I've maintained all along that I'd rather not sign Reed, but I wouldn't be exactly heartbroken if the team went that route.
Just seems like there's a better way to use the resources than overpaying for a safety whose play is in decline. I'd prefer a more sustainable solution, myself.
This my view point as well.
Personally I don't think safety is as big a concern as everyone makes it out to be. I am in the group that assumes we leave McCourty at safety and he is currently our best DB. We also have a young player in Wilson who filled a dimeback role and back up safety role and got 4 picks doing it, he did have his struggles but I am willing to bank on growth from him. One of the reasons I am willing to bank on this is that worst case scenario I think Gregory is a decent starter who is memory serves me correct was hurt during our secondaries worst stretch last year and IMO his health was a part of the secondaries turn around (which seems to be credited completely to Talib and the McCourty move to Safety).
To me the above is not aweful and obviously if healthy Reed would be huge boost to the position and for that reason I am not against it but if we look at the CB position there is a completely different picture there which is just Dennard (I believe his sentenct will allow him to be here long before TC).
IMO any money spent in the secondary should be spent on CB not safety. If we spend on safety than we are likely moving McCourty back to CB and I am ok with this but my opinion is he should stay at safety.
My preference would be to spend on Talib or another one of the top CB on the market and fill in the rest of the CB depth with draft and mid level free agents.
My depth would look like this.
Safety:
Starting would be McCourty and hopefully Wilson steps up to take the other spot but I am OK with Gregory starting. The other obviously being the key depth. Ebner as number 4 and a key ST contributor is good.
Starting CB
Dennard and Talib (or top level free agent)
Nickel - Mid level Free Agent would be nice to have Arrington back as we know he is a good slot player and STer but if gone I think we should be able to find a slot corner.
Depth - A draft pick should definitely be added to this group perfably a high one. Also depending on is the slot corner we might need added depth on the outside (speaking specifically about Arrington).
This IMO would make for a much better secondary than we have started the last few seasons with. My concerns are that if McCourty were to go done that is a scary safety duo but most teams could say the same if their top safety went down.
Total offseason investment at safety we are not spending anything by my above plan and at CB we are investing heavy in a top free agent, mid level free agent, and a high draft pick.
