Summer vacation

If you're a fan of that type of music, Frenchmen Street in New Orleans is a must. Bourbon Street is sleazy, the other parts less so. It is a really old city so be prepared for ancient warped brick sidewalks. Lots of homeless people but they don't bother you. Never once felt even the least bit threatened. Considering it is a tourist destination the prices for everything were quite reasonable. We're already talking about going back.

My daughter moved to LA with a few friends about five or six years ago. She was/still is really big into the arts - taking part in community plays, etc. Also took small parts in any movie that was being filmed near us, as an extra, intern, doing something behind the scenes, etc. She went there with the idea of getting involved in work behind the camera and did a few things. Problem was that so many others had similar dreams that they didn't pay crap, plus wanted you to be available 7 days a week. Then covid happened and the entire industry was shut down. She did waitressing and is now making a boat load of money at a fancy Beverly Hills hotel/restaurant. Waits on celebrities daily.

But now she is thinking about moving back. She considered trying to work her way up in management but decided against that. She and her sister (still here 3,000 miles away) were always extremely close, best friends; I'm sure that is part of her decision to return. She has also been put off for awhile by the amount of homelessness, drug addicts sleeping on the sidewalk, used syringes in the gutter, etc. Her plan is to go back to school, finish her degree, and get more of a long term "real" career rather than just a good paying job.

Even though she is moving back she thoroughly enjoyed it out there. A year or two ago she said she loved living out there. Your daughter is living in the city so it shouldn't be that big of a culture shock.
My daughter the same, has done few small movie parts the last few years. The waiting around is crazy 60-80 hrs for seconds worth of film. She’s thinking along the same lines as the other billion plus who want to become famous. Fortunately she did graduate with a marketing degree but still relies on not having a stable career. The homelessness out west is appalling, the East Coast is the place to be…shhhh don’t tell nobody

Been to Japan earlier in 2024. If you can spring it - it’s a worthwhile destination. Tokyo is super safe, very interesting, and set up in such a way that you needn’t be fluent in their language to ‘understand what to do’. Kind people, things to see and do. Can’t wait to return.

In a few weeks : Scotland. Highland Games in Inverness, history in the streets of Edinburgh. Maybe DC in late September. Trying to beat potential unrest in late 2024/early 2025. Might prioritize other countries until I’m confident the US is safe, regardless of the outcome in November. The temperature is high atm, and I’m not referring to the heatwave.

Had Japan planned last year with a dear friend and my wife. Unfortunately he got sick and eventually passed. Next year we are heading back to the Philippines, my wife’s from there, and definitely want to visit Japan. Will definitely reach out before to find out the do’s and don’ts if that’s ok …

100% my friend. I turned 50 in FEB. thought “I better go before I am too old”. Pffffftt. What an easy easy country to visit. I’d return at 80 if my health holds up ! So easy.

And the yen is the lowest vs the dollar in decades.

I live in a small village of less than 2000 people. Believe it or not, a young man from here - a former student - lives in Tokyo and joined us for a day to see things off the path a tad. I treated him and my partner for two meals. Lunch ? 32 CAD$ for three. Supper ? 36 CAD$ including a drink and dessert. Your dollar - assuming your American - will go on and on and on in Japan atm !

And there is ZERO gouging. The ramen shop next to that huge temple will cost the same as one in the sticks.

Beautiful country. Feel free to PM. I’m no expert. But I’m already looking to see when I can return.

So … was curious what people had planned for the summah? Not sure where that topic goes, it’s my first attempt at starting a discussion. Not sure if one has even been started …
What the hell is summer vacation?

Live in Newport Ri … there’s always a guest or two continuously lol.. but come August the wife and I are heading to Europe for three months. Starting in Spain and ending up in either Slovenia or Vienna. Niece is getting married in September in Florence so we decided to go on an adventure. You get to get off the ship at all?
That’s quite the adventure! Congrats on your niece’s wedding.

Yes, I’ll be able to get out and about a little. I was hoping for Charleston, Tampa, mobile, or Boston, but they chose Bayonne for the yard.

Vacation? Trip? What are these things? Someone please explain.

Burning man would be a trip … literally. I’m not sure I could handle the debauchery at this age.
Pace yourself. You’re old enough to know how to do that, just have to be disciplined. It’s a marathon not a sprint!

When we lived in MA we'd occasionally go to NH. Now that we're in NH we occasionally go to MA.

I was pushing for a trip to Italy a few years ago but by the time the kids were able to go their mother couldn't do it. I originally planed to leave someone with my wife and go with the kids but that idea was crazy. They had a great time without us.

Heading to SoCal for a week. Stealing my daughter's oldest and bringing him back here for a month with us and his cousins. Then back to CA in August for another week and drop-off.

Very little WORK this summer. Somehow, I let myself get roped into going to a convention in the fall, and it looks like I'll have to commit to more conventions to get the contract I want. Still, it's more a year-round summer for me now, and I love it!

something along these lines for me this summer...

Last year we did a road trip. Drove from Vancouver down the Oregon Coast to San Francisco. Very cool driving over the Golden Gate Bridge into the city. From there went to Lake Tahoe. About an hour outside of San Fran there is a Magic Mountain park and my daughter loves roller coasters. We pulled in and there wasn’t a car in the lot. Just like Wally World it was closed. Unlike Clark Griswald there was no security guard to pull a BB gun on. Still a great trip.

This year we are thinking either LA/Anaheim or Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I like taking vacation in mid/late August as it’s usually a bit quieter than July.

We moved to Florida so that we'd ALWAYS be on vacation.

Is that true that Florida is Massachusetts south? Seems like everyone i let done there was from Massachusetts When we visited we stayed in Kissimmee at a resort.. we got there on a Sunday was beautiful.. the rest of the week it down poured like crazy amid 100 plus degrees with high humidity..

I’m thinking with the turmoil going on politically and climate wise Maine might be the place to finally end up in. That coast line is incredible
It's funny historically Maine was originally part or Massachusetts.. Maine is definitely escape land for sure.

Old enough, yup. Disciplined? Is that even a word
Yes, not just a word. If you look me up at Burning Man I can hook you up for a session with a friend, if that’s your thing.

You from Vancouver ? Beautiful place … been there a couple of times when I was a youngster.
