you don't poke the bear

"Colts OC Pep Hamilton referenced the Patriots' 2007 "Spygate" scandal during his Wednesday presser.
A Jets assistant from 2003-05, Hamilton was asked about Gang Green's matchups with the Pats. "I do know for a fact that it was always a 60-minute chess match," Hamilton said. "It was ever-changing looks and disguises and they always tend to find ways to figure out some of your signals." It's a veiled reference, but an unmistakeable one. Between Hamilton's comments and the signing of ex-Pat Deion Branch, the Colts are signaling they want to bring the fight to the Pats instead of vice versa. "

Every team that has beaten the Patriots in the playoffs the last six years has "poked the bear" in some way or another. It's entirely overrated, and this was tame by comparison anyway.

This. I've actually noticed that the **** talking teams are the ones that usually beat us...think Giants, Ravens, Jest.

He also then went on to call Belichick one of the greatest coaches in league history and said it was an honor to play against him.

We talked about this in the game thread, but stealing signals isn't against the rules by any stretch. The only people who want this to be a veiled Spygate reference are the writers at the Indy Star and overly-sensitive Patriots fans. To me, it sounds like he was praising Belichick as a strategist - a "chess match" has a positive, not negative, connotation - and the following quip about BB being one of the best coaches in history is pretty telling.

This was weak. And sounds like he was just talking general football before he realized what he said and how the media would spin it...

In 2006, after the Colts had won the superbowl, Manning said the same basic thing. This was before spygate had broken.

The media is making this out to be more than it is...

This.

Coincidentally, we used to win a lot more championships when we did things like dance on San Diego's logo and talk trash ourselves.

The helmet catch, not the `Patriot Way,` is what made us a humble team.

Looking back at the Colt's comeback victory against KC, it reminded of last year's Ravens game. As our DBs went down from Talib to Dennard, we were as helpless as the KC Chiefs playing scrubs trying to guard Luck's receivers.

But if anything our secondary is solidifying now. The Colts are mediocre against the run and we are much better than any Pats team in a decade. The wet and windy weather will tend to negate the passing game. Both teams are depleted at Receive, But I think we are slightly better off.

The Colts arre an average rushing team and our rushing stats don't look good. But that is msileading. We were terrible after Vince and Kelly went down. It was before the FA finds were found; and settled in The Samoan Silver Surfer, Siilga is a good talent at NT, and Chris Jones is a fair talent at penetrating DT. Neither are undersized. The only other "bad" game was the trap we sprang on Manning, giving him some runs to stop his passing,

The Pass Rush is the best since the 1985 season, And it comes from across the board, on the edges and from the interior.

The Pats advance.

Other teams that talked trash: 2001 Steelers, 2001 Rams, 2003 Colts, 2003 Panthers, 2004 Titans, 2004 Steelers, 2006 Chargers, 2011 Ravens.

I remember Bruschi on the field scoffing at the Colts and their offense after the Pats held them to 3 points in the playoffs...and even Belichick dissing Fredex after the 04 Super Bowl....

But yeah - I think this whole "poking the bear" theory lost a lot of its shine with me after seeing the Jets run their mouths all week leading up to that divisional playoff game and then they clobbered us in our house....
