The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

Trade Mallett to the Jags for their 2nd, Trade no 29 to the Titans for a 2nd, 3rd and 6th, Trade up into 5th with two 6ths.

Round 2) ASJ TE, Stephen Tuitt DE, Hagemen DT (he falls )
Round 3) Niklas TE, Martin C
Round 4) Ahmad Dixon SS
Round 5) Brandon Coleman WR
Round 6) DeDe Lattimore ILB
Round 7) Aaron Colvin CB

This would be perfect, but extremely unrealistic

Late round flyer? Do you really think Easley will get out of the 2nd round given that SF took Tank Carradine at #40 coming off an ACL last year?

OTG, BTW, is just as high on Easley as you are:

Category: Dominique Easley -

I'm personally hoping that he makes it until the 3rd round. If you remember, Carradine was a much more celebrated prospect at this time last year whereas Easley is gaining ground simply because Mayock put him in his top five yesterday. He may go in the 2nd, but a guy can hope.

With Respect, my good Brother Kontra, Easley was laying waste to entire Nations back in September, before the Injury, and was getting loads of Buzz in the Draft World.

OTG, have you forgotten I'm a Gator fan?

I assume you've been following Easley since he was in diapers, if not earlier.

Pfft. Bro, I've been following him since he traveled into the egg.

EDIT: By the way, I'm not sure where your response from yesterday went re: my mock draft. I read it, but was about to leave work at that time and didn't have a chance to respond to it. Keep in mind that this mock was based on ranking, pre-Combine. In general, I only do one mock pre-Combine, then do a few after the Combine when all of the dust settles and the chips start to fall into place. Glad to read you liked a few of the picks, though. More than likely, ASJ will move up into the first round in most of my post-Combine mocks with the team going heavily to the defensive side of the ball afterward.

Before the combine really starts to begin I thought I would do another mock offseason and draft. Raising the 2014 salary cap to $130mil certainly makes things a lot easier for the Pats although it could also potentially reduce the number of cap casualties from other teams. I think we are in pretty decent cap shape for 2014 to both retain our own free agents and potentially make a splash with outside free agents. I don’t think we need to do anything too drastic in order to create cap space, although there certainly are plenty of options if we need to create more.

*Disclaimer: This is what I would look to try and do for this offseason and not an attempt to try and predict what the Pats would do.

Current Cap Space $10.887mil

Cap Housekeeping

Re-structure Wilfork- ($4mil saving) *Turn $4mil of salary into NLTBE Incentives
Extend McCourty ($1mil saving)
Extend Gostkowski ($1mil saving)
Extend Slater ($250k saving)
Cut Connolly- ($2.5mil saving)
Cut Sopoaga- ($2.005mil saving)
Trade Mallett ($282k saving)

Net Cap Saving- 11.037mil

Available Cap Space $21.924mil

*Notes- We don’t need to do anything too drastic to create some cap space, I would like to gives guys like Adrian Wilson, Gregory, Wilfork and Kelly a shot in camp before cutting them. We will have plenty of cap to play around with so I don’t see any rush to get rid of them. I’ve left the contracts of Mayo and Mankins alone so next offseason he have the option to restructure (Mayo) or cut (Mankins) to gain some significant cap space.

Retain Free Agents

Re-sign WR Julian Edelman- 4 years $22mil ($10mil guaranteed, $6mil signing bonus, first 2 years fully guaranteed)*1st year cap hit $3mil

Re-sign CB Aqib Talib- 4 years $26mil + Incentives ($12mil signing bonus) *1st year cap hit $4mil

Re-sign MLB Dane Fletcher- 3 years $2.5mil ($300k signiing bonus) 1st year cap hit $830k

Re-sign RB- LeGarrete Blount- 3 years $5mil ($900k signing bonus) *1st year cap hit *1.050mil

Re-sign TE- Michael Hoomanawanuwi- 1 year $950k

Re-sign OT/G- Will Svitek 2 years $1.9mil ($100k signing bonus) *1st year cap hit 900k

Re-sign LS- Danny Aiken – 2 years $1.375mil (vet minimum, no guaranteed money) *1st year cap hit 645k

Re-signings 1st year cap hits= $11.375mil

Net Cap Impact= -7.91 cap space (accounting for replacing top 51 players)

Available Cap Space= 14.014mil

*Notes- The two key re-signings are obviously Edelman and Talib. I think Edelman is huge to this team not because of his talent level (although that is very good), but because he has shown he is able to do the hardest thing for a WR in New England to do, get on the same page with Brady and earn his trust. That is far more important than learning the system. Welker could only get $6mil per year last offseason so I don’t see Edelman getting more than that. $5.5mil per year is pretty fair with incentives to take it up if he continues to perform at a high level (100 catches, 1,000 yards, pro bowl etc).

