The FA, "sign the beast" thread

I stopped reading after that last one.

I'm not as opposed as you about keeping ONE of Connelly/Wendell, as long as we also address it with younger talent as well.

Either way, we really should attempt to upgrade the position as a starter though. That could be done by either bringing in someone else to play center, or keeping Connelly at a lesser charge and moving him there.

If Belichick decides to keep Wendell, hopefully it will be cheap and for a backup role. I'm not opposed to seeing him there where he still may have sufficient value to our team (in my opinion). The issue will be whether or not someone wants to pay him starter's money, and if they do--good luck to him.

You're probably right. But the Pats spent elite money on a guard, so I dont think you can say there is no way they would do it.

The spent "ELITE" money on an O-lineman who has shown the versatility to play LG or LT. And, during an interview with BB last year, he mentioned that Mankins had also taken snaps in practice at CENTER..

Allen strikes me as another one of those vet signings we get just a year or two too late (see: A. Wilson).

Jared Allen is known for being a "Locker-room Lawyer". Do you really think that's the type of guy the Pats would bring in?

I count your total wish list at $25M (not counting any savings for cutting anyone). Let us presume that you don't get your DT. The total is then a very manageable $21M. Adding a WR or SS would mean taking the money from another position.

DEFENSIVE TAÇKLE
We have Wilfork, Kelly, Armstead, Siliga, Jones plus a draft pick (plus Vellano and Grissom). I don't see spending an additional $4M unless Wilfork or Kelly goes in which case the money would be there for the replacement. Pats also have Marcus Forston and Sopoaga for now

WIDE RECEIVER
You seem fine with counting on all of Amendola, Dobson, Thompkins and Boyce. I think that it is likely that we would sign a free agent or two (a midlevel plus Collie).

SAFETY
Counting on Harmon AND Wilson AND Wilson somehow seems insufficient.

THE REST
I'm fine with the wish list for those on other teams with regard to position. I suspect the names could be different.

I'd like to see Sam Shields over Talib.

I'd like to see Jon Asamoah at G, provided he checks out.

Say NO to re-signing Wendell. Just NO. Bring in 2 rookies if you have to, but re-signing Wendell is the easiest way to get Brady hurt. Sign Evan Dietrich-Smith if you're going to sign someone.

For DT, I'd love to see one of Joseph, Houston, Carrington, or Jones signed. Red Bryant, would be a stop gap consolation prize and force the Pats to add both a NT and a DT in the draft.

For people talking about adding someone like Michael Jones or Justin Tuck or Jared Allen. My question is this. Can they stop the run??

For
Our own free agents:
Blount, Fletcher, Edelman. Hoomanawanui

Talib isn't worth the same money Grimes got.

Draft: NT, S, CB, RB, TE, OC/OG (in no Particular order).

What the hell is a "Locker-room Lawyer" and why is it bad?

There are a whole bunch of centers about to hit FA - de la Puenta, Dietrich-Smith, Satele, Wendell, and some others. It's an easily-filled position.

If they can address higher priorities in FA, I'd like to see the Pats kick Connolly to center (if he re-signs) and go get Xavier Su'a'Filo or Joel Bitonio in the draft.

Erm... Allen would start. He had 11 1/2 sacks last season in spite of constant double teams that he wouldn't face as much here. Ninkovich and draft pick/whoever else they pick up would spell him and Jones.

Have to agree with your post Cousin.

I have to agree with Kontra as well, Allen would be amazing here. But the only way we're getting him is if he decides to take winning over salary.

There's no way Allen would start over a dominant player like Ninkovich.

It means he has to "debate" things that he doesn't like about the team. Openly questioning authority and such. In other words, not really a leader.

And I would like a Fast! hard hitting *****hole istead of the overrated McCourty. I hope we don't make the mistake of extending McCourty who to me is Steve Gregory Pt.II Safeties who make NO PLAYS yeah I said it.

Cousin, You are getting into taboo land here. Most on this Forum see McCourty as the next Ed Reed. You can get smashed for saying sacrelige!

You see the same thing I do. I say he is "o.k." but his numbers are almost the same as one Eugene Wilson, another CB convert. Check the three years Wilson started and they are very close.

I think we need a starting Safety and "playmaker" that McCourty can compliment, not the other way around. Duron? He wasn't even a playmaker at Rutgers. He was good there, but was considered a UDFA until BB nabbed him.Smart kid but give me Browner at CB (cheap and fresh sitting four games)and Jarius Byrd (Talib money)and we are good to go. Both positions are filled.

The excuses I see on this Forum was McCourty was covering for the less talented Gregory. That could be true, but now we need someone who can cover his mistakes. All I see is....... late to the ball, late to the ball, late to the ball.

Again. I think he is decent, but he is not a playmaker we all thought he could be....is that a fair statement?.....He is Eugene Wilson PART II. Now Wilson was not that bad either. They are even the same size. Wilson started on Pats Super Bowl Teams.

I would not pay McCourty until I see what he does this year without Gregory as his excuse.

So my beast signs?:
Browner on a one year and Byrd who as a Safety should not cost us much more and maybe less than Talib (love to keep Talib but it looks bleak) at CB numbers.

Please keep that in mind. Byrd is a Safety who can cost less.

Byrd is the top safety out there this year and has made it clear he isn't signing anywhere for less than $9/year.

Ward is a better fit and will be cheaper.

Whitner should be a little cheaper still.

Clemons will be a lot cheaper.

I challenge you to find a single quote from a poster comparing McCourty to Ed Reed. I'm hungover at work, so I have all day to wait.

The hell does this even mean?

Jeez...Some told someone that someone knew that they thought Jared Allen was a locker room lawyer.

This is almost like a Washington political media story led by the word "sources".
I get it.

Quote? Jack it is understated here that general consensus on this Forum is that McCourty is in the cream of the crop in NFL Safeties from what I read. O.K. I will fix it for you. Ronnie Lott, Larry Wilson etc. You must be bored.

If you are atune here Jack, the media and fan base are "suggesting" that we long term McCourty prior to the season.

My question is, is McCourty replaceable or is he the face of the N.E. defense?
He is o.k. in my humble opinion so why not wait and see if he takes it up a notch.

A FS with only one INT and his PD are down 25% in 2013. That is not playmaker status.

O.K. Jack. Now you can have some fun.

I.m O.K. with Ward Cousin, but Talib will be at least $8.5m. I will take "Bryd and Browner" for $200 Alex.

I think you can get them both for $11mm-$11.5mm. You pick for Talib at $8.5mm+?.

I love Ward but not as great in coverage as Byrd.

McCourty was one of the least thrown at safeties in the NFL. Hard to get the stats you covet without making the mistakes needed for a team to look your way.

I'm also curious as to when int's became the measuring stick for how good a db is.

Arrington led the year once. Elite?

People aren't calling McCourty an incredible playmaker, they're calling him one of the best cover safeties in the NFL. They're asking for a playmaker to pair with him.

Wow, I hadn't thought of this, sorry my light bulb is a little dim.

What is the Patriots decided to not go after a top CB (Talib or Revis) and focused on upgrading Safety?

Maybe bring in Byrd and then go to the draft for CB, a lot of teams have won a SB without top talent at CB.

I'd take either Byrd or Ward + a solid corner (Browner?) over Talib for similar money, yes.

But only because I fear that hip injury...a lot. If I believed Talib could stay healthy, I'd take him.
