Re: Breer:The market for cassel

If your a team in the market for a QB, why the hell wouldn't you place a call to the Patriots the minute FA starts to at least communicate your level of interest in Cassel.

Agreed.

Makes me think that these GMs aren't very thorough or narrowminded in their idea of how to solve their problems. More GMs need to read Ron Wolf's book, The Packer Way.

Re: Breer:The market for cassel

That deal could have been in the works months ago when Pioli first left. No one really knows...

The non-Chiefs market for Cassel -- Broncos/Bucs 3-way trade? [mergedx3]

The Denver Post is reporting that Tampa Bay tried to pull off a three-way trade:

NE gets Tampa Bay's first
DEN(!) gets Matt Cassel
TB gets Jay Cutler(!)

And this is not good news for McDaniels.

Even without serious competition from a backup, the Broncos had themselves a quarterback controversy Friday.

Jay Cutler, the Broncos' starting quarterback, the franchise, the one player who carried all hope for a greater future, believes his days with the team are numbered — even after a proposed deal that would have sent him to Tampa Bay and Matt Cassel to Denver never materialized.

Re: Breer:The market for cassel

What would you have done differently?

I'm an out of the box thinker and work for a think tank.. I'm pretty sure I would have

unecessary controversary really...i dont think the broncos intiated the deal . people called McD because of his relationship with cassel and the declined.just uncessary IMO

Re: Breaking: Tampa Bay WAS a player for Cassel (sort of)

McDaniels mistake was that he entertained the thought of getting cassel when he already has a probowl QB in Cutler. Josh cant afford to piss off the face of the franchise this early come on

As I said, Tampa Bay tried to initiate the deal, not Denver.

Re: Breaking: Tampa Bay WAS a player for Cassel (sort of)

No big deal really. Atleast Denver fans might be stirred up by this. The media will probably run with this and twist and turn it any way they will.

I agree with you. After today, Josh is the odd man out.

And despite the rocket arm, Cutler is trash from what I've seen. Denver fans will be skewering Josh for even entertaining the notion that Cassel might be better.

Re: The non-Chiefs market for Cassel -- Broncos/Bucs 3-way trade? [mergedx3]

Why didn't Tampa just offer up a first for Cassel straight up?

If we ever needed to be reminded how sensitive and thin-skinned professional athletes are, this piece is exhibit #1. No one likes to think that they're replaceable, but this guy (Cutler) needs a dose of the real world.

Good question. My guess is that they preferred Cutler. But imo, Cassel will be the better QB. Cutler has shown some questionable decision making skills despite his powerful arm. We saw what Cassel could do last year and decision making is not his problem. He has an above average arm and very good accuracy as well.

McDaniels and Pioli have the advantage of knowing all about Cassel, that's got to make a difference. Plus cutler has more College and Pro experience for tampa to judge.

Why is that a mistake?

Belichick knew early on that Bledsoe was not the right guy.

If I were McDaniels, I wouldn't advise trading Cassel for Cutler straight up. But if Tampa was willing to give me 2 #1s for Cutler (a good QB is worth AT LEAST that) I would definitely consider it if Cassel was a part of the package.

Cutler said this:
If Cutler is not traded, and he stays with the Broncos, can his situation be mended? Cutler took a long pause before answering.

"Anything can be mended," he said. "I'll always play with the guys we've got. I love playing for those guys. Obviously, Josh and I's relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don't play for the coaches anyway, I play for teammates. As long as we keep the guys we've got I'll go out there and play. I love those guys."

Cutler said he had spoken with teammates Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokley, Tony Scheffler and Casey Wiegmann, among others, about his trade.

"I know they love playing for me and I love playing for them," Cutler said. "There's going to be a lot of problems if they try to trade me. Well, they've already tried to trade me, but if they trade me for sure."

LOL, I would not want that guy on my team. Frankly, Denver is the enemy, and I love watching this kind of turmoil. This guy is worse than Favre.

Good luck Josh. This is the kind of crap that made me wonder if McDaniels was ready to be a head coach.

I'm not saying he isn't, hell he has the job, but his major contribution was as an x and O guy, not one in charge of a personnel group.

Could be a blessing in disguise. If he calms down the whiny Cutler he gets instant credibility.

I thought Romeo got over the hump by laying down the law to Winslow, but he couldn't get past a bad relationship with Savage.

This will never go right for McDaniels. If he keeps everyone happy, it means players do not fear him. And he's not going to win with players like this anyway. I couldn't be happier that Denver is melting down. I hate the Broncos and their fans.

everyone is complaining that the patriots got scammed. If we all think this , isnt BB also just smart enough to think that its less compensatation and he still willingly got scammed ? there is more to it than meets the eye.

Do you think he gets away without dealing with a situation like this? Handling personnel dwarfs other phases of coaching. He might as well jump right in.

Every great coach has had to deal with a major personnel issue with an upset player. It sets the tone for the whole team.

BB not handling the QB situation in Cleveland well soured his reign. He did the right thing and Kosar was way overrated by fans, but still...handling that would have changed his rep.

On the other hand, he totally ignored Terry Glenn by using him until he couldn't anymore, then dumping him, showing no distraction.

Set the no bull tone for that team IMO.

as the dust settles, the more i think about it this is belichick saying eff you to the rest of the league.

he's taking care of matt by putting him in a situation where he will have a very good chance of succeeding. he's taking care of Vrabes by enabling him to end his career in an organization run by someone he knows and trusts. he's taking care of the pats by clearing the cap room and getting more out of the guy who was just #16 on the roster a year ago than anyone would ever have imagined.

the move makes belichick bigger than life and bigger than the league. he's saying, i make my own rules....it's my world and you all just live in it.

As the great Prince Machiavelli said about leadership hundreds of years ago, "being loved is preferable to being feared, but given the choice, I choose to be feared." He was right and so are you.
