This was to be the most imp pick in the Belichick era, and its not the best choice... terrible pick, not the player, but where they picked him... Im stunned right now..

If this player turns out to be what is expected, a 1st round caliber player at one of the most important positions on the field, and one of the positions we have been the worst at, it may be the best pick of the BB era.
Although I have no clue why you think it is the most important pick of the BB era. Its a 1st round draft choice, like about 10 others he has had.

Tomorrow is a new draft. There are 9 passrushers available. 2 quarterbackers figure to be near the top. We have picks 12, 15 and 21 in the 2nd, and the 26th pick in the 3rd.

Bingo.....

You dont draft certain players because of what other teams do.

Didn't EVERYONE on here bash Wilhite and Wheatley all last season? So now we are trying to correct the problem and now BB gets bashed again. Good God. It's a WR's league, and we just took a step towards slowing down some WR's.

People are never happy. Yes, I wanted someone else also. But this pick makes sense.

Still need to draft on the D-Line and OLB but I had CB as a pretty big need for three reasons.

1) Fins and Jets improved their respective passing games
2) Whilhite and Wheatley are at best marginal CBs
3) Good cover guys help the pass rushWe have a BINGO!

In today's NFL a better approach (unless you have a Revis) is - a good pash rush helps the cover guys.

McCurty will give Wilhite competition. Nickel has as many reps as Wilfork or Warren. McCurty will be our dime back instead of Springs.

Its not about the player, its a need... We need pass rushers and playmakers... sorry but this is not going to help right away...

You know what's funny about all of you guys whining about this pick? It's that in the end, all it comes down to is whether or not the guy is good. And we have no idea about that right now. I remember how psyched everyone was when we picked Maroney, because everyone had heard of Maroney. And how bummed people were when we picked Mankins, because nobody had heard of Mankins. People were psyched about Brace, bummed about Vollmer. And so on.

The Patriots really only had two reliable corners, Bodden and Butler. They also were terrible both on special teams coverage and on special teams returns. If I'm not mistaken the Pats were last in the league in kickoff returns. If the kid is a good returner and a good corner, it's a good pick. If he's not, it's not. It's that simple. Almost all the draft sites had him in the 20-40 range. It's not a crazy pick.

The first round is all about getting a guy who is going to be on the field a lot for you. A guy who is a major contributor both on defense and on special teams is worth a first round pick. If he's good. But you don't know if he's good, do you? None of us do.

Good post. Must admit I was a little shocked by the pick and po'd. But looking at his college production he seems like a good fit. They threw at this guy a ton and he had a lot of success. 187 times with only 42 completions to show for it. Seems like he is able to play them close and jam them up pretty good too, based on his 9.0 ypc rate. Rated as the best specials teams player in the draft. I'm almost mad at myself for getting upset about this pick. I think he is going to work out great for us and improve this team tremendously. As much nickel and dime that we we play he is and added bonus. Welcome McCourty.

However, I'm in agreeance that we definately need pass rush help and a WR on day 2 right away.

Wow this board is very depressed. I don't know what to say to you guys.

I'm of the opinion that it just shows us how dumb the 'experts' and we are when it comes to the draft. Look at the first round and there are many players that most predicted would go in the second at the earliest.

Looking forward to more surprised tomorrow.

So lots of people hating the McCourty pick but from the sounds of it this kid epitomizes a Patriot. He does it all. Returns kicks, blocks kicks, toughness, hard worker, quickness, run support, instincts, press coverage, good hands, etc...

The ONLY knock on the kid seems to be he needs to add a little muscle to shed some of the bigger receivers... and people are PISSED?
Well said.
I don't get it either, emoney.

Ambivalent on Odrick, wouldn't have minded Bryant.

What's your point?

The guy didn't like passing up on Odrick and Bryant (I didn't care much for Bryant personally, wanted Tate in the second round) and you called it the worst post ever. I was just wondering why considering that I knew for a fact that you were high on at least one of those guys.

Apparently even McCourty thought he was a reach:

Your NFL dream comes true, and where are you? In the bathroom. That's where McCourty was when Belichick called to tell him he was #27

In today's NFL a better approach (unless you have a Revis) is - a good pash rush helps the cover guys.

If you gave me a choice, I would certainly choose a pass rush over a great cover guy. But IMO you still need both.

Erm, yes you do. You react to other teams.

And aren't you the one shaking and trembling about upgrading the pass rush?

To a certain extent you might, but you react to your team first and fix the weaknesses when you can starting with the biggest ones. Id put WR and a pass rusher whether it be a DE or an OLB ahead of corner.

Concerned like most Patriot fans should be yes, shaking and trembling no, I dont revolve my life around what the Patriots do and dont do.

just listen to yourself. whilthite and wheatley sucked last year, in part because they are young. so you draft another cb who will take 2 years to develop? it IS a wide receivers league - that's why we needed another WR like bryant. mossy is gone after this season because I guarantee you the pats won't pony up and pay him what he wants. then we are stuck with welker and tate and WR. Bryant was a potential randy moss replacement. If you don't get a pass rush, then get a playmaker on offense.

I'm not real thrilled.

No but he better turn out to be a baller when you pass up people like Bryant or Ordick.

You dont seem to recogize that Bill Belichick would not have passed up 'people like McCourty' to get those guys.
Bill Belichick say McCourty is a better Patriot that Odrick or Bryant.
You are offended that he could possibly be so ignorant as to disagree with your ratings.
One thing is for certain. 100 times out of 100 I will take BBs side on talent evaluation over yours, and that doesnt count that he ACTUALLY DID THE WORK IN EVALUATING THE PLAYER WHILE YOU READ WHAT SOME PEOPLE WROTE.

not really....this pick doesn't make much sense at all given the pats are supposedly set at starting CB with butler and bodden

he will not make a difference in the pats pass defense for a couple of years......

but hey.....there's always special teams

Some of you guys crack me up. The odds of us picking up a good passrusher are quite good.

Most of you guys forget that there is an intelligence component to all of this, and if you don't think that BB has a pretty damned good idea of how others are picking, you're out of your mind. The guy is an intelligence freak. He's got to have as much as he can. That's why he trades down more than others; because he has the intelligence and knows what other guys want and a very good idea of how they're going to pick. Clausen and McCoy are likely to go early in the 2nd, along with a few others, leaving a buffet of passrushers for the Pats to pick up in the 2nd round.

Some of you should step away from the ledge. Some of you others should do a cannonball.