Talib’s price dropped the 2nd half of the year and I think he is happy here. $6.5mil a year plus incentives is a good deal for both teams. I would look to make a fairly significant part of his salary game bonuses to protect us a bit from injury.

If Blount gets offered big money elsewhere good luck to him, RB’s are replaceable and there are a number of guys I like in the mid rounds of this draft that could contribute.

Sign Free Agents

Sign FA DE Michael Johnson- 5 years $45mil ($20mil guaranteed, $15mil signing bonus, 1st 2 years fully guaranteed) *1st year cap hit $4.5mil

Sign FA OG- Jon Asomoah- 5 years $30mil ($14mil guaranteed, $10mil signing bonus, first 2 years fully guaranteed) *1st year cap hit $3mil

Sign FA C/G- Ted Larsen- 2 years $2.25mil ($500k signing bonus) *1st year cap hit $1mil

Free Agent 1st year cap hit= 8.5mil

Net Cap Impact= -$7.015mil (accounting for replacing top 51 players)

Total Cap Space $6.999mil

*Notes- This is a very weak draft for DE’s so it’s something I would prioritize in free agency. I think Michael Johnson is a perfect fit and would be willing to pay reasonable money for him. 5 years $45mil is more than he was offered and turned down in Cinci and more than the top pass rusher in last year’s free agent class Paul Kruger.

I believe Asomoah is one of the most underrated OG’s in football and would immediately upgrade the RG position. Larsen is a former Pats draft pick that has starting experience and the versatility to play C or OG. He would be a fantastic option as a primary interior OL backup for a much cheaper price than Connolly.

I would love to add a veteran TE in free agency but the more I look at it the less talent I think will be available. I would love to get a Pettigrew, Gresham or Marcedes Lewis but that is looking unlikely. The best option might be to re-sign Hooman and target TE in the draft.

I would also love to add a safety but it’s hard to see who would be the best fit in terms of talent and value. I was very close to cutting Gregory and looking at FA Malcom Jenkins from New Orleans but he is a boom or bust type player, especially here. In the end I looked to play it safe and stick with Gregory for 1 more year.

We still have lots of cap space to add more veteran depth and make moves. The $6mil or so to sign rookies and in-season replacements isn’t needed at this stage so we can get close to the cap and regain more space during the roster cut downs.

Potential Camp Cuts (Net Cap Saving)
A. Wilson ($1.005mil)
S. Gregory ($2.335mil)
T. Kelly ($1.611mil)
V. Wilfork ($3mil)
T. Wilson ($278k)
J. Bequette ($80k)
DJ Williams ($150k)
C. White ($150k)
M. Forston ($75k)

Some players are more likely to be cut than others but we are likely to gain cap space during roster cuts even when accounting for players 52 & 53. That should give up plenty of cap space for IR and in season replacements with some cash to rollover into 2015.

Draft

*Trade QB Ryan Mallett to Houston for 2(33)*
I know is this unlikely but it’s a mock draft. Mallett to Minnesota for #40 is also another option.

1 (29). NT- Louis Nix III- ND
It’s not secret I love this big guy, I think he is an elite, top 10 talent. He will fall because of injury and the lack of demand for NT’s but he will be a steal. Reminds me so much of a young Vince Wilfork
Louis Nix III- Draft Breakdown

* TRADE 2(33) + 4(126) to SF for 2(61) + 3(77) +3(94)*
Mike Mayock said this is deepest draft for a decade and I want to take advantage of that. SF has a ton of picks and can afford to be aggressive and move up here.

