These have been bugging me for a while, and I haven't found an opportunity to ask them in a thread, and this seems the best way to get the largest audience to get a good answer.

First, an injury question. During one discussion on Josh Simmons, someone posted a clip where the "expert" was discussing the partial patella tear Simmons suffered last season. In it he mentioned that regardless of how well the surgery went and how well the rehab went, the athletic ability is NEVER as good as it was before. He gave a detailed work up of how the tendon worked and what goes on in the operation and rehab, so he sounded like he had medical insights.

So here's the question. Does anyone know of a player or players in the recent past who has suffered from a patella tear and has come back to perform as well as he did before? I know players have come back from these tears and have played, but was there a drop off?

I ask the question because Cole Strange is coming back from the same one Simmons suffered. I expect him to be our starting LG and do a decent job. But is that asking too much since one of his strengths is his uber athleticism. Will he be AS athletic?

The second question is a lot more straight forward. After you figure in the rookie salaries. How much salary cap space do we have left. Still 2 months left before camp is done and some interesting FA still out there.

Help a brother out.

About the patellar tendon issue
Ironically this injury ended Mayo’s career.
Seems to be a debatable unanswered issue

Of those who returned to play after surgery, average number of games played was 45.
The author says surgery usually results in good functional repair.
I think Strange should have a good chance to return to previous level but its not certain

See below;

Torn patellar tendon no longer a career death knell?

I don’t know of ANY athletes who had a PT and returned to what they were.

Examples of guys who returned but never regained the explosiveness:

Jimmy Graham
Victor Cruz
Cadillac Williams (actually tore both)
Ryan Williams
Chandler Jones (never returned but obv likely different reason…he also tore his brain apparently)

Seems tough on big fellas.

Can they still have power?

Yes.

Are they as nimble?

No.

I saw a tweet championing that Simmons is already sqwating 2/3rds his body weight. Yipee. Sounds pathetic.

I cant speak to football but being someone actively involved with MMA and a big fan for over 20 years the answer is No. Knee injuries are very common in MMA and lots of fighters have suffered injury to their patellar tendon and returned to be successful. However, they never look quite the same and its very obvious when you compare how well they moved prior to the injury vs after. I would say with a good surgeon and rehab you can get back to a professional level in a respected sport but you are not 100% what you once were.

NGL I'm not a doctor, I've never played one on TV and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I have no idea how the injury will impact Josh Simmons. I am however a life long sports fan and if I were playing the part of an NFL GM that injury would have moved him down to the 5th/6th round it's worth taking a flyer section of my draft board. IMO KC took a BB worthy 'when you're drafting towards the bottom ever year' dice roll selecting him at the end of the 1st.

It's a tough injury and I'd like to wish Simmons well but he's a Chief now so screw him.

Booger McFarland said he had the same injury the other night. He said it took him a full year to recover.

I was a big proponent of taking Josh Simmons... reading this article lead me to push the pause button, and start thinking that Will Campbell might just be the better choice... It paints a very bleak outcome for guys dealing with this particular injury...

Strange looked quick when returning from injury and playing center last year. However, he often got bull rushed because he couldn't anchor his position previously at guard. It's a roll of the dice that he earns a spot this year.

Interesting stuff. Thanks - I just skimmed it and it isn't an apples to apples comparison. Also, per the original clip, he could never confirm whether Simmons tear was a full on or a partial. He INFERRED by reports of Simmons relatively fast rehab that it probably was a partial team. A full ones are worst. Also only 3 of the 15 athletes they detailed in the report had "partial" tears.

It makes me more comfortable to know that there were 12 NBA players that suffered FULL tears and were able to recover well enough to get NBA jobs. But it's not an apples to apples comparison. Leaves me more hopeful for Strange.

well... look no further than Jerod Mayo... happened to him in 2014... he did make it back onto the field the following year... your judgement on his effectiveness afterwards will tell you all you need to know
