Sunday Morning Conversation With Michael Felger

This is an absolute fantastic read. Mike's pretty open and honest throughout the entire piece, and it's definitely one you may want to read if you haven't already. Good stuff

This was the best part of the interview IMO.

What players have you had a bad relationship with?

I wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy with [Richard] Seymour. Corey Dillon almost shoved me in a locker. Willie McGinest questioned my sexuality.

I was actually surprised Felger didn't come off as more of a D-bag in the interview. I don't listen to him on the radio any more, but I thought he was fantastic on WEEI's Sunday morning football show with Steve Nelson, Paul Perrillo and Tom Curran.

I would agree....... I mean, he's still a d-bag for some of the stuff he's done and said in the past, but that interview comes off pretty honest (and good).

Not too bad, but come Monday he will just follow along for the sake of his ratings.. he comes off well in this interview, but relishes being the resident contrarian.. i.e. Ron Borges Jr.

That was a great read. I was pleasantly surprised about how self-effacing he is.

That's because his on-air persona is an act.

He's a salesman. In his profession, there is only one objective and he focuses on it very well.

Basically, he's claiming to be balanced in what he says, but not claiming to be balanced in what he emphasizes.

And he's conscious that the imbalance can go too far.

That's fair.

I am sure he is a contrarian in all facets of his life...not that there is anything wrong with that.
I was actually happy to see a guy who was confident in how he reports things and is not too proud to say he screws up occasionally. In many ways, I agree with many of his assessments.

I fully agree, which is why I pointed out that his on-air persona is obviously an act.

He's far more circumspect when the TV lights go off. Like a WWE wrestler. He does his job well, he gets ratings.

Felger is a smart man, he embellishes things for the radio. He went from a bruins beat reporter to basically the face of Boston sports media.

I almost thought it was an interview of Steve from Fall River.

That's a great assessment, shmessy. He pisses me off or a regular basis, but one thing you have to say about Felger is that he is consistent. He hated Moss when he was at Minny and Oakland. He didn't want him on the Packers when everyone thought he was going there. He was the first guy that I remember to seriously rag on Farve, not only for the retirement fiascos, but for his play....and back it up with facts. On the day Moss was traded, it was Flegar who had all the stats that pointed out Moss's reduced impact on this Pats offense.

Now he drove me nuts over his opinions on the Samuel and Seymour trades, and he, like most of the media who relies on players for stories, always sides with the Player in any contract disputes, and his over zealous attempts at not being viewed as a homer. are clearly frustrating sometimes. But he clearly ISN'T Ron Borges, and he clearly is very good at his job....which BTW is not necessarily to always please the likes of us.

Great job by the interviewer.

He also destroyed borges
On tv 2 weeks ago. How can you hate that?

"Boo Hoo Drew Crew"?

That is just absolutely awesome. I love it!

That was an interesting read. Michael is what he is, smart enough to have been the best beat reporter in the mix but savvy enough to have not wanted to settle for just being that because of the era he found himself living and employed in. Better to aspire to be Glen Ordway in these times than Kevin Mannix. Ordway however had the market cornered already so Michael had to take the brash contrarian track to finding his niche. He's not even adverse to using the ultimate agenda driven contrarian (which is not what he is) to make his mark. He put Borges back on the air after he lost his Globe job to the plagerism scandal, but did it mostly to beat on him while drawing ratings for his fledgling shot at a radio gig on the now defunct ESPN radio. Oddly Ordway is in the midst of doing the same thing here to fend off the challenge of Felger's second attempt at establishing a competitor to WEEI with the CBS backed 98.5 venture. People just need to appreciate what is truly Michael's core belief here and it's got nothing to do with this team being right, wrong or indifferent (the objective critic blather). It's strictly to advance Michael Felger's career. Which is why you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt and realize while he is still capable of some lets's call it intuitive insight, he's also capable of spewing some largely nonsensical crap just to stir the pot. He loves to call the likes of Ordway or even Reiss homers - which is fine as long as you realize he is just taking that tack because they succeeded in occupying a niche that was no longer available to him. His is not necessarily better or worse, just different and it was available for a reason... This teams success made it so. As did the nature of the beast in this market (the Red Sox fan 86 year fueled fellowship of the miserable pre-existing core demographic as Pitino aptly labeled it).

This interview was definitely revealing as to who Felger is.
Can't say I hate the man. Then again, I never did.
Thought it was interesting that he admitted coming to this forum.
Why doesn't he post on it for us? It's not like we don't have rules of civility here, right???

Sorry he is still a D-Bag. About him stealing Borges' lunch money, I do not buy it; there is no way that the offense is better without Moss. And when you have dueling D-Bags, how can you say that one of them prevailed?

And as far as his predictions, I certainly hope that he is right for once, but he has been almost uniformly wrong in the time I have listened to him. Remember how he predicted that the Patriots would beat the Ravens in the playoffs last year? Heck he even predicted that a meteor would hit the earth few months ago (when astronomers told us it would be a near miss).

If he was a poster on this board, he would have been crucified for his idiotic predictions, lack of basic football knowledge, and personal attacks. Hell I got crucified for saying that Ty Warren should have been in the off season program...

You have mentioned that you visit Patsfans.com. What draws you to the website?

The message board. I don’t do twitter, so I find it the best place to go on the internet to find breaking news involving the team. If anything is reported anywhere regarding the Pats, it goes up there pretty quick. And it’s not just news, but hidden stories.

This forum should be proud of itself.

One thing I agree with him is that we will win a superbowl within the next 3 years.
