The official Patriots vs Lions's pre-season game thread

Instead of creating a thread, I'm just going to vent here (take it or leave it). The refs set the tone on this game and the Pats never recovered like a good team should:

Ocho PI - 85 gets nailed (5 yards past LOS). Is on his butt, but still gets called for the penalty
Arrington PI - not PI. within 5 yards of the LOS. If you think it was then how about that time Woodhead got hit before the ball got there 1 yard past the LOS?
Welker crackback - he hit his lower leg, but a crack back involves 2 blockers. Welker was the first guy to touch him
Slater going out of bounds - Why can't the kicking team go out of bounds on their own? Isn't that like taking players off the field which is beneficial to the return team?
Non-call: Suh punching Mankins in the face. Refs: He deserved it for the facemask? I really don't know what else it could be. The league should fine him for this.

Anyone notice CBS stopped replaying the refs bad mistakes after Ocho's horrible call.

I like Detriot's energy, but it's amazing what they can get away with compared to the nitpicking that goes on in Foxboro.

How is that a BS excuse? The Lions came out sharp and the Patriots came out flat. That should be obvious to anyone who watched the game.

That is a BS excuse. If you have it in you, even if you come out flat, you switch to the higher gear when you are down. The pats simply couldn't turn it on because the higher gear was simply not there. They were outmatched physically.

That's a BS excuse. Detroit dominated our o-line and that's where it all fell apart

It is an excuse as a fan, but also a possibility. The only one who knows the truth is in Detroit right now.

First exhibition season game you've ever watched?

They came out flat. Every team has off days (see last year against the Cleveland Browns). "Getting beat physically" is symptomatic of a flat team, especially a team like this iteration of the Patriots.

It has nothing to do with the teams' respective talent, and I have no doubt that if they were playing in the regular season, the Patriots would win 9 out of 10 times.

Football is a game of momentum and all the momentum was with the Lions. The Pats were flat and the effort wasn't there, but the Lions were dominant and took the Pats out of their game.

Can't really like this, but I agree.

Great list. This annoyed me as well. One thing I'd note is that it is a cut block that involved two players. I don't know the exact qualifiers, but Welker can't go below the knees in that situation.

Suh's punch really pissed me off. And then what took that to another level is when the Lions fans that I told about it said that I'm just jealous. When was the last time anyone was jealous of the Lions in game that counted?

um, the pats were not trying in this game at all.

Suh: "We wanted to get back to where we were last THANKSGIVING. Earn respect and getting them to FEAR us."

When you play a game, exhibition or no exhibition, you play like you mean it. I guess I just have higher expectations than you. Even BB sounds like he is about to cry.

I wouldn't call that higher; I'd call that unrealistic.

It worked. Im scared **** of him. That dude is a ******* ANIMAL.

Which one of Connolly/Wendell/Ohrnberger is playing as well as those starters on the three Super Bowl teams?

I merely said, the Patriots got backups and starters for nothing back then. This team has invested more than double on the O Line relative to other positions, so you need to decide even more cap savings from other positions.

Ask BB and Scharneccia how they did it with almost no investment, i did not build any of those championship teams.

My thought is they let them play and stink it up until they improved. Salary cap is unforgiving, overload at one position, including backups, strip another.

Detroit is an up and coming team and they had their way with the Pats tonight, but I'm not sure how many teams are going to fear them.

You should listen to what Tom Brady had to say about the game in the press conference.

You mean he sounded more or less like he does every time the Patriots lose?

You don't say.

And that was just the first 20 minutes! I hate to be that guy who blames something other then the Patriots play for their poor performance. The Pats got some calls their way, but the refs were just awful all around. It would be nice to not have this crew in the regular season during a meaningful game.

If I'm any high-level official for the Patriots, I want an explanation from the league on that call on Ochocinco. That was horrendous.
