So while there surely are *some* women who have kids with the intent of getting more benefits and have no desire to have the father in the picture, in reality, most single parents are not single parents by choice.

In fact, something like our massive, racist prison industrial complex contributes more to the rate of single parent households.

But there are a lot of factors involved here and blaming a single social factor is pretty myopic.

The cost to take care of a child is the same in any situation. If it's a net loss it's because there are no fathers providing for them. And why would the example I saw of 50 women having 87 children out of wedlock with 6 men even exist.

They're theoretically required to pay child support, but my stepson's father hasn't paid more than 1% of what he owes in that regard. He also gets disability payments when he's not actually disabled in any way.

Your point is that welfare encourages women to have children in order to get money from the government. The cost of raising a child far exceeds the value of the benefits a woman will receive for that child, so only very stupid women would take that approach.

In reality, very few women do that.

I have no idea what "50 women having 87 children with 6 men" even means. You're citing an unknown talk show, firstly.

Secondly, that show is looking at a snapshot of a small sample size of people.

Also, have you considered the possibility that the women thought these men wouldn't ditch them? Why is your first thought "Oh well they must have had nefarious intent to get money from the government."

We could provide birth control free to everyone, which would greatly reduce the number of single mothers/fathers. But a lot of people seem to have a problem with that, so I don't know.

As a side note: Unmarried doesn't mean single. I'm not married to my girlfriend, but we operate as if we are. Marriage is becoming less common in general these days, which isn't inherently a bad thing.

Whether a couple are good parents has nothing to do with their marital status.

The crime rate among black men *is* proportionately higher. That has more to do with poverty than it does marital status of the parents. I will be the first to admit that it certainly helps to have two stable parents, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Again, poverty is a more causal variable in this context than marital status of parents.

This is simply the nuance inherent in human social issues.

It's not about color. My son's wife has a sister in Indiana who has 8 kids without a father. Those kids are just as likely to go wrong as any other kid in that situation.

I absolutely agree. I think there's a lot we can do to tweak things that will maintain compassion but also bring more practicality.

That's way off the mark. Kids being raised without fathers are far more likely to have problems than kids from solid homes.

The reason the women like it is because the system was designed to reward them and keep them under the thumb of the government. And it's working like a charm for everyone but the kids.

Projecting your own values onto someone else's situations doesn't make them so.