2(61). TE- Austin Seferian-Jenkins- Washington (Troy Niklas)
Late round 2/early round 3 is where I would target a TE. ASJ seems to be dropping lately and there is a chance he could make it to #61. If he isn’t here though I wouldn’t be disappointed with Niklas. I actually like Niklas better as a prospect but the concussion thing scares the hell out of me.
ASJ- Draft Breakdown

2(62). C- Marcus Martin- USC (Weston Richburg/Travis Swanson)
OTG and Mayo have sold me, Martin is now my #1 C target in this draft. I love his combination of athleticism and power, especially in the run game. Once again I wouldn’t be disappointed with having to settle for Richburh or Swanson.
Marcus Martin- Draft Breakdown

3(77). DL- Dominique Easley- Florida (Will Sutton)
I really wanted Aaron Donald but he is rising and might not make it to #29 and I like Nix a little more. Easley isn’t a bad consolation prize. We need more pressure from the interior DL and Easley can provide that. He might be a one gap penetrator but I think there is room on the roster for a playmaker of his calibre. He has a lot of baggage in terms of injury having torn both ACLs in the past 3 years but early/mid 3rd round sounds about right to me. I would also settle for Will Sutton but he would need to drop back to his 2012 weight.
Dominique Easley- Draft Breakdown

* TRADE 3(93) to Jax for 4(101) + 5(138)*
* TRADE 3(94) to Minn for 4 (104) +5(136)*

Lots of depth, move on back and get similar rated players and accumulate picks

4(101). TE- Xavier Grimble- USC
A double dip at TE. He isn’t a move TE like some people want but I prefer traditional TE’s that can block. Grimble does have plenty of athletic upside though and could be a terrific complimentary pass catcher in the NFL.
Xavier Grimble- Draft Breakdown

4(104). CB- Pierre Desir- Lindenwood
Big, long and athletic outside CB that has a lot of potential to develop. I like him as a special teamer and #5 CB to give him time to develop into a quality outside CB.
Pierre Desir- Draft Breakdown

5(136). WR- Devin Street- Pitt
My favourite mid-round WR, I think Street will fall because he won’t test out great athletically. Personally I couldn’t care less about what he does in a t-shirt and shorts, I love what he can do on the field. He’s a tall and long WR with a huge catch radius, soft hands and fantastic body control, exactly what I look for in an outside WR. He works the entire field and could develop into a really solid contributor.
Devin Street- Draft Breakdown

5(138). QB- Aaron Murray- Georgia
SEC QB with lots of experience, a good arm and leadership qualities. Exactly the kind of guy I want sitting and learning behind Brady.
Aaron Murray- Draft Breakdown

6(182). S- Vinnie Sunseri- Alabama
I’ve always liked Sunseri and he has a knack for making big plays in critical moments. He’s coming off an injury so he could be a candidate to sit for a year to get 100% healthy, but if he is healthy I think at worst he would compete with Ebner as a special teamer. I think he can do more than that though and be a rotational S in the NFL.
Vinnie Sunseri- Draft Breakdown

6(190). CB- Aaron Colvin- Oklahoma
I am sensing a trend. I love taking a chance with late round picks on formerly highly regarded players with injury concerns and Colvin offers as much upside as just about anyone at this stage. Put him on IR for a year and have him start fresh in 2015.
Aaron Colvin- Draft Breakdown

6c. FB- Trey Millard- Oklahoma
An early binky of mine that I won’t let go. The most versatile player in the draft that is going to be a steal because of injury. Perhaps a redshirt candidate to get him 100% healthy before trying to fit him into the offense but he is going to be a weapon. The only comparison in the NFL is Marcel Reece.
Trey Millard- Draft Breakdown

6c. OG- Spencer Long- Nebraska
Another guy falling because of injury, Long could have been a day 2 pick before getting hurt. He’s a former walk on that worked his way up to being one of the best O-lineman in the Big 10, so you know he has a good work ethic and drive. I love those kinds of players.
Spencer Long- Draft Breakdown

7. OG- Chris Burnette- Georgia
I’ve got to give credit to Snake Eyes for introducing me to Burnette. A veteran SEC OG that has work to do in pass protection but he sure can run block. He is really athletic and gets to the second level better than just about any OG in this draft. If he can improve his pass blocking he has a chance at being an NFL OG. He is so good blocking downfield and getting to the second level I joked that he could be a 305lb FB.
Chris Burnette- Draft Breakdown

Target UDFA’s

S- Nick Williams- North Alabama
If you want a Kam Chancellor type safety this is your guy. I wouldn’t have a problem with drafting him.
Nick Williams- Hudl

