I've lived in many corners of so-called upstate. Upper Westchester, Capital region both Albany and Troy, Rochester. Been up here since 1995. When I landed a job in Rochester, I decided to move to Buffalo and commute an hour instead of living in Rochester (Rochester is nice, but I found a lot more to do and in general, a much prettier city in Buffalo). Of all the places upstate, central and west, I'd say Buffalo is the nicest, and I've seen every nook and cranny outside of the Adirondack Park.
I have begrudgingly allowed Bills gear into the house because they are religious about it in town and you don't want to be the only kid who can't dress down on Bills Friday. My oldest learned a lesson at JCC camp when she said she was a Patriots fan. She was treated horribly at summer camp after that (I can tell you chapter and verse what happened). It can even impact grades to display any other allegiance -- people can be that petty. We were almost disinvited from Thanksgiving once! We're the only ones that don't partake in Bills squares from any fundraising campaign.
My oldest now lives in New England.
Since I don't have a hockey team anymore (Whalers fan growing up) and since I still have hate for the Bruins because of that (even though I know members of the Jacobs family from living around here), I display my Buffalo pride by firmly adopting and rooting for the Sabres (who are even more inept historically than the Bills, if you can believe that).
