Butler played 67 snaps, was targeted 7 times, and allowed 2 receptions. Andre Roberts is in no way a mediocre WR and he had 0 receptions on the night. Aldrick Robinson is one of the fastest WRs in the NFL and Butler kept up with him. Meanwhile, Ryan was busy getting beat by him.

Ex players & the media thought he played great. From a national standpoint, Riddick's main takeaway from the game was Butler as well.

He did a great job not being targeted on this 41 running plays

Excellent find, Andy. Way too often people are making assessments based on comments from "sources" that are from the likes of Jack Flagler. I always have to smile when people are swayed by a comment from Mike Reiss. Mike is the premier beat reporter covering the Pats, but when he strays into analysis and player evaluation you have to take it with a grain of salt. What I want to hear from Mike is when he starts his evaluations with, "my sources within the organization have been telling me that...... " I turn him off when it starts, "I think....."

When a former coach, or even certain players make evaluations they have some credibility (depending on the coach or player of course). But I can never understand why anyone would get excited or depressed based on anything a media puke might opine. BTW- The only mediot I would exclude from from this assessment is Field Yates, who was a former NFL scout.

I agree on Reiss, except for the puke part. He does an admirable job of presenting credible information from sources. Other than that, he's on a par with the rest of the sensationalists. Pat Kirwan and a few others offer opinions worth noting IMO.

It has been a topic of conversation on this board this summer that his 40 times were awful for a corner.

Please give me something to change my opinion.

Please explain exactly what I am wrong about and which statements are incorrect?

He's slow in the same way that Anquan Boldin, Keenan Allen, and Jerry Rice are slow.

And it's still up in the air if Mayo's absence is even injury related. I don't think it was reported that he left any practice early with an apparent injury.

You compared him to those players. They deserve that comment because they proved it in the field. Butler hasn't even proved it in division 1

Most of his pro day numbers suck. I wonder if there was something up with him that hindered his pro day performance.

Fans are strange ducks. They obsess in finding a great reserve TE behind Gronk, but nary a peep do they make, regarding the reserve for McCourty at S1.

No one thinks for a second, or even proposes that the likely reserve S1 is likely Logan Ryan. All the other candidates resemble in size, or speed or degree to a SS. Only Ryan looks like, is built like, or has the wheels of a FS resembling Devin.The only other possibility is A

I think we tend to overvalue injury history -- assuming that players who have been injured in the past will be injured again, and that players who have been healthy will stay healthy. So McCourty is not perceived as an injury "risk," even though being an NFL DB is pretty much the definition of injury risk.

You seem to not really understand this.

Compared to corners Butler is slow. He is also short.

Being short is not something that prevents him from being a corner, but it is certainly something that makes it more difficult.

Butler's speed is an issue. Of course slower corners have been successful, but how in the world you are comparing him to Ty Law at this point is beyond comprehension to me.
Butler seems to have questionable size, speed, and experience to make it as an NFL corner. People got all excited because he looked OK DUE TO the surprise that he actually could.

For him to make it as an NFL corner and overcome the speed and size issues, he will have to have excellent skills, and its silly to assume he has proven that yet.

I don't know why you feel compelled to act as if his weaknesses do not exist.