QB- Dustin Vaughn- West Texas A&M
This guy has an absolute CANNON!
Dustin Vaughn- Draft Breakdown

MLB-Max Bullough- Michigan State
Still don’t know why he was suspended for breaking team rules so there is some character concerns there, but the fact that his teammates have come out and support him leads me to believe its not too serious. He was the heart and soul of a terrific Michigan State defense and I think his instincts, passion and intelligence will make him an NFL MLB.
Max Bullough- Draft Breakdown

OT- Cornelius Lucas- Kansas State
DE/TE- Larry Webster- Bloomsburg
DT- Zach Kerr- Delaware
RB- Damian Williams- Oklahoma
QB- Keith Price- Washington

*Notes
I know the Mallett trade is unlikely but it’s a mock draft. If we weren’t able to make the trade I would follow a similar plan, but instead of trading down from 33 I would trade down from 29 for a similar return, minus giving up our 4th. Then instead of Nix in the 1st I would target NT- Justin Ellis in the late 4th and keep everything else similar. This would also be my approach if Nix, Hageman or Donald are all gone by #29.

I know a lot of people will think this is far too many picks, but I’m not too concerned. There are a number of players coming off injuries that could be NFI/PUP/IR candidates. I think this draft would add depth and competition to a number of positions and put us in a position to build the best team possible. I would expect all of the guys in the top 5 rounds to make the team and anything after that is a bonus. The chances of 6th and 7th rounders panning out aren’t great so why not spread the risk around and take a few more chances.

One idea that I have been tossing around that I know won’t be popular is trading away our 2015 1st round pick for a 2nd in 2014. This is such a strong draft with a record number of underclassman declaring including RS Sophomores and I have a hard time seeing next year’s draft being anywhere near as strong. I think there is a decent chance that someone we have a 1st round grade on could make it to the mid-2nd round, in which case I wouldn’t have a problem making that trade. If someone like David Yankey, Ra'Shede Hageman or Bashaud Breeland are sitting there I would pull the trigger. St Louis at 44 seems like an ideal trading partner because they already have a lot of picks and are almost certain to add more with a trade down from #2. If they trade down and add an additional high 2nd they might like the idea of turning their 2nd into a future 1st.

This is a very weak draft for DE’s so it’s something I would prioritize in free agency.

Good job above. I thought I would just single this out. I think it is right on, and it's a change in my thinking. I don't know if Michael Johnson is doable (I would prefer Greg Hardy, and I'm pretty sure he's not), but I do think that a rotational DE in FA is fairly likely given how little depth there is in the draft.

The thing I like about targeting DE in free agency is there seems to be something for everyone depending on what you are looking for. You have the high end guys like Hardy, Johnson, Houston and Bennett. The ageing vets on shorter deals like Jared Allen, Anthony Spencer and Justin Tuck. There are some younger guys with potential like Willie Young, Everson Griffen and Jason Worilds. Then you potentially have big name cap casualties like Demarcus Ware and Julius Peppers. There is a good variety and potentially some value there.

I like Johnson the most because I think he is a great fit for the system as both a pass rusher and strong run defender. I am also confident he will actually reach free agency unlike Hardy and Bennett who both may be tagged. I also think if the reports from last year where true that he was a guy we might have shown strong interest in that he may be someone we revisit.

Not so sure I like Nix with the 29th. Just seems like a big body that doesn't get as much push as I'd like to see. I can see the pick happening but I'm hoping for more of a penetrator. Hageman or Donald would be the guys I'd like to see fall. I also like Jernigan more than Nix and like the fall back plan of Justin Ellis in the 4th or 5th.

I'm all for Michael Johnson or Greg Hardy being added to the team. Certainly would give the pass rush a boost without sacrificing run support. If they can't be had I'd like to see someone like Trent Murphy added through the draft at DE.

Ideally for me if by some fat chance in hell Mallett was traded to Houston(pipe dream) I'd go Donald/Hageman/Jernigan and then Trent Murphy. Minus the free agent possibility I think that combo would shore up the front 7 tremendously into the future.

Thought your team rebuild and mock was very good btw.

Food for thought:

Bill Belichick pre-draft transcript - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

The question is, given the resources at hand, which is most useful? A TE? A WR? A DL? etc., etc., etc.

