The Official Vrabel vs Ben Johnson Discussion Thread

Breer is calling out nothing new. I get his point. Sadly, this is the process.

I think he is implying adding the facade of "sprinkling" the interviews with men of color throughout the due- diligence process rather than have them take place early. Whatever.

Now these gentlemen have every right to decline the interview they are being offered is a sham.
I don't get Breer's whining on how many candidates are in, and whether or not certain guys are first or not. If someone is available, get them in. Vrabel should go 6th with Johnson 13th? That's dumb. Get the guys you want in first. If they don't wow you, then move to 3rd and 4th. The 4th and 5th place guys are available before the 3rd? BFD.

There's no guarantee Johnson is going to be a great HC. While there's no guarantee on Vrabel, either, he does have a track record with varying degrees of success, including a coach of the year award. In the end, it comes down to who the players are on the roster.

Someone once said "Players play. It's a player's game." Don't remember who it was.

I'm calling it now, Patriots will announce Vrabel as HC by Friday morning. It might even be leaked Thursday night. Get ready for Vrabel to be HC. Any of you against hiring Vrabel, you better prepare because he will be the HC of the New England Patriots.

Ultimately this teams needs a culture setter and leader and I know Vrabel can be that. That is where my question with Johnson lies. Hes a genius OC but I think I value the other stuff more. I would be shocked if the Krafts hired another rookie HC right after Mayo so it'll probably be Vrabel.

Vrabel did well with average rosters (nobody at quarterback) going 54-45 making the playoffs in three of his six seasons, four of which had winning records. He was NFL Coach of the Year just three seasons ago. Ben Johnson has ONLY THREE YEARS EXPERIENCE AS A COORDINATOR! He is an unknown commodity beyond that re. running an entire program, let alone one in full-blown rebuild mode. Right -- "let's keep expectations in order here." Put down your Madden controller and step away from the shiny new toy with a fragile disposition that just might go haywire at the drop of a hat.
Johnson also has arguably the best roster in the NFL. Just obscene talent on the Oline and at almost every skill position on offense. Im not holding that against him because someone could easily underperform with good talent but I think it's important contextually.

Breer is a whiny punk who makes his living by kissing ass.

I like his info but there is no way i'd want to listen to/hang with him over a beer longer than 2 minutes.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the Pats fix the personnel side of the organization. That's a big "if." But if they do, then Vrabel returns them to relevancy and perhaps makes them a more or less regular playoff team with maybe even one SB appearance in 5-7 years. Solid.

Johnson gives them a shot at having a transcendent, unstoppable offense with Drake Maye at the help. An offense so good that a few deficiencies in the defense are not as critical. And that means he gives them a shot at winning SBs in bunches. There's more risk picking Johnson, but more reward too.

Still, it's a bit funny that the Rooney Rule has turned in to a humiliation ritual for black coaches, which I'm sure wasn't what the NFL had in mind. But they are all afraid to end it because they'll be accused of racism.

I used to work for E2G Sports. My friend who started it has connections and sources. I was just told that Vrabel and Pats had a deal in place since last Tuesday. Last Tuesday, Jonathan and Vrabel had a dinner meeting. The deal is done, Vrabel will be the HC. As for people that will come with him, here are the names I am hearing:

Terrell Williams
Tim Kelly
Tommy Rees
Ryan Cowden(GM?)
Tom Quinn
Roman Phifer

I have been reading about Vrabel and his time in Tenesse, and most of it is good. Sounds like a Campbell-type, focusing on fundamentals on the technical side. but prioritizing motivation, accountability and self-progress as drivers.

Then looking at his numbers, his best year defensively was his first, by far, then he declined considering before platoo-ing in mediocrity. for Offense, he peaked in 2020 (which really was a team with skill position 3 stars, since they only really had 1 great lineman for the 4th best offense - and Fitzmagick). It worries me that he couldn't make his defense at least decent to keep up with the offense.

While I know that behind the scenes the Titans were meddling more than than they should, it also seems like he was a bit of stubborn while receiving stuff from outside, and this includes Data Analytics. This is a yellow flag to me, because I like old-school type mentality but I do not like old school lethargy. Unfortunately analytics is part of football, great coaches will use them, and more so from now on.

I would be happy with Vrabel, as long as he brings some new blood, into the staff, and not his old time "pals". Get an OC with some analytics affinity, and an DC who can contribute somewhat meaningfully to running the defense (so not a figure-head), and I think this is a strong coaching staff. Also, priority is keeping Maye's development at full speed.

Hmmm. Keeping an eye on this post

Mike Vrabel is a favorite of mine but: Ben Johnson brings that OC aspect which I crave.

The amount of crying about needing an offensive coach has gotten out of hand.

Josh Allen has a defensive head coach, he's had 3 or 4 OCs.

Lamar has a former special teams coordinator as head coach.

These are your two MVPs this year

Hello Patsfans do you all see that post above ^?? Thanks KDP.

Plus Vrabel was HC when TN scored 30ppg. It's not hes a detriment to the offense

To be fair 2 of Vrabels OCs did become Head Coaches, so if nothing else he can find good coordinators. Arthur Smith and Matt Lafleur

Not only does he have to do it again, but he has to do a better job of keeping the positions behind the OC stocked for an easier transition.....brain drain is real
