The Next Group - Red Chip Players

MY PERSONAL CONCLUSION (with the top 3 gone) is
that Vrabel may be willing to trade down, but not if he has one of the players considerably above the rest. If he has 4 about equal, then he can afford to trade down to as far as 7, especially if he thinks that one or two of his 4 aren't a top consideration for others. My SUSPICION is that Campbell is his man and will be drafted at 4. For me, I have Campbell and Banks at the top of my list.

THOUGHTS
I tend to think of the first 40 as blue chip, red chip and the rest that aren't really all that far apart in value. Obviously, where the break is changes from year to year. I would think that we want to be sure that we get a red chip player that is near the top our board. And yes, QB's get moved up since there is tremendous value for just being a QB who can start.

BLUE CHIP (3)
Hunter, Carter, Ward

RED CHIP (8) (in no particular order) [teams and posters will have a slightly different list)
Campbell
Banks
Sanders
Membou
Tet
Jeanty
Warren
Graham

If a team wants to get one of these, they can't go lower than 11. If they have a couple much higher than the others, then they should be willing to trade up to get him. Also, if one is trading down, a team can't trade beyond where they are very likely to get one of the top players on their board.
I would question Ward being a blue chip, personally.

For me it's not just that we have several players already but that they are also pretty light themselves. Barmore, Milton, and White aren't Wilfork or even Ty Warren.

This is clearly intentional as we switch from a 3 man line to a 4 man line. But that that doesn't mean everyone should be 290 or less.

All that said I wouldn't hate a 4 man line with Milton, White, Barmore, and Graham. Could turn into a real wrecking crew. The question becomes who are the DTs and who are the ends? Also kind of limits Landry a little as I wouldn't really want to take any of them off the field other than for a quick breather.

I agree. I would be fine with a Graham pick as well. They have to always treat Barmore as though they are going to lose him, and Graham’s play makes him a blue chip player regardless of arm length. Taking him would not only provide insurance for Barmore, but it would give them more rotation ability on the line. Overall there are a number of players and scenarios for the #4 pick that I would be completely fine with:

1) Travis Hunter - He would immediately upgrade their receiving corps significantly, and adds insurance at CB.

2) Abdul Carter - I think Vrabel’s defense is going to be predicated on getting pressure and turning the ball over. Carter would give them one of the nastiest pass rushes in football, with pressure coming from everywhere.

3) Armand Membou - Only 20 years old, massive, nasty, and one of the best athletes to ever come out at tackle. I don’t have any doubt they can make him a fixture at Left Tackle.

4) Mason Graham - Forget the arm length, just look at his performance in college. Started as an 18 year old and held his own plus throughout his career at Michigan. Would give them a great rotation at DT and serious insurance if Barmore goes down again.

5) Trade Down - If a team like Chicago is willing to give them their #39 pick to move up and swap 1st round picks #10 for #4 then I would certainly consider it. They could still get one of the top tackles ( Campbell, Banks, Zabel, Simmons) at #10, and have the picks to move up into the first to either take a WR, DT, or double dip at OT.

6) Will Campbell - I think Campbell is going to be a really good player, but I would rather trade down and try to get him at 10.

7) Ashton Jeanty RB People here would howl in anger, but if they can’t get a good trade down then go back to best player available. They may have Jeanty at the top of the BPA list, and Vrabel definitely wants to run the ball.

8) Ty Warren TE Another pick many would hate, but he’s a really good player, and he could become Maye’s top target for years to come if he ended up in Foxborough.

After this point there aren’t any players that I would be happy with at the #4 pick. But if they went with any of the above I would be fine with it. You can’t always get what you want, so you have to make the best of what you can do.
