Strategy for Next Season

The Tag is projected to go down by 10%. Although, I'm not sure if Thuney situation is different if he's tagged again. At worst, I'd like Onwenu slide into Thuney's spot and have someone else at RT.

I do not know either. I think pre-CV19 the 2nd year of the tag was 20% higher than year 1. If the tag goes down 10% and Thuney's tag is $13.25M, I guess that changes the decision process, but I think the dropoff from Thuney to Onwenu is small so the value at $13M+ is not there.

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers: "It looks like (he's) going to miss, in the span of three years, 21 games. He's just missed too much time. If he's on the street, I can definitely see (Belichick) and (offensive coordinator (Josh) McDaniels -- if he's back (with the Patriots -- being very serious about getting him

I wouldn't be so quick to slide Onwenu to the Left side...He should be great going forward at either RT or RG, but I question his lateral ability at LG...I mean look what happened to El'manure at LT on Thursday...Newhouse-esque...

how does he have lateral agility at tackle but not at guard?

I don't see the point of sticking with Cam Newton aiming a 6-10 season. If you wanna suck, go with Stidham, who knows, if he does not suck you have a serviceable young QB.

They need a QB but draft position won't help, I don't think they should trade up and sacrifice a lot of picks.

I'm not aware of the talent of 2nd and 3rd round QBs but maybe trying to hit gold there and failing may be the strategy for now. Russell Wilson was a 3rd round pick, JimmyG a late 2nd. I don't know...just please no Newtons or Fitzmagics.

It's been an interesting and sometimes exciting season. But with the playoffs slipping away, it seems fair to start talking about next year and the strategy for moving forward.

On one hand, there is the steady approach that involves a Cam, another free agent qb bandaid, or a trade for a quarterback with a restructured deal. On the other, we gut the roster after seeing a 7-9/8-8 campaign with aging role players.

My money is on gutting the roster, as another year with Cam will net a 6-10 or worse outcome unless there are some major changes. Do you see Belichick making enough moves to be successful again without a complete overhaul?
With a competent QB this team would probably be about 9-4 and ready to make a playoff push.
They will have more free agent cap space than any team in the league. Between the draft, free agency and young players developing finding just a competent QB will have them in the hunt.
I don’t know what you mean by cutting the team, I don’t think that’s even a thing with all the cap space available.
A one year remake is definitely doable to bring in free agents around the team in place.

JimIrsay said earlier this week that he considers Andrew Luck retired. That caused me to raise an eyebrow

Luck didn’t leave on bad terms with the Colts. Plus he has a freakish injury history

I would welcome jimmy back in a heartbeat! Contract would be filled with incentives.

if we could add receivers waddle or smith from Alabama in the draft, then jimmy would have a chance to succeed!
Sign Godwin and draft edge and DT and 5 tech DE. Our defensive front stinks

The only problem with your plan is that it does not take into account free agency losses.
BB should aggressively try to re-sign players like Andrews, Thuney, Eluemuner, White, Jackson, Butler,
and Guy. Otherwise, team strong points become weaknesses.
Thuney White and maybe Butler will leave. Jackson restricted, Andrews, Guy resign, Eleumenor not a priority . Onwenu goes to left guard, Herron RT. Michel or Taylor take White’s role. Would like Butler but think he might get paid somewhere.

how does he have lateral agility at tackle but not at guard?
At RT he uses his wingspan, hand size & base to latch onto his opponent and, in the case of run-blocking, drive him out of the play...We can still see his occasional struggles with outside speed, however...

AT LG he would have to usually be even more attentive to stunts & speed-rushing, and more pulling & next-level responsibilities during run-blocking...

Can he succeed there on a temporary basis? Yeah, like he did earlier this season; but that's not where he can help us the most, and certainly not against superior fronts...I don't see him handling Aaron Donald for instance at LG any better than Thuney did Thursday night, and even that one wasn't pretty...

I'd try Herron at LG first before considering switching Onwenu there from RT.

I don't mean this team can't compete and get into the playoffs with a slight upgrade over Cam. But making a playoff push is a terrible reason to continue the way we're going.

We are a franchise that understands winning championships is all that matters. Getting to the playoffs with a young quarterback is great not because it's "nice" being in the playoffs, but because it is a signal the team is ready to push towards a Super Bowl in the coming years.

Getting to the playoffs with a quarterback that is a step above beaten and broken is nothing to write home about. We can't go sign a guy in free agency who can come in here and beat a Mahomes or -- gasp -- Josh Allen in the postseason. Having an average to slightly above average quarterback can win games in the NFL and get you into the postseason. But then those quarterbacks lose. Just look at Minnesota and their "great" free agent signing.

People may hate hearing it, but you need the quarterback first and then you can build the team around them. Rarely, a team with an average quarterback wins it all -- but that is rare.

A one year remake might be enough to have us 11-5 and postseason bound. But then we'll lose to a team with a good to great quarterback. Yay?

Many teams win without great QBs. But regardless of that, you certainly have to put a great team around who ever you have at qb.
The point is that this team could be competitive with any decent QBs and has the cap room to improve dramatically.
Eli Manning (twice) Nick Foles, second year Russell Wilson, decrepit Peyton Manning habdd Ed won sbs recently. There are more examples of so-so QBs winning SBs with good teams that QBs carrying bad teams (there are pretty much no examples of that).
I’m not sure way you are suggesting they should do.

Herrons issue is strength. He would struggle inside.
There really isn’t much different between the left side and right side any more. Playing the te mostly on the offensive right, playing your pass rushing DE on the defensive right and bigger run stopping DE on the defensive left are a thing of the past. Left side and right side are interchangeable and defenses will just flip players to create those matchups.

If his issue is strength then we should be optimistic that in 2021 he should make gains in that area

If only it were that easy.

Pats can fill more holes than a team could normally fill with the cap room they have. They'll have an easier schedule next year. I don't see an answer at QB happening overnight though. I think we'll be back in the playoffs and division title contention - and maybe more - in 2022.
