The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

The pats bust much more frequently on 2nd round picks which is why I don't like the idea of moving out if round 1. See exhibits dowling and chung as reminders.

P.S. - Not a fan of LeGarrette "fat arse" Blount

Great mock! I would be delighted with this draft.

Of course I would be delighted if BB didn't keep wasting second round picks overdrafting unknown or very low rated DBs.

My guess is that Hageman winds up a top ten pick. But if is he there at #32, I say we hire Bolt to sprint the card up to the podium in record time.

So if Hageman is off the board, how does that affect what you do in the first?

I personally feel that Darqueze Dennard may be underrated.

Defensive tackle is still the number one priority. Another defensive tackle to watch this season is Anthony Johnson from LSU.

Way way too early mock draft.

1st round- Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon
Colt+Lyerla+Oregon+v+Washington+State+3XG2UMlqinKl.jpg

I know there are some concerns about his hands but we need to fix the TE position and i cant think of a better hernandez replacement. He can line up wherever you want him to:TE, WR, RB..Fast and strong, reminds you of anyone? yup, hernandez 2.0.

2nd round - Timmy Jernigan, DT, FSU
7923845.jpeg

Another big need. If we cant get Hageman or Nix this is my guy. Fell in love with him last year while watching Werner and Carradine. If you want a guy inside to go after the QB this is him. Great speed, great moves.

3rd round - Dion Bailey, SS, USC

6787638.jpg

I know what you're thinking. "Another safety this high? And one not from rutgers?" Not likely, but this guy is a playmaker. He played as a linebacker but is too small for that so he changed to safety this year, a hybrid OLB/S used to play in the box and with amazing ball hawking skills, you will hear a lot about him.

4rd round - Ego Ferguson, DT, LSU

dt.common.streams.StreamServer.cls

I expect this guy to rise a lot this season. With all the attention going to his partner Anthony Johnson he has a chance to put up very good numbers and so far he's doing just that.
Very athletic for a guy his size, the Pats double dip again at a position of need.

5th round - Gabe Ikard, C, Oklahoma

Gabe-Ikard-Courtesy-of-ESPN.jpg

Intelligent and versatile, Ikard only needs to get a little stronger to be an NFL pro. With Wendell struggling and no one to compete with him i would welcome a center very much and Ikard has everything you look for.

6th round - Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska

72970667.jpg

A strong and tall ex wide receiver. He's no Richard Sherman...yet

7th round - Some guy, all, Rutgers

Further explanation not necessary. :D

Isn't Ego a bit too "I am" for a Belichick pick?

Isn't Ego a bit too "I am" for a Belichick pick?
I see what you did there.

Still:

Ego Jr. said people ask him about his name “all the time” but his name — in the sense of egotistical — isn’t a reflection of him.

“That ain’t my style,” he said.

3rd round - Dion Bailey, SS, USC

Heh. Seriously, though, my problem is not that he doesn't play for Rutgers, but that he does play for USC. BB does not appear to have much confidence in the talent they produce.

I haven't watched a single CFB game this year (where do people find the time?) so this is somewhat perfunctory I'm afraid.:

Rnd 1 Trade this pick in a similar vein to last year for a 2nd, 3rd and 5th. The Colts perhaps?

Rnd 2A Travis Swanson, OC, Arkansas

It's his reputed arm length that intrigues me in that a prospect with better than average body types, athletics etc is usually a plus factor when considering a potential BB pick. SEC experience against some of the better college linemen also helps. And consider this from his new HC who knows a thing or two about quality linemen:

Ironically, I think he kind of blends the two," Bielema told NFL.com on the SEC's weekly teleconference. "Peter Konz went second round to the Falcons, and Travis Frederick first round to the Cowboys. He probably grabs the strengths of both those players and combines them into one. Travis (Swanson) is the most talented player that I've been around at that position. He's going to skyrocket, I think, in the NFL draft. I think (he was rated) somewhere in the fifth, sixth, seventh round, in preseason, before the season got rolling. He's going to skyrocket. He's long with his arms, plays extremely physical, had 16 knockdowns on Saturday, makes every call up front, run-wise and pass protection. (He's) one of our best leaders off the field. He's embodied everything we could ever ask in a teammate here at Arkansas. The good news is, the NFL is going to get a product that will play for a long, long time."

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema raves about center Travis Swanson - NFL.com

Rnd 2B Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee

Makes me think about immovable objects and irresistable forces. Ideal for our 3-4 looks and two gapping principles. And Big Vince can finally get a rest.

Rnd 3A CJ Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa

Might seem a bit hopeful expecting him to fall to the 3rd but his lack of explosion might make it happen. Excellent blocker and clutch receiver, Fiedorowicz would allow BB to use Gronk more flexibly and gives us an extra blocker in the increasingly prevalent running game. This pick does mean I'm hoping that Dudfeld becomes Studfeld in time.

Rnd 3B DeAndre Coleman, DT, California

Had him in my first mock and his 3-4 DE type size still makes him a reasonable pick.

Rnd 4 Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood

I don't know much about him save that he's being touted as the best small school prospect this year and that he's a 6-1 CB that runs in the 4.5's. Also has a cool name.

Rnd 5A Jeff Matthews, QB, Cornell

Bye bye Ryan Mallett, hello future. Matthews looks like he could slot into the Patriots offense fairly comfortably in that he is a tall, strong armed pocket passer and has nimble enough feet to avoid the rush. Hopefully the Ivy League credentials mean that he picks up the offense.

