It's pretty funny how this is the #1 sports story of the day, it's all anyone is talking about, and yet these same people are all tripping over themselves saying "who cares?"

There sure are a lot of people talking about this thing which supposedly no one cares about.

If he falls in this draft because of his stated sexual proclivity, then I would think the Pats would snap him up. Having an openly gay player is far down the list of Patriot team concerns. I think if they weathered the Hernandez storm, the 7 years of Spygrate hysteria, the constant metrosexual remarks and slanders by opposition players aimed at Brady since he's been the QB and the constant negative bombardment of the franchise by our own media, I think Sam would be a perfectly reasonable pick. Looks like you're probably right. Here is what BB had to say about Sam:

Our scouting staff has performed extensive work on Michael, both this season and going back throughout his career. That work will continue through the draft process this spring.

Which you know means the exact opposite. BB will end up drafting a nobody from the Northeast 10, and this board will flip upside down again.

Is that what you took away from what I wrote? Because for starters, Bruschi was way more productive in college than Sam was. He was a better player. Bruschi also became an ILB who was really well-suited to the 3-4 that the Pats ran.

Secondly, I honestly have no idea how Bruschi stacks up as a comp for Sam. Bruschi made one of the more bizarre position transitions that I've seen between college and the pros (from college sack machine to 3-4 ILB in the pros). My guess would be that he was so productive, and would ace the interviews so thoroughly, that Belichick would take a shot at him in the middle rounds. The question at that point becomes 'does another team value him enough to draft him before that?'

In Sam's case, I think the answer would be yes for a team that runs more of an attacking 3-4 that demands dedicated pass rushers at OLB. There are a lot of teams that run this sort of defense and routinely draft undersized college DEs to convert to OLB. I could definitely see a team like Baltimore picking him up, since transitioning DEs to OLB is something that they do all the time.

As it stands, it seems like the best comparable for the role that Sam would play in our defense is 2011 Mark Anderson, and Sam's even smaller than Anderson is.

Nah, FTW...I was just making a general comparison as both players were/are considered tweeners. I really have little familiarity with Sam's play outside of the bowl game in December.

Speaking from a purely football standpoint, having watched a ton of SEC football every year and studying him, I'm not that impressed. Some team will take a late round flier on him, and it might be the Pats, but he has quite a bit of work to do to refine his skills as a pass rusher.

His draft stock fell somewhat as a result of the Senior Bowl, he is a tweener and had a lot of difficulty with his drops into coverage, a situational pass rusher for a 3-4 d perhaps.

Just because one particular man likes another man in his _______ does not mean I need to hear about it, care about it, fight for it, champion it, rally banners over it, or anything else.

Taking a step back from American society and looking it over from an outside perspective reveals a lot of things, none of which fills me with pride.

I'd rather we don't draft him, regardless of how he can play, because I don't want to hear about his bedroom preferences every time he makes a play.
