So we going to get an early 3rd round pick then?

Pretty sure the only way we're getting ANY 3rd round pick from CLE is if they're granted an extra compensatory selection, which comes at the end of the round after all 32 teams have made their regular picks. Think somewhere in the #100 overall pick range.

I believe the agreed upon trade was for a 2018 4th rounder, with the condition that it could become a 2017 3rd rounder only if CLE is granted the extra comp pick. Obviously, we'll have no idea until those picks are announced by the NFL before the draft, but I wouldn't hold my breath, and no matter what it's not going to be a high 3rd.

I don't see the contract of losing their OL (Mack, maybe?) at 5/45 getting them a third round comp pick as those selections are normally given out for the biggest free agent deals/losses.

Mack making 9m dollars a year probably only nets them a 4th round comp pick for 2017--which means that we get their regular pick in the 4th in 2018.

Nope. If Mack plays over 80% of his snaps at Atlanta then Cleveland will get a third round compensatory. No offense, but most experts -- who have an almost 100% hit rate in the past years -- are saying the same thing about Mack.

the pick will be 97th at the earliest and as late as whatever the first pick of the 4th round is (assuming Cleveland continues to be the worst team/record in the NFL).

Last year there were 3 3rd round compensatory picks (NE, KC, Cincy) and the 4th round started at pick 100.

Draft - Over the Cap

As of now, the Pats are projected to receive the 103rd overall pick.

Mack played in 97% of the snaps Thursday night so he lowered his needed average from 80%.

So, in all likelihood, the pick will essentially be about the same number, but just a year later if the Browns aren't awarded a 3rd round comp pick, no?

What happens if Collins signs with Cleveland?

We still get their Compensatory 3rd rounder they traded to us when they lost one of their players.

Obviously I wasn't in on the conversation with the Browns (or if I was I can't admit to it), but what I don't understand is why more of these trades aren't actually conditional based on performance.

If Collins plays X amounts of snaps, we get X.
If Collins plays Y amount of snaps, we get Y.
If you sign Collins for 2017, we get Z.

wouldn't goodell get the first 4th rounder the Pats have? So, it would be their own 4th rounder, which most likely will be at the end of round 4.

Whatever the Pats' highest fourth round pick, the League takes away.

right, so it's possible the Pats end up with a late 4th rounder for Collins....if clev doesn't get a 3rd round comp pick.

Yeah, if we got Cleveland's #4, that would go away and we would basically be trading for Seattle's #4 as that's the one we're currently losing.

Regardless, it's the #3 comp pick if they get it. If not a similar pick but have to wait a year. Sucks to not get much but he's a UFA in a few months looking to break the bank. So . . .

It's possible. They also have Seattle's fourth rounder as well.

No, it's a 2018 (most likely high) #4. Of course, that's about the same value as a late #4 but it is what it is.

I thought there was a lot of murkiness in those waters regarding the possibility of CLE getting a third round comp pick for Mack. I've certainly seen plenty who don't believe it will happen, although as you mentioned, I certainly wouldn't doubt the experts.

The fact that the NFL now knows that the pick would be going to NE increases my skepticism.

I thought we were losing the fourth rounder in this upcoming ('17) draft. Why would we lose CLE's higher fourth round pick in 2018, which is when the compensation would occur if the Browns don't receive the extra 3rd for next spring?

I thought it was their comp 3rd in 2017 if they receive the pick OR their 4th round pick in 2018. Is this not correct? Thanks in advance.

Yeah I understand your skepticism. I am just saying that @nickkorte on Twitter has very, very been wrong about compensatory picks and that's what he is projecting right now. And given his track record I fully trust his math plus if there was no realistic chance at that pick why would BB & co. try to get this into the trade agreement ?