Rnd 5B Michael Dyer, RB, Louisville

Obviously a very high risk pick, but it's the 5th round so what the heck. Big big upside. Dude is fast (faster than Blount anyway).

Rnd 6A JC Copeland, FB, LSU.

I've seen it suggested we'll get two 6ths as compensatories. I'm not one to pass up on extra picks to mock ;)

If we're going to feature a FB in our offense, let's get a good one. At 6'1 and 270lbs with some pretty good athleticism (did you see his catch against 'Bama?)

JC Copeland 2012 LSU Season Highlights - YouTube

Rnd 6B Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech

Don't scoff!. Let's see what he can do with a bit of NFL coaching. Sky's the limit athletically and arm-wise. He's also a former TE. How about potential as an AHern replacement down the line. Worth the gamble.

Rnd 6C Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsburg

He's 6'6" and long and has drawn Michael Johnson comparisons, a player BB has reportedly been very interested in. Throw in his former basketball credentials and his NFL blood lines and he's interesting as a potential pick.

Rnd 7 Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois

A very instinctive safety. My cup of tea. If Nickoe Whitley fell this far, he'd get serious consideration too.

If we took Colt Lyerla I would be so happy. I'm telling you guys he would fit our offense perfectly.

Doing this with a Mallett trade for a second round pick.

Round 1: Stephon Tuitt DT/DE - Notre Dame

Round 2a: Brandon Coleman WR - Rutgers

Round 2b: Travis Swanson C - Arkansas

Round 3: Jace Amaro TE - Texas Tech

Round 4: AJ McCarron QB - Alabama

Round 5: Dri Archer OW/Return specialist - Kent State

Round 6: Andrew Norwell OT/OG - Ohio State

Round 7: Marquis Flowers S/OLB - Arizona

Trading back, first rounder gone for like a 2nd and a 4th

2. De'Anthony Thomas - RB - Oregon (46)
Play maker! Return game, running game, passing game - perfect weapon for the Patriots.

2. Daniel McCullers - DT - Tennessee (68)
Giant prototypical NT, have McCullers to spell for Wilfork and Armstead for Kelly.

3. C.J. Fiedorowicz - TE - Iowa (80)
Less mobile Gronk? Yes please, can see him sneaking up towards round 1 by the time of the draft, though.

4. Trey Millard - FB - Oklahoma (107)
Runs, blocks and catches passes - another weapon for Brady.

4. Chris Burnette - OG - Georgia
Some more depth at guard, big guy too at 315lbs.

5. Bryan Stork - C - Flordia St (136)
Not the biggest C in the world, but not sold on Wendell this season at all.

6. Jared Abbrederis - WR - Wisconsin (180)
Liked the look of him a couple of years ago, yes it's another young receiver in the team but this late in the draft why not.

6 comp. Isaiah Lewis - SS - Michigan St (197)
This late in the draft you're looking at depth/camp fodder whilst looking for potential lightning in a bottle.

6 comp. Cairo Santos - K - Tulane (233)
Gostkowski is having a good year so far but why not use a comp pick on bringing in a camp leg who can make bring some competition.

7. Logan Thomas - QB - V Tech (280)
I've heard of him before, that's pretty much the only reason for picking him here, camp arm who can actually throw the ball though!

Numbers at the end from CBS draft rankings.

Really like your McCullers and Fiedorowicz picks (see mine 4 posts up) and that Thomas pick is really intriguing. Who's roster spot do you see him taking? I wouldn't want him taking snaps from Vereen but he could arguably replace both Washington's and Edelman's snaps on his own. He'll certainly score points if used correctly. Also like the Millard pick but don't know enough about the rest to comment. Nice mock.

Thomas - Washington and Blount will probably be gone so having 2 Swiss army knife RBs in the team in Thomas & Vereen adds versatility to the team and he adds the home run threat on both offense and Special teams. With his ability to line up at WR too there's a ton of things McDaniels can do, just think of an up tempo no huddle with Vereen, Thomas, Gronk, Fiedorowicz and then a pick of any 1 of the WRs for the other spot.

Millard would also be a more than ideal replacement for both Blount and Develin.

Yup. more I think about it, the more I like it. Might be too much of a luxury pick for BB but I'd definitely get behind it.

Love the Hageman pick. Anthony Johnson however probably needs to come off your draft board. A pure one gapper, who got destroyed by the Georgia center last night. It was uglier than a Roger Goddell family reunion.

Personally, I think its premature to write off Johnson as a 1-gap player only. Playing with gap discipline is part mental (technique, instincts) and part physical (having the strength to stay home, length to keep blockers off, etc.). He has the physical tools and wouldn't be the first guy to acquire the mental ones.

That said, I don't really care for him. I've soured on this class of defensive tackles in general. Hard to get excited about Tuitt, Johnson, McCullers, and Jernigan. Sutton blows, and Coleman and Nix haven't shown any pass rushing potential. Anyone have sleepers I should be watching for?

my first mock draft..

1 - Louis Nix III - DT ND (i know, top 10 pick)
2 - Darqueze Dennard - CB Michigan State
3 - Dominique Easley - DT Florida
4 - Trey Milliard - FB Oklahoma
5 - AJ McCarron - QB Alabama
6 - Stanley Jean Baptiste - CB Nebraska
7 - Brock Vereen - S Minnesota

or, if you want a more realistic first pick: Tuitt, Lyerla or Sepherian Jenkins.
