See what I did there?

From Dianna Russini:

When the Patriots searched for an offensive coordinator this offseason, it came down to three names: McDaniels, then-Vikings OC Grant Udinski (who came highly recommended by Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell) and former Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown. Brown crushed his interview; multiple people in league circles told me he “blew the doors off.” But after some long conversations with trusted voices in Mike Vrabel’s orbit, New England leaned back into the familiar … and then strengthened it.

Despite interest elsewhere, Vrabel convinced Brown to join the staff as passing game coordinator, working with McDaniels every day.

I’m told McDaniels’ impact is directly seen in his ability to adjust and outsmart opponents. “Look at the halftime adjustments in Buffalo, Tennessee and Cleveland,” one league source observed. “They stand out. This past Sunday, against Cleveland’s defense, it was perimeter touches for TreVeyon Henderson that flipped the tone.”

That’s experience and understanding.

This isn’t the Brady era, the old Foxboro install. McDaniels has built a system around Maye’s mobility and off-platform ability, using his legs as a weapon.

It’s the new Patriots.

Offensive assistants Brown, Todd Downing and Doug Marrone all have their fingerprints on this creation. The Patriots didn’t just bring McDaniels back. They built a new collaborative ecosystem around him.

This is a guy to watch for the future. 39 years old. Thought he deserved his own thread.

To add a little more detail, per Wikipedia, if he had been hired as OC, it would've been his first real job in that spot. Last November he became an interim OC when the Bears fired Shane Waldron after nine games, and interim HC after they fired Matt Eberflus three games later.

I imagine that factored into the McDaniels decision.

Everyone is poachable.

Vrabel seems to be building a very deep and very collaborative coaching system. I suspect there are a lot of unsung heroes.

The deep staff also means lots of connections to players across the league, which can help in evaluation and in attracting FAs. Players notice where other players flourish.

Breaking down Patriots offensive scoring by quarter...

Q1.....Q2....Q3....Q4
49......65.....53.....30 = 190 (I removed defensive and special teams scoring -23 pts)

Note:
3rd quarter
Pats O has only scored double digits once in Q3 (21 pts vs Browns).
8 pts is highest Q3 output in other 7 games. Pats O averaging 4.6 pts in these 7 games.

4th quarter
Pats O has only scored double digits in Q4 once (10 pts vs Buff).
7 points is highest Q4 output in other 7 games. Pats O averaging 2.9 pts in these 7 games.
Pats O has not scored in Q4 in last 3 games.

Points scored against Patriots defense by quarter...

Q1....Q2.....Q3....Q4
43.....37......23.....53=146

Note:
Patriots D has given up an average 2.9 pts in Q3.
Patriots D has given up a total of 7 pts in the Q3's of their last 6 games (1.2 pts/game)
------------------------------------------
Clearly, NE is winning their games in Q2 & Q3
And this article giving props to both McDaniels & Brown is well deserved......
That being said.....
For me, the story is more about the defensive dominance and their mid-game adjustments, and recognizing many of NE's Q4's of late have been either garbage time or classic BB-esque "bend" while attempting to run the clock run down.

This is an awesome piece. I felt that we've got the best staff we've had in years.. he and dowling Will both be candidates to watch going forward.

Cowden probably has a list of coaches to replace everyone on the staff already, if necessary. These dudes are pretty buttoned up from what I understand.

The same with players. They have guys earmarked to poach of PS or claim if cut. Like John Saunders and Caleb Murphy. Instant depth replacements.

True. Also the likely scenario also Vrabel does is promote the coaching assistants as well. Those guys are prepared and ready.

The question is: is he more important than Wolf to their sustained success?

Because somebody else will make Stretch a GM if we don't.

I'm glad they went with McDaniels because he's just so damn comfortable in that "head coach of the offense" type of role but more voices and perspectives is always a good thing if they can work well together. It seems to be clicking. Brown likely leaves for an OC and eventually HC job somewhere else but with that he'll start his own coaching tree that we can potentially poach from if McDaniels ever leaves.

As far as biggest steal on the staff, probably has to be Zak Kuhr considering how he's essentially been forced into the role of DC.

Good guy to have on the bench in case McD gets froggy about HCing again.
As much as I agree, but think that ship has sailed for Josh.. he might go down in history simply as a great offensive coordinator and there is nothing wrong with that type of legacy..

This. Josh McDaniels is the OC here until he retires or gets fired (Or maybe gets the John Carroll job in 10 years or something)

???
And how many reps did these players get? I would rather have had Dippre and Swinson on the roster. At least there would havebeen a point (developmental players who can't be poached).
