Great point here:

Mac Jones and Kenny Pickett are prime examples of how easily typical dink-and-dunk offenses can be defeated. Both former first-round picks were willing to throw the checkdown and take a profit on early downs, but they couldn’t do much more than that. Defenses were content with giving up 4- and 5-yard gains knowing that one negative play or turnover would derail the possession. There was no need to get out of coverages that encourage checkdowns and switch over to more aggressive ones that open up downfield opportunities.

Brissett is another name I would add to the list. We've seen a lot of examples of bad checkdowns these past 5 years.

Jimmy G was the king at this in SF. He loved it! Bro refused to look downfield and this really pissed off 49ers fans and probably the coaches as well which is why they swung for the fences in Trey Lance.

Brissett is another name I would add to the list. We've seen a lot of examples of bad checkdowns these past 5 years.

We have experienced the worst. Cam, Mac and Jacoby, all had trouble throwing a pass less than 10 yards. We lost several games as a result.

Tommy was the best at this, but he had Welker,Jules , and Gronk getting open before they could see it coming.
2007 was an anomaly.

It will be interesting if an offensive mind can scheme up some new underneath passing/blocking combinations that lead to 10+ yards against a Cover 2 defense. A new underneath game of some sort.
