Stupid NFL Rules

No, 10 guys screwed up yesterday. 1 was the HC of the Lions and the other 9 were the refs on the field who couldn't see what 30 million Americans saw.
There is no way whatsoever the ruling on the field would have been upheld if it went to review. Let there be no "may or may not" ambiguity about it. There is a 100% chance it would have been overturned and a 0% chance it would have been upheld.

Not in real time they didn't... And whether as a change of possession or score it was going to be reviewed by the replay official. Until an idiot did something really stupid that he admits he knew was wrong but he was just so pissed at some of their earlier failures to rule in his favor...he did it anyway. This is why it has to be penalized severely. Look at the undisciplined team this same jerk continues to run because short of what amounts to chump change his guys never face onerous consequences... And his team blew multiple chances to win that game after their HC spotted the Texans another 7. And despite all that talent there is a reason Detroit continues to disappoint it's fans...that has nothing to do with anyone or anything outside it's own locker room.

Some host raised this point on ESPN radio this morning: It's like there's an element of spite in the current rule. "It may not have been a TD, but we're not going to check because you screwed up."

I can see this becoming a huge freaking problem that is so easy to exploit.

Just one obvious that pops into my head is that after every clear pass interference blown call that benefits your team, teach your players to run it for a touchdown, then immediately throw the red flag....boom...can't be reviewed.

If the player doesn't get his feet down...throw the red flag.

If he doesn't maintain possession, throw the red flag.

But again, I didn't see it in the NFL rulebook. I still want the NFL to actually officially confirm this procedure. Methinks those refs pulled that rule out of their ass.

The problem yesterday was that the whistle wasn't blown.

3) What if, as a coach with a TO left I disagree and he still hasn't buzzed down while the XP snap is about to occur? We will see a play someday where the coaches on the sideline detected something that was unchallenged by the players on the field so the replay official didn't see it as controversial and let it go.

That was my question. Is there a signal from the ref that the play was been quickly reviewed and there was no buzz down? Does that then open up a window when a coach could then throw the flag now that it had quickly looked at? In the span of a hurry up offense it is just too quick.

As already explained the rule was made to prevent teams from exploiting free time, delaying the game while refs figure out and explain to the coach when/why he cant throw the flag. Its an effort to prevent teams from exploiting loops holes in their favor.

It all comes down to him being a hot head. He lost his cool like he did last year with the handshake incident. A head coach in the NFL should not only know when/when not to throw the flag, but be mature enough not to flip out like a baby every year in front of a national audience.

There are still other "procedural" advantages for lack of a better word. The home team controls the video screens which can influence which plays a team challenges.

I also see a similarity between this and the "tuck rule". At the time the way the rule was written, Brady did not fumble. While people did not agree with the language of the rule, the rule did exist. When the refs changed the call to a fumble people were mad at the refs.... even though it had specific verbage to support the refs.

What part of "none of the referees saw something that 30 million Americans could see plain as day" do you not understand?

Schwart screwed up, no doubt about it. But to act like he's the only one who screwed up is ridiculous.

The rule needs to be changed before next week's games start. Let them keep the 15 yard penalty for now, if they feel the need, but that play has still got to be reviewed.

The detroit game had me thinking.

The problem I have with this rule is this. What if Gary Kubiak threw the challenge flag? Does it still cancel the review for Detroit? If so, that is a huge unfair advantage.

Good point. Losing 15 yards on the kick off when you KNOW (hypothetically) a TD is bogus. I would love to see BB do this in a blowout and say unasked in the post-game press conference that when voting on rules MAYBE they should think all the consequences through.

BTW, did they get the coaches out of the room for that crap to be voted on?

That said, Schwartz should know the rules and should be fired for costing his team via his ignorance of what he is paid to know.

Whuh huh? It's an atrocious rule but I don't see how it can be deliberately exploited.
No, the same rule was applied in one of the games last week or two weeks ago. They aren't making it up. This is just the first time it has happened on the national stage.

What if the RB ran up to the Houston coach and said, "I got away with that one. I was down," and the Houston coach threw his flag.

They lose 15 yards on the kick, but get a TD because the review was "interrupted". They don't even lose the challenge, right?

Won't do any good. The review is only cancelled if the flag is illegally thrown by the team that would benefit from a reversal.

If Kubiak had thrown the flag HOU would have been penalized 15 yards but the TD would still have been reviewed.

No way can you change a rule part-way through the season. Blatantly unfair. Same set of rules (good or bad) need to be in place for the entire season once the season starts.

I'm amazed the tuck rule remains to this day considering the angst it garnered amongst fans and mediots alike when applied to us in the snow game. Everyone then acted like they had never heard of such a thing and a tremendous wrong needed to be righted. Only it had been applied multiple times to a variety of teams including against us during that very season. Seems this is a similar case. The rule has been in force since 2009, and just 4 days earlier Atlanta was similarly penalized when it's HC did the same thing on a turnover play. For purely selfish reasons alone I'm in favor of any rule that penalizes stupidity. On the scale of onerous rules the league needs to review and revise, this barely registers.

If they do change this rule, and Mara says it will be discussed in February after the season, I can't wait to witness the fury the first time the change bites us in the ass.
