The Secondary Seems Set

It is not the tradition of this board to say "IMHO" the roster is set; that is implied. So, I don't see why the title is inappropriate. I understand that one of the Wilson's could be cut. i just think it highly unlikely. Also, for me, adding a special teamer, who happened to be the 11th DB, is irrelevant. The player is unlikely to play defensive back.

The title of this thread is incorrect for several reasons:

  • The number of DBs on the Opening Day roster could be anywhere from 9 to 11.
  • Neither Wilson has a wholly secure Opening Day job.
It might be reasonable to claim consensus that Ebner will be cut either to IR or outright (perhaps in hope of getting him to the PS). But there's widespread difference of opinion about Cole.

And by the way -- Dowling would be a fine addition to the PS if he could ever get healthy enough to practice ...

I understand that the level of certainty you were communicating was <100%. I just think it was too high.

As for "Don't count him as a DB; he's just a special teamer" -- historically, that hasn't been wholly accurate. For example, of the two guys you were specifically disregarding with that argument, Cole actually had an INT last year and a few PDs, while Ebner took snaps in the regular defense as well.

I'd keep my eye out for CB and SS cuts from teams with loaded to good secondaries, for one. I'd be look at cast-offs from the Seahawks, Niners, Bears, Texans, Bengals, and Bucs to name a few.

I understand that folks don't like Cole as a starting corner. He's not that. However, he is a very solid #4 or #5 corner. I have always emphasized his special team play because he is a special teams star. I fully expect that Cole will get reps at CB, perhaps even in Game One.

With regard to Ebner, I guess our safeties were so bad last year that he saw the field. Harmon is now the #5. He is likely to get some reps. However, I would consider much more of a defensive back prospect than Ebner ever was, or will be.

The bottom line is that all the special teamers should be considered emergency position players. Cole and Harmon are more than that. I think that Rivera is also.

BTW, I am still fine with adding a ST/DB to the 10 defensive backs. This is the kind of choice that sometimes is made at the very end of the roster.

Anyone thinking that the secondary is set doesn't know this team. In fact, I think it's a given that just about anyone from the Seahawks Secondary that gets cut will be an upgrade over the likes of Justin Green and Marquice Cole.

So Byron Maxwell, DeSean Shead, or Ron Parker? Those are probably the 3 guys that would get cut.

Don't see them cutting Lane, Simon or Thurmond.

You people worried about the secondary do realize Brady and Belichick got the #1 seed and within a catch of winning a SB with Matthew Slater, Julian Edelman, Patrick Chung, Sergio Brown, James Ihedigbo, Sterling Moore, Nate Jones, Phillip Adams, Antwuan Molden, Josh Barrett, and Leigh Bodden all seeing playing time, right?

Slater played 8% and Edelman played 9% of the defensive snaps. While everyone listed above played at least 16%.

Ihedigbo played 68% and Chung played 57%, which were the two highest out of the players above.

Not saying it will happen again, i'm just saying it could be a whole lot worse.

This is a good post. People should read it again. Whatever expectations you might have about this secondary, either high or low, it is INFINITELY better than the one we went to the superbowl with in 2011 and significantly better than the one we played with last year.

Remember last year saw this defense managed to help get us a bye with 3 rookies getting starters snaps(Jones, Hightower, and Dennard) and another seeing significant action (TWilson)

The Secondary should be improved with Talib having a full off season in the system. Gregory getting a 2nd year in the system. McCourty having a full year at S, and Dennard making a 2nd year leap

And don't forget this improved 2ndary is linked to the best LB corps since the superbowl years, and a DL with more potential than we've seen since Richard Seymour was here. Right now the only real concerns I have is DT and CB depth.

It may not be perfect or "the best", by any means, but we've come LONG way from how we ended 2011 as shown above.

Baltimore won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer as the QB, too. So what?

I think our Secondary has the potential to be middle of the pack in yardage if our DL is healthy and takes the steps forward we think it should (Chandler Jones progressing, Tommy Kelly instead of Love/Deaderick).

I think this year will be the year that the rest of world sees how ridiculously good Devin McCourty is at Safety.

Once again you complete miss the point of what was being said. The fact that you brought up baltimore and dilfer clearly shows that.

I didn't miss the point at all. It was just a really lousy point. And Dilfer works just fine to demonstrate that.

No, arguably the best defense in the history of football + a serviceable QB that actually played very well in the superbowl does not demonstrate your point at all.

The Patriots defense that year was pretty friggin far from servicable, and the Patriots offense sputtered against the Giants.....in the Ravens-Giants superbowl both units shined.

Marquise Cole is Not a "very solid" #4/5 CB...at all.
