause in those specific pacts, etc. Otherwise, the timing seems to be kind of odd, to say the least.
Perhaps.
Weren't all these folks coming of the IR?
In any case, the staff has a protocol. The staff often clears the decks at this time of year.
There is no reason to keep folks that the team has decided have no future with the team. Belichick will sign lots and lots more camp fodder. Once in awhile he hits paydirt with these UDFA level players. However, UDFA players who have been away for a year with injuries are rarely worth keeping.
A thought someone had that i could possibly agree with is just getting the fringe of their roster ready come FA (depending on who else's scrubs are cut).
Also with a deep draft the UDFA class could be an interesting one especially for WR, OG and TE competition.
As to the timing i think we speculate. IMO they are just being proactive with guys they don't think they need at the moment.[/QUOTE
Five of these guys were on IR and the other two late additions to the
practice squad. Better to get fresh healthy UDFAs in a deep draft year
as you mentioned.
He had them under contract, so they were assets. Most were on the practice squad meaning they were a heart beat from a roster spot.
I don't see any football reason to do it. BB is famous for his feelings about players developing between year 1 and 2. Somewhere I feel there is a loophole being exploited.

Uf McGuffie has the skills to be Woodhead 2.0 and to be a competent backup to Vereen. Dunno why they let him go without giving him a shot in camp.
I think since the expansion of the rosters to 90 players Belichick has been carrying a lot of dead weight through the offseason. There are only so many coaches compared to players and the time spent on a player like Corey Grissom would be better on Chris Jones or Armond Armstead. In years past, he signed more players to futures contracts as well, but outside of players already in the organization, he did not sign any others.
My thinking is he is simply trying to keep a tighter camp, he has a lot of new coaches on his staff this year and probably wants to focus on the players with the best shot at making the 53 man roster, he will add camp bodies when he needs them in May and June. I could be wrong.
