The draft is primarily for the future. Well, there are many possible losses in the secondary in 2020: McCourty, Chung, McCourty and Jones. Even the likelihood of losing two would make this a serious priority this year.

Good post. This could be the last year with this current group. Looking forward to seeing how J.C. Jackson builds on from last year. Also, I will be on the lookout for Duke Dawson.

I hope Melifonwu breaks into the starting rotation by next year. I also hope that we draft Thornhill. Mostly because their first names together are pretty great. ;)

This team has been incredibly fortunate with stability provided by McCourty and Chung. Most teams are on a 2-year plan for every secondary position at all times.

I'm not really looking into 2020 much yet but for this year the secondary could be THE reason the Pats win possibly another Super Bowl. QB Play and elite coverage win titles.

One year at a time but planning for the future is a must. Good thread.

I think you can pencil Jackson in as a replacement for J-Mac and Dawson as a replacement for Jones or D-Mac (with Harmon taking the single high role). And whilst it’s not one I’m expecting yet, if Obi can step into Chung’s Role, all the better. And of course, Crossen may step up in year two. I’m not too worried about the future of the secondary.

Plus if dmc doesn’t return after this season thats a major allotment of cap to use on another safety if any are available. We have quite a bit of space opening up for next offseason , which will go down a bit if Brady/van noy/ jones/etc are brought back but should still leave plenty especially if dmc isn’t extended.

I think Obi is a free safety, I don’t believe he’s a banger, but he’s got great range. I don’t think they are going there but safety and corner look like great value at #32. I would trade back if that were the best option but there are a number of 2nd day safeties who they might be looking at.

Chung ain't going nowhere so likelyhood shrinks a bit.

Considering that this is a weak (but deep) safety class and most of them except Taylor Rapp are mocked around 2nd/3rd round I don't mind if we take ex. Nasir Adderley somewhere there. Good thing we have so many Day 2 and 3 picks that we can plan ahead.

There’s some excellent round two safeties but I do think the Chung extension reduces the likelihood of them taking a safety early. There are only two CBS that interest me early. Joejuan Williams, who we’ve had in for a visit, could fulfill a Brandon Browner function on the team and David Long is an excellent press corner with Patriot-like athletic traits. I could see him being on our board.

We’re going to have hall of fame corners on both sides. Gilmore is a true shut down corner. I noticed that people had ill luck throwing it on that side. Next year, there will not be s side you can easily throw to.

Is it revis island? No, but sort of. Without the bikini atoll radiation

Does everyone remember the days of Tiquan and two way Troy?? BB has come a long way from what appeared to have been undervaluing the secondary to a more balanced approach.. the impact on this team is obvious.

No matter what this team loses, the hunt for very good secondary players who can play in this system will continue..

I didn’t realize Chung had been extended, and after another serious injury in the SB I started thing about his replacement. I obviously want offense in this draft, but I really like Rapp, especially if he is there in the 2nd.

Rapp is excellent and I had him pencilled in as an excellent Chung replacement but he lacks the speed (4.7) to be allowed to be too far from the LoS and therefore the Chung signing makes him possibly redundant. Juan Thornhill is one that really interests me. Byron Jones like athleticism and has the flexibility of playing corner or duplicating the McCourty role of slot safety/single high safety. With Chung re-signed, Thornhill seems to be the best bet to be drafted as a safety for me. There's Chauncey Gardner-Johnson too but he might be a little too similar to Duke Daswon for my liking.
