Think Turnovers Matter?

And strangely enough, one of those 4 losses came this yr in this Pittsburgh game.

IIRC, the only turnover all day between either team was Guyton's pick of Roethlisberger inside the PIT 20 yard line. That set up the inital TD to Branch that cut the score to 10-7 and kept them in it after a horrible first quarter.

No one else had any TO's in the game, if I remember correctly.

I agree UNLESS a safety counts as a turnover. I don't believe it does. If you recall Paulamalu punched the ball through the back of the endzone in the game's final minute.

Hmmmm, I can't recall what the other losses would be.

Certainly a team that will capitalize on other teams' mistakes. Wonder what the Pats record is in that time when it's the other way around, when the Patriots have more turnovers than their opponents? I'd bet the Patriots are a bit more resilient.

Yes, I wonder too what the Pats record is when losing the TO battle, but it can't be anything like when the Pats and Brady do win the TO battle-

101-4

Man, those numbers jump out. The implications are wide spread and of enormous impact yet we have only 4 comments while a monkey riding a dog gets page after page of replies. What has happened to us?

Excuse me, can we get back to the topic at hand (i.e. monkeys).

According to PFR, it's 24-30 when the Pats lose the TO battle.

But to put it in perspective, over the same 11-year span, the JEST are 14-50. :singing:

2002 @ Broncos lost 24-16. Won turnover battle 2-0.
2009 @ Broncos lost 20-17. Won turnover battle 2-1.
2011 @ Steelers lost 25-16. Won turnover battle 1-0.

I couldn't find a 4th game. I think included the Bengals opening day of 2001 but Tom didn't start or play. They won the turnover battle 1-0 but lost the game 23-17.

As a matter of fact, over that span, the Patriots lead the league in:

* Most games winning the TO battle
* Fewest games losing the TO battle
* Most games won while winning the TO battle
* Most games won while losing the TO battle
* Fewest games lost while losing the TO battle

Cannot find the specific information now, but believe it was Kerry Byrnes of Cold Hard Football Facts, that said something to the effect that if there was an intercepting team that team increased their chance of winning by 27%...

Looking at the Brady era (2001-present); the first set of numbers is the league as a whole, while the numbers in brackets are specific to the Pats.

0 INTs: 1496-645 (69.9%) [80-11 (87.9%)]
1 INT: 910-979 (48.2%) [37-12 (75.5%)]
2 INTs: 311-681 (31.4%) [13-11 (54.2%)]
3+ INTs: 57-469 (10.8%) [0-8 (0%)]

* Fewest games losing the TO battle
* Most games won while winning the TO battle
* Most games won while losing the TO battle
* Fewest games lost while losing the TO battle

All part of:
* Most games won when outscoring the other team
* Fewest games lost when outscoring the other team.

What is the Pats record during the Brady era when the turnovers are even?

Nice job, the Pats are +12 in turnovers..

And if you add in minimal fumbles, it becomes more significant..

17-8 (68%), 5th highest by %age; 25 is the 3rd lowest number of even-TO games (as noted above, the Pats have the most TO+ games since 2001).

Hopefully every player reads this a few times before the Pats first playoff game this year. Costly turnovers have been one of the underlying issues in their past few departures (if memory serves).

Pretty confident that BB will remind them... pretty confident he reminds them before each and every game..
