Stanton traded to the Yankme's

IIRC, the Sox said they reached out to the Marlins, but Stanton's agent said he never heard of their interest. In other words, the Marlins interfered on behalf of the Yanks.

Worked out to the Sox advantage. Martinez had a better year, and won't be making $30 million per year for the next 10 years.
Stanton had a list of teams he would accept a trade to, and Boston was not on that list. There are numerous reports of Stanton not wanting to come to Boston and rejecting trades to multiple other teams. It's a fun narrative that the ex-yankee gave his old team a sweetheart deal to get him, but that's not how it played out.

But you're right about that last bit. Definitely looks like they dodged a bullet, and very happy to have Martinez.

That's Exactly how it played out.

The Marlins agreed to a trade with the Cardinals. Stanton rejected it. They agreed to a trade with the Giants. Stanton rejected it. Stanton had a short list of teams he wanted to go to, and NYY was one of the few.