I think we'd need to go through free agency to answer that question. If BJ Raji is cut and we offer something competitive and he comes here, DL falls way down the list for me. If we sign Edelman and Emmanuel Sanders, ditto WR.

Remember, in BBs perfect world all positions are capably filled before the draft. Then the draft board doesn't get compromised by reaching for position.

John Schneider pretty much said yesterday at the Combine that Seattle wouldn't use the tag on Bennett. With that said, he wants to stay in Seattle, and I can't see the Pats paying that much more than the Seahawks. I badly wanted the Pats to sign Bennett last year. :bricks:

For me Hardy > Bennett > Johnson. I think Hardy and Bennett project better to LDE, and also have the versatility to move inside. But all 3 of those guys would be very, very good additions to the team. I see Corey Wootton as the best "next tier" young player to add to a rotation, followed by Everson Griffin (but he reportedly wants to be paid like a star DE). I'm less enthusiastic about getting a veteran retread, but, as you say, the FA DE group is very deep and diverse, in contrast to the draft DE group.

I still don't see Wilfork coming back effectively in 2014. If he can, I'd be the first one to cheer, but I just don't see it.

I too would much rather add a penetrating DT stud early on - either Aaron Donald or Dominique Easley - and add someone like Justin Ellis later for depth. Nix's knee issues and weight scare me. I think Ellis has great agility and quickness for his size, and could be just as good.

I'd love to add Murphy or Aaron Lynch. Murphy is one of my favorite played in the draft, but I acknowledge that there are questions about where he projects. He's not fluid enough in space to be a LB for us, and the question is whether he can bulk up to be a full time line player. Lynch is a clearer fit, but has more question marks. I think Will Clarke from West Virginia and Taylor Hart from Oregon could be sleepers. Brent Urban as a DT/DE could be a very solid addition.

Alright, for the sake of starting discussion, I'll play along. I'm going with a more plausible Houston trade. Let's say they give us #65 instead of #33. Why not? I also used Craig Turner's comp pick projections to put the picks about where they should be # wise.

1. #29-Trent Murphy, Stanford DE/OLB 6-6 261
Nink and Jones can't play every snap. 15 sacks last year
2. #62-Daniel McCullers, Tennessee NT/DT 6-7 350+
Healthy appetite should consist of 2 blockers, Wilfork's heir
3. #65 (Hou)-Weston Richburg, Colorado St. C 6-4 300
Solder, Mankins, Connolly, Vollmer, Cannon, Kline, this guy
3. #93-C.J. Fiedorowicz, Iowa St. TE 6-6 262
Gronk insurance
4. #128-Keith McGill, Utah CB/S 6-3 214
For the love of God Bill, no more DB smurphs!
6. #196(Phil)-Cody Hoffman, Brigham Young WR 6-4 218
For the love of God Bill, no more WR smurphs!
6. #204-Ryan Hewitt, Stanford FB/TE 6-4 245
Love hybrids
6. #210(Comp)-Tom Savage, Pittsburgh QB 6-4 245
I feel compelled to take a QB with a 6th Rd Comp Pick
7. #242-Matt Hall, Bellhaven OT 6-9 325
Why not? He's huge!

Fire Away!

Well, I'm OK with McCullers, Richburg, and Savage. I don't know what universe Fiedorowicz is Gronk insurance, but it's not this one....maybe Hoo-man insurance.

It appears that you're focused on tall players. I'm not sure that's the way to go. For every Brandon Browner, there's two dozen tall CBs that wash out of the NFL (or move to safety) because they don't have the short-area quickness and hip flexibility to turn and run with WRs.

Draft

One idea that I have been tossing around that I know won’t be popular is trading away our 2015 1st round pick for a 2nd in 2014. This is such a strong draft with a record number of underclassman declaring including RS Sophomores and I have a hard time seeing next year’s draft being anywhere near as strong. I think there is a decent chance that someone we have a 1st round grade on could make it to the mid-2nd round, in which case I wouldn’t have a problem making that trade. Without commenting on your draft selections, I love the amount of thought you put into these posts. Bullough is one of my favorite guys in the draft. I would absolutely spend a pick on him to make sure we get him. I see another Dan Conner-type MLB that could spend 12 years in the league, health permitting.
