I mean the patriots record since we drafted him is 6-20. Is he that much of an impact player? Is he Patrick Surtain perennial all pro hall of fame good? Otherwise, I would easily accept two first round picks for him
Let’s say for the sake of argument that the entire league now agrees on Gonzalez and think that going forward he’ll be pretty good but not the best in the league. They expect him to have the career of Asante Samuel, basically. Pretty happy to have him as a #1 CB but not quite top tier.
What would be the trade value of trading for an Asante Samuel level player in his second year of a controlled rookie contract?
I’d say that’s worth more than two firsts from a perennial contender like the Chiefs or Ravens. This isn’t a guy you’re struggling to fit under the cap next year. He’s not a malcontent or a non system fit. In my view a team would have to way overpay for him. (And I think that Gonzo’s career will probably be better than Samuel for the record.)
After his third regular season, so January 2026.When is it "legal" to extend Gonzo? I know you can do it anytime in baseball. I am curious if we should do it this off-season, while we're flush with cap space, and sign him up for a good deal for both sides. I think Surtain got his after season 3 so if we can lock Gonzo up for something like 6/80, 40 gtd, would be fair, especially since he is under control for 3 more years and already missed injury time. It would make him think about security at such a young age. Two years from now top CB's could be making $25M - $30M/year so lock up our best defender now if possible.
The other option is very unlikely but if we sign and/or trade for a LT (Wills) and WR (Tee Higgins), for example, this off-season then we could land Travis Hunter or Will Johnson in the draft to offset the huge contract Gonzo will demand and even maybe trade him in a year or two, like it's been done with other very good CB's lately, for a very good haul.
I don't know, I'm just rambling first thing in front of the PC.
