Keep this in mind when you see the Jets linked with any FA who is going to count for more than $2MM against the cap. It isn't gonna happen.
The Jets are STILL saddled with those 7 untradeable, uncutable contracts (Harris, Cromartie, Revis, Sanchez, Fergeson, Mangold, and Holmes) who will count $80MM against the cap. That means the rest of the 46 remaining players on their final 53 are going to be splitting up the remaining $41MM, or an average of just under $900,000/man. I won't matter who they cut (and they have a number of "cap cuts" that they can make), they STILL have that $80MM nut that stares them in the face.
This was the situation facing the Pats in 2000, only WORSE. Even the most ardent rational Jet fans are coming to grips with this reality. 2013 will be a lost year for Jet fans. Hopefully (for them) their new GM is a smart man and can accept that reality and start getting his team ready for 2014 right now. Rex is there to take the heat for whatever happens this season. Then after a couple of years drafting in the top 10 and some cap room, maybe he can start to bring his team back from the brink in 2014.
The Bad news for Pats fans will be it will be harder to pick on them when they are so down. All they will be able to talk about on JI will be Pats threads and "spygate" -
